I read an article a while back that said one side paying part of the other's legal fees was usually based on acute financial need.
Is this true? If so, how would they justify Charlie having to pay part of Nicole's legal bill? She just got a high-paying TV job, and is likely making more money than Charlie at the point she hires Nora. Also, Nora's extremely expensive, so it seems like having to pay 30% of her fees would seriously hinder Charlie's ability to retain his own counsel.
Also -- I'm sorry, just one more question -- what's your opinion of Bert? He strikes me as a nice guy but frankly, a lousy lawyer. He can't muster one decent counterargument when they're having the session in Nora's office, not even something like "Nora, what's the address on their tax returns for the last 10 years? They are NOT an LA family."

I’m watching this now. Just finding it. I am a paralegal working on matlaw. It’s not only plaintiff that can ask for their fees to be covered. Realistically, my understanding is whichever spouse is not the monied spouse can make an application for fees. That’s at least the case in New York. Also, while the court or no court discussion is potentially exaggerated for effect, based on my experience it does reflect the reality. Prior to commencement of the action it’s definitively focused on resolution. but once litigation has started there is this weird sort of dance that’s like we want to avoid bringing this to court but we also are going to court. I haven’t been on the client side, but I would imagine being litigious and also at the same time trying to avoid trial can be maddening and dizzying. There’s a lot that this film does get right. My one big criticism is that during the movie, they deal with custody and financial matters simultaneously. Maybe in CA that’s the case, I’m not sure, but in New York, custody is separate and dealt with first so that the child doesn’t get screwed by the financial litigation. For this reason the child or children also have either a Guardian Ad Litem (if they’re I think under 10) or an Attorney For The Child/Children, who protects the interests of the children during the custodial proceedings.

I don't think I have one! But maybe subconsciously when I really pronounce certain words the better diction does sound quite British I've been told haha
