Right? I was nervous, honestly, but I’m so impressed. She’s spot-on, and you can tell she has so much more to say. I would listen to her break this movie down for hours.
My one note: While she definitely got some references I didn’t get, I didn’t “have to know XYZ” to appreciate the movie. I look forward to criticism and analysis that educates and enriches my experience, but I was able to enjoy - love - MEGALOPOLIS without any of that.
I really hope people see it. I think seeing it for yourself and realizing that you’re not as ignorant and useless as the world tries to tell you to feel is a powerful experience that truly needs to happen in the theater.
In some regards, I think MEGALOPOLIS is better for people who aren’t busy reference-spotting. It could be argued they/we are actually having a purer experience.

sadly a lot of people will only see movies if their friends are also seeing it. Its where the idea of the guilty pleasure came from. Movies you watch without revealing to others you actually watched that. I've got a thing for cheap action movies with a sci-fi leaning and some of the oldest black and white monster / alien movies. Forbidden Planet is one I've seen several times and loved it every time. But I don't mind telling others I like weird or badly reviewed movies. Some still do and that's a shame.

It's great to watch you enjoying the experience of a movie and don't giving an F about what others say. Cloud Atlas and Sucker Punch were those types of movies for me 😂❤ I know they're widely hated on, and I understand it, but that won't shake the feeling I got from them. 🎉🎉

Comparing those movies to the work of Francis Ford Coppola is an insult, you don't know anything about cinema. Stay home better with your Netflix.

    • @ClayMann
      @ClayMann 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

I absolutely loved Cloud Atlas, I got very emotional about it and bullied people to watch it and was actually upset they didn't love it too haha. Now Sucker Punch, I'm a life long CG lover so I really loved how the greatest dance scenes were actually visual effects orgasms. I argued with a lot of people online that the movie was not a waste of time. However, recently I watched it again and I just found I fast forwarded to the action scenes and I was done and really only that first one with the giant samurai warriors was the only thing I still enjoyed. So perhaps it was a moment in time where it worked but, ah well. No idea about this megalopawhateveritis. Nothing about it makes me want to see it but I'm glad Grace loves it. Maybe its a bit like how I loved the CG set pieces in Sucker Punch, they spoke to me. There are themes and set pieces in this movie that turn Grace onto it. I care nothing about Rome or films about Royals

    • @ClayMann

@@mahmudmurad4655 how elitist of you, you probably fit right in with the cast of this movie. I've already commented I liked both those movies, I've been watching movies all my life and while sc-fi is my jam, I think I've had a lot of film experience even spending several years learning to animate and make my own short films. Never judge someone for the movies they love. Some of us have guilty pleasures that defy explanation and can be for so many reasons why they might love something widely considered as trash. There is no such thing as a movie being an insult to another movie. That's all in your head bro.

This movie wasn't created to be a mass-appealing one, but it's not a bad film at all. The problem is a lot of people label movies as "trash" if they don’t like or don't understand them. They think movies should only be about entertainment, which is just one purpose of films-definitely the most popular and profitable, but not the only one. Movies can be art, educational, social commentary, or just pure fun. But today’s audiences often expect them to just be fun escapes, nothing more. As someone who studied film, I know that movies have always been a mix of things since the start of cinema. I’m pretty sure many modern viewers would watch many classic films (from Soviet silent films to French New Wave to Kurosawa) and label them as "snoozefest" or "trash."

I will say I did not have the reference points you perfectly pointed to in this review. Honestly they made me appreciate this film even more. I did however have my spiritual background which made me love this movie. When I was walking out most people were laughing and shaking their heads. It made me sad to realize that society might not be progressing in the ways we hope. This movie could have done a lot of good. It was raised important conversations on consciousness, moving forward, and time! I can only hope that this movie becomes more respected as “time” ;) goes on. Thanks Grace for another great review and recommending this movie during your livestream!

There is a “tin-foil hat” conspiracy side of me that casually wonders whether this is motivating the gaslighting that MEGALOPOLIS is “an avant- garde arthouse mess”, when it is actually a very straightforward and very entertaining blockbuster. It just is also about something, and that something is you and me and us - the something nearly ~all~ movies were about before they were all about franchises and branding.
I don’t know. I don’t feed conspiratorial thoughts, but it baffles me how successful this “weird” narrative is. All you have to do to disprove it is see the movie, and it does kinda feel like some people really want to make sure most people simply never see it at all.

I've not been sure what to make of this movie, I watched about 10 seconds of the teaser when it came out and thought it looked awful, avoided it ever since, but the ads have been popping up on TH-cam all the time and the more I see the more intrigued I get, now really contemplating giving it a shot. I think instead of a conventional blockbuster it should be looked at as an arthouse film, I love a trippy arthouse film, Under the Skin, Mulholland Drive and Spring Breakers were epic and The Tree of Life is one of my top 5 films of all time. I probably won't LOVE this film but I might sill enjoy the spectacle. Glad you liked it, that bodes well.

It’s fascinating on how the different bad and good reactions for this movie totally echoes the reaction 2001 a space odyssey and also blade runner had from critics and most of all, audiences, when those movies came out and most of the critics were saying exactly the same things about, atmosphere, pacing, acting, lack of coherent plot, etc. So … I can bet this movie will totally be looked at in a different way twenty years from now.
I haven’t seen it, but visually it reminds me of my all time favorite comics artist here in Europe, Schuiten, look for his graphic novels álbuns , it’s like Coppola read all of them too and tried to go for the same style.

I'm glad someone else appreciated it. Sadly, in the theatre I was in, only a few people were watching. At the end, there was only me watching. Everyone else had left.

I am with you on this film.
    It is a cinematic experience.
The language of film has never been
    showcased this thoroughly.
    It looked beautiful,
and the messages were timely and timeless.
It is no wonder it is tanking.
    audiences are Philistines.

Yes! Go see in the cinema. IMAX. 💯% Coppola isn’t making anything for streaming or DVD. That’s for students to watch at home later. Go. See. In. Cinemas. Totally the best film of the year. If the decade so far. And it’ll only climb from here. It IS wildly compellingly. Thanks Grace 🙏

How can you possibly spoil a film that's so convoluted ad chaotic? It's like spoiling a David Lynch film. If you can't wrap your head around what's assaulting your senses, how can you "spoil" anything?
I respect FFC's ambition. I'm baffled by his vision and execution, but good on him for realizing his dream.
Still, it feels to me as if Christopher Nolan dropped acid and made an Ayn Rand movie.

I went to watch this with high expectations because i didn't know anything about it i was going in blind and surely i 90% regret watch it to the end was almost like a new form of torture to the human mind. Also i was very surprised it was a full room when i went to watch it at the end it was less than half empty. Some cry and some feel asleep after halfway of the movie. It was interesting to see the reaction of the crowd that i enjoyed most of it all.

You can't really say people are openly discussing topics these days. What they are doing is picking sides and throwing insults, insinuations, and talking points at each other to get reactions rather than exchanging opinions to achieve better understanding and compromise where everyone benefits from an open discussion.

Grace! I saw the film in Dallas for an early screening with q&a with Coppola and I felt similarly to you. It is DEFINITELY a work of high art, but the lack of preemptive awareness through marketing and corporate comms from Lionsgate really made the first experience at that screening confusing. That said I appreciated a wholly original film, and I enjoyed the experimental nature of it. It is bad, but I enjoyed the flaws it has for the pros it brings in originality and experimentation of film.

I LOVED this review full of independent thought. I was reminded of Roger Ebert's movie review essays that he wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times. So refreshing in a time of the binary, Rotten Tomatoes Yay or Nay system where everyone is afraid to appear like the odd duck out, compared to the hive mind of their peers on social media. FWIW, "2001: A Space Odyssey" also had a mixed reception, but it's my #1 sci-fi movie of all time. The Megalopolis experience as an art installation is an interesting approach.
Grace's enthusiasm & passion for the project have me intrigued. FFC is a master - and I would totally be down to tune in for a later commentary / breakdown of the entire movie through its scenes or shot-by-shot.
