I think I’m addicted to watching these videos I’ve spent the last 3 days watching nearly all of your videos 😂 another brilliant video Gareth thank you mate ❤
I remember when I was a kid back in the 50’s and 60’s when we used to have our tea meal in the garden in the summer. There were always plenty of salmon paste and cucumber sandwiches on offer and I loved them ❤️❤️. I can’t be sure of the exact brand 🤔🤔 I think it was something like Shipams or Shipmans. I also loved liver sausage sarnes. I haven’t had paste sandwiches for years. This video has convinced me to buy a jar tonight. Keep them coming Mr G 👍🏻👍🏻.
When having our break times at work the topic of conversation always revolved around the question ‘what have you got on your sandwiches’? Regardless of what particular brand or flavour of potted meat the stock answer was ‘I’ve got potted dog on mine’. Everyone who had potted meat said it was potted dog.
How can they both call themselves Beef Paste when there’s pretty much the same amount of chicken as beef? I’d definitely go for the Morrisons one out of the two.. Good work Gaz.
Princess make both in the same factory. The problem is that princes is only a name that buys in its products. And has its name put on the product like corned beef. Most comes from Brazil and a paper wrapping put on it . Next ti.e you In morrisons or any supermarket pick up all the cans of corned beef look at bottom of tin see it's all the same manufacture see which is the cheapest but all from the same place??? Brazil and note the package no as well as other markings hope you find this a money save for you.
I got a really bad dose of food poisoning from a jar of one of these meat pastes when I was a teenager. Not the fault of the manufacturer as it had been open in the fridge for more than 3 days. Probably around 5-6 days. My mum's fault, bless her. It was one of the worse cases of gastro enteritis the hospital had seen and initially thought it was a rupturing appendix. I actually almost died and was flat on my back in agony for nearly 3 weeks on a drip, so be very careful with these products.....
I've had the pastes in the fridge far longer than that and completely fine loads off times.. that doesn't sound right too me mate are you sure it wasn't from a cock up at the factory lol...weeks I've used them after and fine same with cooked meats n ham I never eat by sell by date must have a iron stomach lol
In my batchelor days I would often buy a tin of Princes Stewed Steak, a giant Yorkie Pud and get some garden peas. I'd heat up the stewed steak and pud and add the peas for a cheap quick meal. Gave up on this when the tin of "Stewed Steak" went well being well over 50% fat and gristle, shame, cutting corners doesn't save you money, it loses you customers, shameful. Just like the Fray Bentos pies, consigned to memory ...and NO! Ain't paying £3 for the vain promise that the FB pie has returned, not that gullible.
There was an episode of Poirot where he tastes 2 jars of Paste, one was sardines and the other crab. He pulls a face and said it was bad enough the 1st time. I too, grew up on these pastes and i still like the fish pastes although, not the meat ones.

Hi Gareth, you highlighted a big issue for me, finding that piece of bone. Any food, be it meat paste, a pie of a piece of fish, if I find any bone I simply cannot continue eating. It doesn’t matter if it tastes fantastic, it does not matter if it is in the first bite or half way through, I simply cannot eat anymore. This is why all of the meat I use in my company’s food production is minutely inspected for bone, gristle, skin and other bits I would not want to find personally. It takes considerable effort and expense but to my mind is worth every penny. Keep up the good work, I look forward to every review!
You really pushed the boat out on this review 😁. Maybe you can spread these on the Roy's rolls that you got from the co-op.😂. To be honest I don't mind salmon paste and cucumber cracked black pepper with cream cheese on granary wholemeal bread 👍
Years ago I worked at a frozen fish packing company. Half way through a run we would stop and change the packing labels. We did all the main brands including the cheaper versions and all with the same fish. Morrisons used to do an ace crab pate not their own some other companies, I do wish they would bring that back.
Thanks for another top review Gareth. I'm a fellow Cumbrian (Kendal) and a similar age. I remember having all the meat paste spreads that you mentioned as a kid. I'm not tempted now.
Even now i still like a buttered paste sandwich for my supper. The shops where i live in town in Edinburgh either have it or not so when i get big shop delivered i get some then i get the cheaper one as there's not much difference like you said you pay for the name thanks for sharing ❤
It’s a trip down memory lane Gareth, especially when you mentioned the Sullivans. The cost of living crisis is hitting hard. The cheaper brands are more favorable these days. I remember beef paste from my days of youth. But it was anchovy paste that was my favourite right up till a few years ago. Then the recipe was changed and it's was bloody awful. Now I just stick to pate and my favourite Liverwurst. Nice comparison review. Cheers Gareth 👍🤤😀
Another great review Gaz , yep had these in 60s mainly sunday tea time as mum didnt cook after a roast , only ever used have chicken one and yep still do today got 2 x pots in fridge , gone try beef now , agree its breakfast dinner tea .
That's so funny Gareth, here in Ayr we used to say dinner and tea but my 8 year old Granddaughter is always correcting me and saying ''It's lunch Papa not dinner'' Like you I was brought up with meat paste sandwiches, sometimes salmon or chicken paste,we said it was the poor man's pate 😂as it was nice on a bit of toast ,It was always the cheap brand we bought as Princes was a wee bit dearer,,I haven't had a meat paste sandwich since I retired 7 years ago, another enjoyable video big pal,I watched your short the other day with the Lorne sausage, you needed to change the white pudding for black and a tattie scone , we're not that big on white pudding here on the West Coast of Scotland it's never included in a Big Breakfast more black pudding instead
I remember the Sullivans..I think that I was around 19 then when watching it...I noticed that u did not have butter on your bread with the paste. Mum always put butter on with the paste..We did not have this on a Sunday as a sunday tea as others stated here. After our Sunday roast for tea we would have either egg on thick sliced buttered toast..Sardines on toast or pilchards on toast. Mum would have a jar in the cupboard of beef or chicken paste, but that was there just for a snack on a thick slice of bread or toast both with butter..Dad would have paste on jacob cream crackers with butter on. I like sliced tomatoes with the paste in a sandwich also.
Goodness that takes me back,my dads packed lunch , I do buy the odd jar of salmon paste and have it on toast but I don’t like any of the other ones and I always get princes, thanks for that bringing back old memories❤
Still have these now, mainly Aldi/Asda own brands. A couple of part baked rolls done in the air fryer (3 minutes) and a nice heaping in each with some of the Heinz Gravy Mayo, which I picked up at B&M for 50p (surprisingly goes really well with the beef paste)
My mother in law in 1983 introduced me to The Sullivans & Sons & Daughters , the day was'nt the same staying down in Kent on hols if we did'nt sit down with a cup of tea and sandwich & cake to watch these two programmes from Australia .
Used to love a bit of Salmon, sardine or crab paste spread on warm toast. Gone off the chicken a bit now due to finding gritty bits in it. Thanks for another good upload.
I was surprised to see pastes were still around,I remember eating fish paste, and crab paste,I don’t remember eating meat ones in the late1940s,and1950s when I was growing up.I remember liking them.
I always used to have sardine & tomato and chicken paste in school. I still sometimes buy sardine & tomato paste when we do the shopping. People sat near me at school used to hate the smell.
Loved that review. Brought back childhood memories for me too! Y favourites were beef and tomato and also sardine paste. Going to try them again. I do agree about homebrand etc too
My favourite is Shippams Crab paste which used to contain 70% crab. But nobody seems to stock it any more. Everybody sells Princes. Just checked and simple reason is Princes own Shippams. Seems they still produce some products with Shippams brand.
Hey Gaz love the comparison vids most of all your vids! Would love tho see a chicken goujon/nugget comparison or or some more M&S products maybe best chicken and stuffing contest! Great work mate 👍
the 'paste' of choice around these 'ere parts is granovita vegetable pate. why? depending on what you put with it, it tastes like all the meat pastes of the past/and present. I cannot ingest anything containing meat - without being seriously ill, so when someone mentioned granovita to me, I thought 'ok, one can but try it once' and so I did. and now, I can't leave it alone. it's the summer food of choice. (it's cheaper in asda than holland & barratt) and it's an essential item here. if I'm going out for the day, I'll make up 2 entire packs of sandwich thins - half with veg pate and marmite, and half with tomato sauce. you don't need a lot as it does go a long way! don't knock it till you've tried it. 😋👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy £1.30 in asda in either their free from section or where they have all the gluten free bread (don't ask the staff, they never know where half their stuff is!). keep in fridge once opened - keeps for about four or five days depending on level of addiction 🤣 the mushroom pate is also nice, but doesn't pair well with every sandwich condiment.
Going to say I haven't had paste spread since I was a kid. I remember not being a great fan but do remember them tasting a bit gritty which is interesting the most expensive ones still do. Now I tend to stick to ham and cheese. But t6he price comparison is really interesting.
As you can probably tell Gareth I'm going through a load of your back catalogues haha, laid up and just going through my favourite TH-camrs! Anyway nothing wrong with a bit of paste add some tomatoes, cucumber and onion and it's a pretty decent sarnie. I have a memory of a Xmas party at primary school where there was salmon paste on a finger roll, loved it ever since (I'm 55 now)
Great review Gaz unlucky with that bit off bone that would have stopped me straight away but we always but the the cheap ones because we don’t eat the packaging plus the number gives it away made in the same factory just a different recipe princess has added calcium from the bone 🤣 keep up with the great reviews as always 👏👏👍👍
Last time I had paste sarnies was 45 years ago when me mum made 'em for me school lunch. She smeared it as thin as the crack in me arse. Not eating it again any time soon. Great video.
We also had the spread in sandwiches in the fifties/sixties and the Shipham factory wasn’t far from my school in Chichester, the smell around that area was enough to put anyone off eating it
The only sandwich pastes I get now are M&S. As far as I know they do a salmon, beef and a chicken variety although that may differ round the country. The only one I have in my cupboard at present is salmon which on checking is 90% salmon which as far as I am concerned is well worth the difference in price although I can't quite recall how much they were.
Their Beef one was delicious a few years back, but they changed supplier. The new one is horrible. Try the Shippams beef one instead. That's really nice.
I still eat paste regularly, so princes and shiphams are my go to but have had Aldi equivalent's which are not to shabby but not as good, I tend to have sardine and tomato, crab, beef and chicken. Unfortunately they don't do my favourite Bloater paste and haven't for many many years.
The Sullivans, wow that tricked a flash back to my childhood. Remember my mum watching it and me and my two brothers would be playing (more likely fighting) with it in the background. And meat paste sandwiches were defiantly on the menu at that time.
Own brand have come on a long way now and a lot of them are the same thing from the same factories with different names on them. Nice review and stay well.
Pretty sure with the codes on the back of both being identical (GB CI016) that means they're processed meat from the exact same location... guessing Princes make them for Morrisons and just slightly alter the recipe to keep costs low. I'm sure a lot of the own brand stuff is made by the big brands with just less expensive ingredients
Hi,yeah we still say dinner & tea 🙂I have to say I know potted meat well & tin pek etc right into my twenties.I do still have pek & corned beef in storage haha.
Ha ha i had Princes sardine and tomato with cucumber for lunch today . Good comparison Gaz. Good work. Like you said think what you can save buying own brands. Mega.👍😊
Sutherlands spread was our one my little brother grew up on the beef one I dont mind the chicken one either. Has to be butter on the bread I like it now & on fresh bread from a real bakers. Is your tripod broken I got a bit seasick. No youre not the BBC but we love you for it. Keep up the good work
hi gareth hope you are well. i bought the princes beef paste when on prom at morrisons.i was not impressed with the paste.i think if you want beef paste much better from the local butcher.the old adage is true you get what you pay for.the dearest ids always the cheapest in the long run.have a great week i have been busy on catch up on your reviews thanks gareth😅😅
Nice review, have been eating fish paste sandwich's since i was kid .my fav used to be salmon and shrimp, which they dont seem to do now ,the salmon paste is really nice .I just buy the cheapest ones ,which i find are still very good .
If anyone lives in the region of Derby there is a bakery called Birds. Their beef paste is ' to die for' . They have outlets around Leicestershire and Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Their paste is peppery and very , very good as are their crusty cobs- but not on a Monday.
Thanks, I'll avoid the Morrisons one for sure. Tried the Princes and liked that. My favourite is Shippams. Not easy to get now though. Always out of stock in Tesco's :(
I absolutely love this video definitely brought back memories, Quick question, am I allowed to send you surströmming the worlds smelliest fish to review. I have placed one order it is coming from Switzerland. Apparently Swedish eat it. And it’s very famous on TikTok and TH-cam. Please let me know. Would love to see you do this with your brother again. Damn you’ve made me hungry! Off to make a Nduja sandwich (ingredients 84% pork no other meats) (I’d never heard of it before your vid now I’m addicted!)
I'm not sure if you ever try M&S things as I'm new, but i'd recommend adding one of theirs in the mix next time, as I've noticed a difference, sometimes good sometimes bad. Of course they try to be posh by calling it potted meat instead of meat paste. 😂 Nice video!
When I used to live in Nottingham, I often used to take beef paste on my bread for me 'snap'. Up there though it were a local delicacy called Potted Meat. Can't get it Sussex for love nor money.
I suspect that many of the Branded products possibly give a slight discount to the supermarkets if their products are at eye level & or middle shelfs in the isles

Thank you, you're welcome 😊
My dad's favourite was the sardines and tomato paste ... Shipphams also used to do Bloater which was his second choice.
Cheers Derry
Gareth you took me down memory lane, like yourself I grew up with those, haven't had them in years.
Great video as always. ❤😊
Glad you enjoyed
Goodness that takes me back,my dads packed lunch , I do buy the odd jar of salmon paste and have it on toast but I don’t like any of the other ones and I always get princes, thanks for that bringing back old memories❤
Many, many years ago they used to make a liver and bacon paste. I loved it when I was a kid. Not seen it for years though.
I remember that too John l loved it haven't seen it in years ❤
If it's pork liver and bacon, then it's Braunschweiger. I get that all the time. Damn fine with mustard.
@@SimonAgree-sb1ol hi Simon I think that is an actual sausage, this was a paste in the same range as the others
The salmon paste from Aldi isn’t so bad, it’s rather nice with some cucumber🥰 hope your well mate👍
Oh Gaz….. memories thanks for the upload…. My Fav one is salmon paste. Great vlog Gaz 👍👍
You're welcome
You can't beat Binghams beef spread, made in Sheffield, as all great things are, like Hendersons Relish and Licorice Allsorts 😂
My mother in law in 1983 introduced me to The Sullivans & Sons & Daughters , the day was'nt the same staying down in Kent on hols if we did'nt sit down with a cup of tea and sandwich & cake to watch these two programmes from Australia .
Yes will of been about that time Carol.
Thanks for a long gone memory. These were a family staple. I remember that discolouration on the top of the paste when opening. Could not eat it now.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm still partial to a paste sandwich, as you said it's a taste from my childhood. Thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜
You are so welcome!
The way things are going people will be eating dripping and any offal they can get hold of/afford like the War years.
@@sparsh415 offal is very good for you
I always used to have sardine & tomato and chicken paste in school. I still sometimes buy sardine & tomato paste when we do the shopping. People sat near me at school used to hate the smell.
Loved that review. Brought back childhood memories for me too! Y favourites were beef and tomato and also sardine paste. Going to try them again. I do agree about homebrand etc too
You're welcome
My favourite is Shippams Crab paste which used to contain 70% crab. But nobody seems to stock it any more. Everybody sells Princes. Just checked and simple reason is Princes own Shippams. Seems they still produce some products with Shippams brand.
Thanks for the info. Asda used to do shippams. I always got the beef one.
Hey Gaz love the comparison vids most of all your vids! Would love tho see a chicken goujon/nugget comparison or or some more M&S products maybe best chicken and stuffing contest! Great work mate 👍
Salmon, sardine and tomato and crab paste are lovely imo.
Salmon paste is spot on
I sometimes have the Sainsbury's equivalent in a sandwich with radish and spring onion on the side
the 'paste' of choice around these 'ere parts is granovita vegetable pate. why? depending on what you put with it, it tastes like all the meat pastes of the past/and present.
Cheers pal not had that one. 👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy £1.30 in asda in either their free from section or where they have all the gluten free bread (don't ask the staff, they never know where half their stuff is!). keep in fridge once opened - keeps for about four or five days depending on level of addiction 🤣
the mushroom pate is also nice, but doesn't pair well with every sandwich condiment.
The Sullivan's, Australia's finest before the dross of Neighbours and Home and Away.
It was Shiphams in our house, the salmon was Princes. Great vid again.
You're welcome Mike
Spread on hot best buttered toast...yes i very much remember those days..dont think its for me anymore gaz .ange x
I love your TH-cam video, and your channel and your TH-cam video are awesome, and I watch your video every day 🍻👍
Going to say I haven't had paste spread since I was a kid. I remember not being a great fan but do remember them tasting a bit gritty which is interesting the most expensive ones still do. Now I tend to stick to ham and cheese. But t6he price comparison is really interesting.
Sutherland's used to be the best by far. Shippam's is good but I can't seem to find the meat spread either
Cheers Lesley
Good comparison vid. Beef paste, sliced tomato and some Colemans in soft white bread. Bangin.
As you can probably tell Gareth I'm going through a load of your back catalogues haha, laid up and just going through my favourite TH-camrs! Anyway nothing wrong with a bit of paste add some tomatoes, cucumber and onion and it's a pretty decent sarnie. I have a memory of a Xmas party at primary school where there was salmon paste on a finger roll, loved it ever since (I'm 55 now)
Glad you like them!
Great job, I used to dread the salmon paste. Shiphams were my favourite brand) Btw very helpful video for folks on a budget :)
So good!
Used to love it when i was a kid, didnt even lnow u could still get them, loved toast toppers too not seen them either
I haven't had paste since I was knee high to the proverbial grasshopper. The only one I remember having is the salmon flavour.
Haha cheers pal
Lol yes had paste sandwiches for dinners as a kid 😂 still have the shrimp paste now and again 👍 take care Gareth until next time 😁
Cheers Pauline
Omg this takes me back , i used to eat loads of this stuff . Shippams was the bramd name back then . Could taste it as you were eating it .
Gave your age away there, with the Sullivan's mention I went home for dinner and always watched it,gday kitty👍
Haha yes
Great review Gaz unlucky with that bit off bone that would have stopped me straight away but we always but the the cheap ones because we don’t eat the packaging plus the number gives it away made in the same factory just a different recipe princess has added calcium from the bone 🤣 keep up with the great reviews as always 👏👏👍👍
Last time I had paste sarnies was 45 years ago when me mum made 'em for me school lunch. She smeared it as thin as the crack in me arse. Not eating it again any time soon. Great video.
You're welcome
We also had the spread in sandwiches in the fifties/sixties and the Shipham factory wasn’t far from my school in Chichester, the smell around that area was enough to put anyone off eating it
The only sandwich pastes I get now are M&S. As far as I know they do a salmon, beef and a chicken variety although that may differ round the country. The only one I have in my cupboard at present is salmon which on checking is 90% salmon which as far as I am concerned is well worth the difference in price although I can't quite recall how much they were.
I love the M&S Potted Beef with 90% beef. It's 75 g and costs £1.20. Delicious.
Their Beef one was delicious a few years back, but they changed supplier. The new one is horrible. Try the Shippams beef one instead. That's really nice.
Do you even do your own stunts too 😂🤣😂
Love watching your reviews buddy
🤣
I still eat paste regularly, so princes and shiphams are my go to but have had Aldi equivalent's which are not to shabby but not as good, I tend to have sardine and tomato, crab, beef and chicken. Unfortunately they don't do my favourite Bloater paste and haven't for many many years.
The Sullivans, wow that tricked a flash back to my childhood. Remember my mum watching it and me and my two brothers would be playing (more likely fighting) with it in the background. And meat paste sandwiches were defiantly on the menu at that time.
Your right it always takes me back to the school days fond memories mate
Nice one pal
Own brand have come on a long way now and a lot of them are the same thing from the same factories with different names on them. Nice review and stay well.
Great point!
Good work.
Like you said think what you
can save buying own brands. Mega.👍😊
Thanks 👍
Sutherlands spread was our one my little brother grew up on the beef one I dont mind the chicken one either. Has to be butter on the bread I like it now & on fresh bread from a real bakers. Is your tripod broken I got a bit seasick. No youre not the BBC but we love you for it. Keep up the good work
You're welcome
Definitely Morrisons Gareth 👍🏻👍🏻. I still have it on my toast in the morning. Pebble mill omg
Nice John, yes forgot to mention on toast too yum 😋
I'm a saddo, I love the Asda chicken paste, it's only about 30p a bottle as well, it's sooo much nicer than other pastes I've tried :)
Used to love chicken and stuffing paste don’t know if you can get it now
hi gareth hope you are well. i bought the princes beef paste when on prom at morrisons.i was not impressed with the paste.i think if you want beef paste much better from the local butcher.the old adage is true you get what you pay for.the dearest ids always the cheapest in the long run.have a great week i have been busy on catch up on your reviews thanks gareth😅😅
The biggest hike in prices has been for Peanut Butter, that would be another comparison test, as you munch your packet of iced jems.
Yes I've not done that one I don't think.
Nice review, have been eating fish paste sandwich's since i was kid .my fav used to be salmon and shrimp, which they dont seem to do now ,the salmon paste is really nice .I just buy the cheapest ones ,which i find are still very good .
Cheers Lee
IAM going back to 1965 as a child there used to be a old corner shop potted meat on a slab they used to cut off a quarter no fridges then
I noticed on the side of the paste, it says five portions. In that small jar. I spread it all on two pieces of whole meal toast.
Ya mean to say these seething capitalists "over egg it", Cruella ? Well i never.
Always out of stock in Tesco's :(
I absolutely love this video definitely brought back memories,
Quick question, am I allowed to send you surströmming the worlds smelliest fish to review. I have placed one order it is coming from Switzerland. Apparently Swedish eat it. And it’s very famous on TikTok and TH-cam.
Please let me know. Would love to see you do this with your brother again.
David
Cheers David
I used to make my dads sandwiches for work and if I remember correctly (its been 60 years) mum used to buy Shippams meat paste in tiny jars.
Yes look in my luxury playlist
When I used to live in Nottingham, I often used to take beef paste on my bread for me 'snap'. Up there though it were a local delicacy called Potted Meat. Can't get it Sussex for love nor money.
I suspect that many of the Branded products possibly give a slight discount to the supermarkets if their products are at eye level & or middle shelfs in the isles
CI016 is Princes...same factory, very slight difference in recipe.
Thanks for the info!
