- Journey with me as we climb one of the highest points in Connecticut on it's most popular hiking trail, Bear Mountain. At it's summit we're greeted by a huge stone pyramid that we climb to get a remarkable view of the valley and lakes below. During our hike up the mountain we encounter many scenic vistas, rugged terrain, streams and travel through ancient forest.

Thanks for sharing. Also for taking the time to set up so many interesting camera shots. I find trekking poles help me with my balance and also take some of the strain off my knees and lower back, something you'll appreciate as you get older:-)
Love Bear Mountain!
Dude nice views of this place!
Thank you for posting this HD video and others on YT for the rest of us to enjoy and learn from. I hope to get to this trail labor day weekend 2015 and will most likely go counter-clockwise as you face the map because I don't like going down steep descents either. I have my bear maze ready and will be stopping at Dicks beforehand to pickup a cheap trekking pole and a small buck knife, both items on sale this week. I will also be wearing my GoPro at times and interlacing the footage with my Canon HD Pro camcorder at 1080p resolution before posting the final production on my YT channel. Happy hiking!
Thanks for the video and documenting the trip up to Bear Mountain, Jonathan. I use hiking poles for added balance - basically more points on the ground. Age is 55 and I find I can go faster witht he poles too. I use Leki Sierra poles, which are pretty cool and have an added benefit that might like - you can mount a camera on the pole using the standard camera threads. The wooden knob on the top of the pole is removable.
Take care,
Tom Kruczek
Hiking poles allows you to use your arms to push up hills, which means it takes longer to tire out and also can increase your speed up inclines.
When descending the poles help with balance and take pressure off your legs/knees.
Great video! Thank you for sharing. My husband and I are going to enjoy this hike soon!
Enjoy!
Cool video dude..thanx a bunch for posting..
Glad you enjoyed!
Great Vid., thanks for posting and like Tom I use a walking stick to help with balance esp.going down a steep or rocky trail.
John
Okay, I guess they come in handy for some. Maybe I'll have to try it one of these days.
Bear Mountain is fun and I've done it many times (the CT one) but I consider it a very easy local practice hike. If you start doing some real peaks like Franconia Ridge in NH or Mansfield in VT or pretty much anywhere in northern New England that's over 4000 feet, you'll see why you need trekking poles. The trails are extremely rocky and many times you're maneuvering around big boulders. It destroys your legs and feet, especially on descents. You can do those without trekking poles but they are a big help in many ways on those big mountains.
Glad you found the video enjoyable. Thank you for your note about the poles, good to know!
Hi Tom. Thanks for the note about why you use the poles, very insightful! I've thought about using a pole or stick for the videos but since I'm often climbing I think it would get in the way to much for me to keep the trip enjoyable while still making the video. Appreciate the thought though.
Hello sdzoo. I'm sure you'll have no issues. It is quite a bit of uphill hiking but there is nothing technically challenging about it. Just bring a map, plenty of water, a snack & the will to get to the top :). Have a great time & glad you enjoyed the video.
AS A MODERATELY EXPERIENCED HIKER I FIND HIKING STICKS ARE MULTI USE.ASSISTING IN BALANCE IN STEEP AREAS AND FOR ANY POSSIBLE ENCOUNTERS WITH WILDLIFE...
Thanks for the comment whrticnys. I don't mean to alarm you but it seems your cap lock is malfunctioning :)
Dude you brought enough for a week
Walking sticks? It gives me the sence of ankle stability and i also use it for the ends of a tarp that I'll be using
Thanks for the note, of course since I made the video I've encountered several occasions where I thought boy a walking stick would've come in handy :)
how long of a hike is it?
Matt Bonacci five years
Bet you wish you had some trekking poles on your way down.
Jon what ever happened to you? Do you still hike? Are you with the same girlfriend from your other videos?
Can you tell me how many milles have ?
