Except for the stock footage they used at the end for the launch, which looks like it was shot on a cheap camcorder in 1982. A few of my neighbors are current or former employees of Goddard Space Flight Center, about 20 minutes from my house in Maryland. I’ll have to ask if any of them were there when _Swades_ was being filmed.

@@elizabethfrancina4606 Yup, I did know that. Pretty cool of Ashutosh Gowarikar and team to go the extra mile to try to get that authenticity, and pretty cool of NASA to agree. (Although some better-quality stock footage would have been nice! 😆) And my neighbors whom I know work/worked there are Indian, or maybe all but one, so I’m hoping at least one of them was present! Many of my neighbors are/have been federal employees and/or contractors, as I live near both Goddard SFC and the National Security Agency headquarters, among other government agencies. Of course, the NSA folks aren’t going to tell me much of anything! 😆
It was a flop movie at that time but slowly people understood the value of this movie. Each scene of this movie has a hidden message.

Panchayat is like a village council, one of the ancient democratic governing structures that existed in India at grassroots level.
Earlier it used to be a council of mainly five educated, honourable, elderly/experienced persons and a chief from the village, selected by the villagers. They used to listen and solve problems and disputes.
In its attempt to decentralise power and strengthen democracy at village levels, the Government of India made this structure more organised, abiding by the constitution.
Not really, panchayat weren't elected by people nor did they gave any test to fit in the role they are nothing like that, Most the people in panchayat were just a village level dictator group who control villagers and do their atrocities except few good panchayat

movie is little slow but still this is my all time favourite SRK movie
Swades was the first Indian film to be shot inside the NASA headquarters and inside the NASA research center at the Launch Pad 39A of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rainfall monitoring satellite known as the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) in the film is an actual NASA mission and was launched in 2014.
I believe some NASA scenes were also filmed at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, which is ~20 minutes from where I live. I was living in New Jersey (where I grew up) at the time, but I have neighbors who are current or former Goddard employees, and I’ll have to ask if any of them were there when _Swades_ was being filmed.

Guys just so you know. ‘Nasha’ in Hindi means Addition. That’s why Mohan is alarmed when the old lady says how is your *Addiction* Going? 😁
Panchayat means Village Council which in the old system as shown in this movie used to be 5 elected elderly members of the village, one of those being Pradhan (Chief). They used to sit like this in a wide spaces and solve the issues brought before them.
In the 'Panchayat' web series, it shows the new Panchayat system where the Village has been divided into smaller areas known as 'Wards' with each ward having an elected representative and then Village Chief, Deputy Chief (Pradhan, Up-pradhan) are elected.
All of these elections are done by village people of 18 years and above.
But posts of Village Secretary and his Assistant are Government Jobs.

Since now you guys have watched Swades, you can understand the reference given in Panchayat Season 1.
As a born-and-bred American _desi,_ one of the things I most appreciate about _Swades_ is Mohan’s succinct defense of the U.S. It bugs me when “Indian-Indians” disparage us as supposedly lacking culture and values. (Not to mention the irony-deficient hypocrisy of people, some of them in my own family, who claim-often baselessly-that Americans are racist against Indians, while simultaneously ignoring or even supporting casteism and religious intolerance. Hell, California recently had to pass an anti-casteism bill because some tech companies run by Indians were pulling that crap.)
Oh I remember seeing that in the news about that bill. 🤦🏻
@@ChaatNChat Yeah, it sucks, and frankly, it alarms me that such a bill was needed. And much like what happens in the film, I’ve seen some people claim that the bill is anti-Hindu, racist against Indians, etc., which really frosts my cookies. It reminds me of some of these right-wing “religious liberty” Christians here in the U.S.-trying to shield oneself from criticism by hiding behind the sacred cow of religion (pun not intended, but embraced). There’s a long history here of people using Christianity to justify slavery, segregation, mistreatment of indigenous people, women, the LGBTQ+ community, etc. etc. ad infinitum et nauseum-and this is no different in spirit. And yes, as many overly defensive, whataboutist Hindus love to point out, some people from other religions do the same thing, but those people know who they are, and more importantly, their existence doesn’t justify anything. Besides, casteism is so embedded in Indian culture at large that it exists among non-Hindus, as well. (I’m sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Maybe it’s just my woke Brahmin guilt. 😉)

The Swades Movie really depicts India of those days (late 90's - early 2000's) . Those were the days, when the problems that are mentioned in this movie (electricity, water for farming, schools in remote villages etc) were quite a prevailing one. The movie not only captures and shows a typical rural Village of India in the early 21st century, but it beautifully portrays the emotions and thought process of people of that time. As you can see, two distinct Indian mindsets (Mohan and Gita) here, one who is living in the US and kinda cut off from his own roots, while the other one who is a staunch believer of her own cultural legacy. This was the scene back then, and believe me if I tell you that there are certain Green Card holder Indians (settled in US, UK and other countries) who became more American (one can say acts more a US citizen) than even an original US citizen. 😅😅 Back in the days, nobody wants to return to India once they get settled in US. And it wasn't like they forgot about their motherland, but it's more coz of the way of living one used to enjoy in the US , UK and other European countries. Glad things are getting better in the reign of the Modi Government.
How are things getting better in the current government when Stats show more Indians have left India citizenship in the last 5 years than ever. Atleast base your statements on facts and not your love for the government.
@@prakashswain There are various factor for that reason (leaving India for US citizenship). Moreover my points are primarily based on the improving qualities for people in rural/semi rural areas of India with basic necessities and amenities. India is a huge country including population, demography, geography and most importantly opinions. However one thing which everyone can agree with is the fact that, the current government has done quite a lot for people living in Villages esp the kind of resources they had in their disposal when they took reign.
Well certainly I'm not the spokesperson of any political party, however it's my utmost duty to highlight the achievements of someone and also to constructively criticize their wrongdoings too.
Things have gotten worse than they ever were in modi government. And not all villages were like the one in this movie or the way u mentioned. Only villages in UP BIHAR RAJASTHAN AND NORTH INDIA are so b a c k w a r d.
@@PriyaK-cu1fz That's why the development index of villages of UP is much higher than that of any villages in India. Let alone the FDI investment and other sort of investments. The rise in economy of UP is quite astounding and can be seen at a mass level.
Compare that to the status of major states like WB, TN, Kerela where every sort of business model is collapsed either due to "appeasement politics" or due to Communist Ideology, let alone the conditions of villages there. And adding insult to injury, the so called "Highest literacy rate" status has become the hub for terrorism with thousands of recruitment every year for terror organisations like ISIS and others. 🙂

Fun fact...the director of the movie Mr ashutosh gowarikar... played the character of mohan aka shahrukh khan in an Indian television series called yule love stories aired in 1993..the episode was called America return...and kaveri Amma was played by the same actress👍👍 the entire movie was basically inspired from that one episode with obvious additional storyline.

Out of curiosity, when _Swades_ was originally shown in Indian theatres, did people have trouble understanding the English dialogue in the NASA press conference scene at the beginning of the film? Did they perhaps dub that part into Hindi?

In India, it is regarded as bad manners to smoke in the presence of people elder to you. Mohan is just trying to show respect towards Kaveri Amma.

JoshB actually already had a movie in mind when he came over. Someone showed him the trailer of Madgoan Express and he really wanted to see it so that's what we watched. It was a fun change of pace because we have been watching a lot of dramas lately so a straight comedy was a fresh genre.

eventhough movie was a big flop in India, but it had a very major impact on Indian immigrants outside India, many NRIs came back to India after watching this movie

In watchalong both of you got confused a little bit confused about the Village name Charanpur. explaining here, The name of the village is Charanpur (Charan meaning feet) that was so named because of the presence of footprints of Ram and Sita in the village, that Chiku was showing to SRK 🤗🥰
