  • In my 30 years in industry, I switched jobs many times. Often I would accept a job, expecting to move up or grow quickly in the role. But, I didn't discuss this with the manager, leading to problems down the road.
Here's a story of the time I joined a new group as its first software engineer, expecting to run the group as it grew. Needless to say, it didn't work out that way. I'll talk about why, and how to avoid the same mistake yourself!

John, Thanks for all these videos. It's fascinating to learn some of the lessons you have learned over your career. I am currently attempting to make the jump from defense to FAANG and have been watching your interview videos. Hope I can crack the online assessments and interviews.

Thanks for watching! For moving into FAANG, there's a couple things you can do. First, see if any of your former colleagues are already there and can refer you. Second, if you have a security clearance as part of your work for defense, look for openings in cloud (e.g. Azure, AWS) that require or desire a security clearance, it's a big leg up to already have one. Good luck!

This is awesome advice. I'm starting a new job, I will take this advice and talk to my engineer manager or lead and set my expectations with them. Hopefully I did the right thing switching to this new company

This was maxing content, could you do a video on story telling? How to write stories, how to remember them.

Thank you! When you say story telling, you mean generic story telling, or user stories as part of design?
