The Guild’s Abilities And Their Real Counterparts | Bungou Stray Dogs

In this video I give a summary of every real novel the abilities of The Guild members are based on. All of which are classic American stories from dark fiction like Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Black Cat’ to more lighthearted tales like Lucy Maud Montgomery’s ‘Anne of Green Gables’.

I wanted to keep this video’s run time down, so here’s some fun facts I cut out:
Anne of Abyssal Red: The ‘abyssal red’ part actually comes from a translation error. The book’s offical Japanese title is ‘Akage no Anne’, which roughly translates to Red-Headed Anne. Hence the ability name includes ‘red’ and not ‘green’ like in the English title.
Black Cat In The Rue Morgue: I like to think the trapped in a book part of the ability comes from the fact that the characters in ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ spent most of their time isolated in an old mansion, solving the case through articles in newspapers.
The Great Fitzgerald: The title being a self insert version of ‘The Great Gatsby’ actually makes sense as the book is somewhat based on the real Fitzgerald’s own romance with Ginevra King. Fitzgerald’s wife in the series, Zelda, is also the name of the real Fitzgerald’s wife. She contributed to many of his stories (or maybe even solely wrote them, it’s heavily debated).
The Scarlet Letter & Gone With The Wind: It’s probably a coincidence, but I really like how they are particularly close in the series and both of their abilities are based on books with ‘Scarlet’ at the centre.
Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer: I had to cut out so much of each book because Mark has so little screen time haha I had nothing to work with.
