Yeah like Grace said, in the first movie we're told that "There was once a dream that was Rome", and we get to see that through following Maximus, who embody that vision - A loving father, a loyal husband, a just leader. Which is yeah, romantic - but so was the dream the Emperor was talking about. It's idealism - it's classic storytelling of good prevailing over evil. I usually have the opposite feelings from Grace abot the movie ,but on this rare ocasion I agree with her.The story is trying to be complecating but it really make no sence..and of course ,it's too modern fot that time period.
Agree with Paul Mescal not having the screen presence. We all remember the powerful presence that Russel Crowe brought to the original. Apparently as he's getting older he is still feeling some of the injuries he got during filming of the fight scenes. All i see in this film is a DEI hire in the role...it just doesnt work due to him not having the charisma. I was a bit disappointed.
I had my reservation about seeing "Gladiator 2" in theaters. But this is good to know whenever I do get a chance to see this. Thanks for the review, Grace!
How dissapointing. Ridley Scott has obviously lost his touch. And not educating himself about the very different ideas back then about homosexuality and not listening to anybody.. Plus, Derek Jacobi was Claudius in 1976’s 13 part show, I, Claudius, the best thing made about Rome, I was looking forward to seeing him.
The smell is real. The streets were filled with exceament. Sadly, your understanding of Rome is confused. Also, there is only one contemporary painting of a roman emperor. It was the black one...
paintings are not accurate depictions, there was never a black emperor, but who cares, they use anglosaxon actors in this films and we all know ancient romans were not as pale and in some cases weird to look at as Hechinger and Joseph Quinn that look more like the barbarians romans were fighting and not as romans, romans looked more like Pedro Pascal in any case
the part about the painting is total nonsense. what are you even talking about? there are thousands of contemporary paintings of roman emperors, and who even cares? contemporary paintings tell us nothing

When historians point out things about "historical movies", the majority brush it off as insignificant. But making an (as accurate as it can be) historical movie is comparable to staying accurate with the source material on a current fantasy show. There was cohesion at the start with both circumstances. They sell us this dream of venturing into Ancient Rome but in reality it's rich out of touch people making ego boosts for "broad societies."
Rich out of touch people in actual Rome, and people that created this film. 110% correct. It makes me so sad that awesome smaller movies from unknown directors get brushed aside for more CGI filled messes... they’ll never learn... they should see it coming... but I guess Rome acted like they didn’t see it coming either. 🤷🏼♀️
@@Persephone_Personified And yet, a rich American filmmaker has nothing in common with a Roman elite. Total lack of class. These kinds of movies are stereotypical, as if Rome is just gladiators and muscles. For the purposes of "entertainment", we accept that and try to enjoy the spectacle. But when you learn that it hasn't any memorable depiction of the spectacle of Rome and it tries to be complex with a bunch of characters and history into one film, no wonder it fails. Unfortunately the protagonist might be a clear copy of Maximus, and the fact that he's his son is what initially gave it away.
@@Persephone_PersonifiedAlso, Rome saw it coming and accepted change. The empire split into western and eastern parts. When the west was falling with Rome, Constantinople in the east was rising. For the last years of the west they even changed cities and Ravenna was the capital city when Rome fell. In due course the western civilization of Rome feel but the eastern part of the empire continued for another thousand years. Very interesting history, worthy of a read. 👌
Yeah, I don’t always agree with Grace but I have also seen Ridley Scott’s recent films. Aside from The Last Duel, I was incredibly underwhelmed so I fear she might be right about this one.
Gladiator has been my #1 movie for a LONG time, and I've been sceptical about Gladiator II ever since its first announcement. The first one ends so perfectly, that I suspected that any sequel would at best add nothing, and at worst undermine the original. It's also arrived way too late, just like Sin City 2 (another disappointing/pointless sequel to a fantastic first film)...
I just saw "Red One" and liked it a lot. I'd rather ses Red One again than Gladiator II lol. Red One is not the greatest movie but it was better than I thought it'd be. Very entertaining and I laughed multiple times at what I was seeing on screen. It had a good hearted story too. Red One is a good family movie and if ur a fan of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, you'll dig it. Skip Gladiator II. I loved the original Gladiator and hated the idea they tried to make a sequel especially so many years later.
Just saw this with my dad in IMAX, and while driving back, he suddenly turned and said to me "This one's not very climactic compared to the first one, right?" and I laughed lol...
I could have looked past the script problems if it was as gorgeous and atmospheric as the first movie... but if that's weak too that's a real bummer :( Still gonna watch it though...

"The main reason you want to go see a movie on a big screen, is because you want to experience those big visuals and sound in the ARENA - and this just isn't much of a show" is so scathing💀
The trailers looked terrible
Ridley Scot is finished
Paul Mescal was never that guy
Most unnecessary sequel of all time
I found it amusing as Grace was switching between the names Mescal and Pascal within sentences 😂...
Honestly...
Denzel took me out of it in the trailer to begin with, he didn't even try with an accent & the poster looks cheap.
All the different posters at my local cinema where bad too. Very busy. Composition had no rhythm in any of them.
What accent... you think people spoke with Italian accents LOL? His character was from Northern Africa. The two Emperors in the movie are also suppose to be northern African. Stop getting your understanding of history from people who don't take classical studies.😊
Ah what a bummer! Disappointing to hear that it doesn’t even have the gravitas and “Hoo-ra” a film like this desperately needs. Even if the story fell apart, having that could have maybe helped save the film.
Sad but glad you’re honest with your reviews!
Thanks for the review Grace ❤️
It's nice to hear that Pedro cut a "dashing figure" here; It gives me hope for him as Reed Richards in FF4.
Usually when Grace doesn't like something, I do. So I'm still very excited! Great cast!
Why is it every time I love a movie so much, you hate it 🤣🤣🤣 god its such a downer because I get so excited to watch the review after 😢
Original Gladiator was...real big shoes to fill.
Is no one gonna mention Grace's pronunciation of Derek Jacobi's surname? 🤷♂
Paul Mescal is ALWAYS good, his filmography is exceptional, so I have to see it for myself, it premieres on the 14th here in Europe.
I'm going to judge it after seeing it, because I generally think the opposite of your reviews 😂😂
but good review tho
Bring on wicked! My theatre is basically sold out all through thanksgiving for premium screen grace! Gladiator is no where near as popular I think.
Wicked is definitely gonna devour
it’s gonna be so good
Are you going to do a SHOT by SHOT of the What…If? Season 3 trailer?
A person should watch a movie, then comment on it and form an opinion. That is the smart thing to do.
@@CarlotaEmperatriz Dio, claimed otherwise. Severan dynasty were northern africans. At a time wherein the population of Africa was largely dark skinned. Go watch some videos of Egypt prior to the 1950s. Thats when Sudan was created. Similar demographics were visible in Libya.
@@CarlotaEmperatriz Whats your source for there being no Black emperors? Dont you think that if Romans were white they would of shared their ability to write with Slavic and N.Europeans? Why then do we not find a written language from the region until Runic c. 150 CE?
@@samkostos4520 Northern Africans are not Black. Not even today, not back then.
Oh man, I’m still excited to see it this weekend
It's actually an OK time out. Go ahead and see it.
save your money for something better
Can't say I'm surprised. Ridley Scott hasn't been able to direct a movie since the 1990s.
Who cares.
Just saw it on saturday in a special screening, got exactly the same vibes.
sure you did.
I could have looked past the script problems if it was as gorgeous and atmospheric as the first movie... but if that's weak too that's a real bummer :( Still gonna watch it though...
Grace, I stopped watching this mid way as you definitely had several spoilers, I love when you review movies but you really need to rethink what a spoiler is
I’m looking forward to eventually watching it, but I’m not expecting much considering the trailer that had a guy riding a rhinoceros into the colosseum. I actually have worked with rhinoceroses. No kidding. No one is riding one. 🙄 Black Panther could get away with that, because it’s “just” a comic book movie. This movie is supposed to be semi-historical
Right? I love a good historical fiction….but it seemed they were reallllly drawn to the fiction part 😂
COULDN'T IT HAPPEN? A rhino was raised since infancy, can't learn to have the daddy ride on him?
@ That would be the absolute only way. It’s how I rode a giraffe back in the day. I had bottle raised it. In fact, that’s my icon photo, or whatever they’re called
