Salem's Lot still has the scariest vampires to this day. That vampire boy floating outside the window absolutely terrified me back in the day as a kid. Its still visually unsettling. Thank you David Soul for sharing your memories of this horror classic.
This version of Salem’s Lot will never be topped. Excellent cast, direction/filmography, and this version of Barlow will go down as not only my favorite vampire, but I think the most beautifully hideous looking vampire of all time.
My god wasn't it lol. This film is a testament to what a good script with a fine director and very talented actors can achieve. No ridiculous effects, no unnecessary gore. Just fine acting with great direction and dialougue. This film was released on prime time TV when I was around 8 years old. It has a PG rating for the love of God lol. I mean how many truely good horror movies have anything north of an R rating 😅. This is the only one I can think of and it's a masterpiece IMO. Still love this movie today.
This film gave me night terrors as a kid. Took me as a grown adult to figure out why when I rewatched with my kids one Halloween. When it aired my family has just moved into a two story house with woods in the backyard. Was afraid I would hear knocking on my bedroom window at night. Great video Mr Soul.
David Soul Nailed the character of Ben Mears despite not looking as described in the novel. BRILLIANT performance, and by everyone in it. James Mason was a LEGEND.
As a 1970s kid and fan of David Soul. Not only for the Starsky and Hutch but all the movies and shows he starred in. I really miss David Soul somehow; the light in this world seems diminished without knowing his presence is still in the world. Highly underrated actor sad to say. He was perfect for Salem's lot which is masterpiece to this day in my opinion.

i bought this on bluray a few years ago and i watched it with a friend who is over a decade younger than me and had never seen it. he loved it but the only thing he got a kick out of and i did to was the wires of i forget his name cause i haven't watched it since when he came through the window you could see the wires since the picture was cleaned up. i also have the Original Broadcast on VHS my brother got it from an aunt of ours that has since passed like back in the late 80's or early 90's. i think? he gave that to me and i still have it
I usually think of his song "Don't Give Up on Us." I rarely like a mushie love ballad but his song is an exception. You could call it a guilty pleasure of mine.
I was a kid when the Glick boy scratched on Mark Petrie’s window. Trust me, no one kid had a good night sleep those 2 weeks Salem’s Lot aired. What a time to be a boy in America!
David i'm 67 years old as of Nov. 2023 and let me tell you that i was still a young man when i saw Salem's Lot and i could not sleep alone after watching it. I was really scared shitless. It was in my head for a long long time. Wow.

Watching Salem's Lot as a 13/14 year old was just amazing - it is still in my top 5 and no amount of special effects will change that. Thanks so much for doing this :)

I absolutely adore you David. I first saw Salem's Lot when I was 14 years old. I was on vacation in Ocean City New Jersey and Salem's Lot aired one summer night. No one else was watching. Just me in the living room with all the lights off and all the windows open, curtains blowing wildly from the strong summer evening ocean winds. It was breathtakingly perfect. And at almost 50 years old it is to this day my most watched DVD ( at least once a week-it is literally like a security blanket, my sense of normalcy, everything is alright in the world when Salem's Lot is on). I have 2 copies in the event one wears out. This film holds a special place in my heart and always has. I had it playing the other day and will be playing it again today, especially in tribute to Lance Kerwin.
Dam that was hard to watch in the respect of not having the wonderful and brilliant David soul with us anymore so sad ! but it was good to hear what he had to say about the film R.I.P David
I grew up watching Starsky & Hutch, Salem’s Lot the original was and IS by far the scariest & creepiest vampire movie ever!! David Soul, you aged gracefully.
God Rest you David. I loved Starsky and Hutch. But Salem's Lot to this day creeps the hell out of me. You were perfect in it, along with the great cast around you. Thank you (I think😅) for all the sleepless times since. RIP.
My wife and I lived in Ferndale, California for a few months in 2015. The town is very much unchanged from the time Salem's Lot was filmed. The downtown, cemetery and houses are all just about the same. We really enjoyed walking around the town and visiting the movie locations. Old time locals told us that James Mason would go shopping in town, talking to everyone and that he was very nice and approachable.
There was no blood, no body-horror, nothing of that stuff, it was all about the atmosphere and imagination, and they nailed that. James Mason was fantastic, and so were you mr Soul. Reggie Nalder's Kurt Barlow/The Master is still the scariest, creepiest ancient vampire ever appeared on film. Salem's Lot really set the standard about horror movies with vampires. Great story, acting, lots of memorable scenes, impeccable atmosphere and vampires that were truly scary, real monsters, not the cool, handsome, mysterious boys that we see these days.
Salem's Lot is a Masterpiece of cinematic art. It had it all. David Soul. James Mason, Kenneth MacMillan, Geoffrey Lewis! Absolute perfection! Although restricted by television standards, THAT MOVIE scared the living ahit out of every kid in America. Each night was a segment of the mini-series, and the next day at school,we would meet at the doors to my Elementary school, and we talked about this movie every minute we got a chance to! On the home DVD of the Shining, there's a "making of" that Kubrick's daughter made, and James Mason showed up to visit with everybody on set.
I love ‘Salem’s Lot, love David Soul and am completely obsessed with the Marsten House. Much love, Mr. Soul, and thank you for bringing Ben Mears into my life.
OMG me too. I've always been obsessed with that house since I read the novel in the late 80s. I live in Massachusetts and there's a house here on the beach that's an old Gothic mansion. It's set back off the beach road all by itself. I've always called it the Marston House and my friends think I'm nuts lol.
This was the only movie to ever scare me as a kid, one of the most atmospheric horrors ever. David was excellent in this, along with the rest of the cast. A true modern-day classic. Even though I am looking forward to the reboot next year, I know for sure it could never compare to this masterpiece.
Yes that movie is responsible for many a sleepless night for me. I still think about it quite often and I'll be 57 tomorrow. It's patchy to me now, but the fear it instilled is not. The big floating outside the window was ridiculously scary to me as a child as well as the vampires. They truly smacked a home run with that freakshow. Nothing could replace it. I really like how David Soul acts here. He's so cool.
Happy Birthday. I'm a year behind you next month. Funny I was thinking about this the last couple weeks and here's this video. Think I'll have to watch it again but man, this was one of those that never left you once you saw it. This and Burnt Offerings gave me many, many sleepless nights. LOL! RIP David
Huge fan of David Soul and he was brilliant in this film, next to Misery one of the best King Adaptations, Seeing David against James Mason was fantastic and I still can’t sleep in a room with open curtains at night thanks to Ralphie Glick!
RIP David Soul. Great actor. When I saw this movie as a child it terrified me and I had trouble sleeping for a while. When I watch it now, it’s still a really great atmospheric movie
I'm a big fan of David Soul. It's a great pleasure listening to him talking about Salem's lot, the best vampire film ever. I'll never forget David Soul as Ben Mears. He was wonderful playing this role. Noboby would do it better than he did. Thanks David!!! You're a gift for me. You make me feel happy everytime I watch your movies and listen to your music. I know you played many roles during your career and I appreciated all of them. But let me tell you that you'll be the eternal HUTCH for me. Love you!!!!
What a movie!! Watched it for the first time last week. Holds up better than 99.9% of the things made these days. Glad to see you’re doing well, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this awesome film.
I've always had a soft spot for David Soul. One of the big radio hits of my favourite summer -- 1977 -- was "Silver Lady." My pals and I spent the school holidays camping in the hills, going home from time to time to re-stock on food, then heading back out. The transistor radio was always playing that song. R.I.P. DS
In the 70s before the movie came out, I read the book “Salem’s Lot” during the summer time full sun sky. I couldn’t put the book down for one second. That is how good a writer Stephen King is of horror stories. The paperback book was 2 inches thick, I was finished it very quickly.
So sorry he's gone now. What a nice guy he was. Soul walks you through the making of the mini series in this interview beautifully. Particularly enjoy Soul's remembrances of working with James Mason. Haven't seen the film in years but I thought the way Soul kept manhandling the kid played by Lance Kerwin in two or three scenes was unintentionally hilarious. 10:30

This was a brilliant film, scared the bejeezus outta me! Combined one of my favorite actors as the lead with one of my favorite authors. One of the small number of Stephen King's works that wasn't mauled in the process of turning it into a film. Definitely a classic!
This place is cursed, peck. It's falling apart. Open your eyes! - Madmartigan, Willow (1988) Because... for some people, solitude and isolation can, in itself, become a problem. - Mr. Stuart Ullman, The Shining (1980) It's a quiet, peaceful place, and yet, somehow... foreboding. It abounds in haunted spots, twilight tales and local superstitions. - Narrator, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) Supposin' the cops finger us for a job and they start asking us questions about a murder in the area. Wouldn't it be nice to have a face to go with their questions? - Harold "Harry" Lyme, Home Alone (1990)
R.I.P. actor Lance Kerwin aka Mark Petrie he just passed away at age 62.

There will *NEVER* be another "Salem's Lot". When *the monster* came up from the floor and clocked their heads together, I shit my pants!
Salems Lot still scares me after all these years. I was in High school when it first came on television.
This is on the Mount Rushmore of all time, television movies🖤
Good but the best was The Night Stalker…..
This was the only movie to ever scare me as a kid, one of the most atmospheric horrors ever. David was excellent in this, along with the rest of the cast. A true modern-day classic. Even though I am looking forward to the reboot next year, I know for sure it could never compare to this masterpiece.
What a class guy ! Great actor, great film ... will never be bettered !
LOL! RIP David
It‘s hard to believe actor and singer David Soul is almost 80 years old. The time sure goes by fast.
thank you DAVID SOUL for talking to us .
I loved Salems Lot, and of course David Soul, RIP x As a Brit, James Mason was one of our very best.
David Soul made me as a 10 year old want to be a novelist. He played Ben Mears better than he was in the novel. David Soul can act
_"They've found us again."_
I would have _loved_ a sequel that followed Ben and Mark on the run from the Marsten vampires.
Huge fan of David Soul and he was brilliant in this film, next to Misery one of the best King Adaptations, Seeing David against James Mason was fantastic and I still can’t sleep in a room with open curtains at night thanks to Ralphie Glick!
Paul, agreed, and I love King's books. But this one is really special.
That Ralphie Glick sure helped bed company's to sell more mattress's
RIP David Soul. Great actor. When I saw this movie as a child it terrified me and I had trouble sleeping for a while. When I watch it now, it’s still a really great atmospheric movie
I'm a big fan of David Soul. It's a great pleasure listening to him talking about Salem's lot, the
best vampire film ever. I'll never forget David Soul as Ben Mears. He was wonderful
playing this role. Noboby would do it better than he did.
Thanks David!!! You're a gift for me.
You make me feel happy everytime I watch your movies and listen to your music.
I know you played many roles during your career and I appreciated all of them. But let me tell you that
you'll be the eternal HUTCH for me. Love you!!!!
I saw this in the early 80s. It was very scary for a tv show and everybody in ireland loved it.
I used to watch it every year on vacation in Ireland - scared the bejeezus out of my whole family !
Its nice to see you David, Wishing you good health
What a movie!! Watched it for the first time last week. Holds up better than 99.9% of the things made these days. Glad to see you’re doing well, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this awesome film.
A touch of class is David Soul, would liked to have had a beer with him back in the day!
I've always had a soft spot for David Soul. One of the big radio hits of my favourite summer -- 1977 -- was "Silver Lady."
My pals and I spent the school holidays camping in the hills, going home from time to time to re-stock on food, then heading back out. The transistor radio was always playing that song.
R.I.P. DS
I wouldn’t bother to see a remake as SALEMS LOT will always be DAVID SOUL ❤️
Still the best, creepy show for television ever! And that goes for vampire movies too. James Mason was amazing. Great casting.
In the 70s before the movie came out, I read the book “Salem’s Lot” during the summer time full sun sky. I couldn’t put the book down for one second. That is how good a writer Stephen King is of horror stories. The paperback book was 2 inches thick, I was finished it very quickly.
R.I.P David Soul.
David Soul was a lovely man.
RIP
So sorry he's gone now. What a nice guy he was. Soul walks you through the making of the mini series in this interview beautifully. Particularly enjoy Soul's remembrances of working with James Mason. Haven't seen the film in years but I thought the way Soul kept manhandling the kid played by Lance Kerwin in two or three scenes was unintentionally hilarious. 10:30
This was absolutely fun to hear David Soul talk about Salem's Lot.
David it does not seems like 42 years have passed but it has! Salem's Lot is a vampire classic for me! I really enjoyed it and still watch it over again from time to time! Well done Sir!
My all time favourite horror film. Scared the shit out of me at 9 years old in 1979!! Still watch it and enjoy it today. Thanks for the info. 👏👏👏
I was 23 back then and found it plenty scary.
I was 9 in 1979 as well. I slept with crosses made out of clothes pegs stuck to the wall around my bed for weeks after. Great memories
@@moonbod8623 so pleased you wrote that. Me and my brother drew crosses on the condensation on the bedroom window ,..pre double glazing but great time to be a kid 😆
Watching this when I was a kid scared the crap out of me. It's still impactful today.
There IS only one Salem's Lot!
👍
Easily the most eerie /scary atmospheric Horror EVER ..The Vampires in it , the storyline & the actors suited every role ..The Best Horror film Ever 👌👌
Saw it on TV when it came out and it still scarys me 🇮🇪
I just watched the original Salem's Lot with my son and he loved it! He's studied film in college and he thought the special effects were incredible! I agree I don't know how you can top this original film, those are big shoes to step into! Always a fan David thanks for the behind the scenes tour!
David Soul was excellent in this and Salem’s Lot is one of the best vampire movies ever!
Rest in peace David. It went by so fast. Thank you for making my childhood so happy with Starsky and Hutch
Charming discussion by Mr. Soul. Love Salem's Lot! My favorite of all the Stephen King adaptations! RIP Lance Kerwin, and to all those we've lost who were part of this fantastic movie!
this movie, its makers and stars made this one of the best ever movies ever! i met david soul and what an absolute gentleman and legend he is and he signed my salems lot disc...i do hope we meet again..
I never saw Starsky & Hitch to me David Soul is The Salems Lot guy.
He did a great job so did James Mason.
Sorry to hear about Lance Kerwins death.
just heard the very sad news of the passing of David Soul @80 years young (Friday January 5th 2024)
REST IN PEACE the original BEN MEARS and HUTCH!!!
- Madmartigan, Willow (1988)
Because... for some people, solitude and isolation can, in itself, become a problem. - Mr. Stuart Ullman, The Shining (1980)
It's a quiet, peaceful place, and yet, somehow... foreboding. It abounds in haunted spots, twilight tales and local superstitions. - Narrator, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
Supposin' the cops finger us for a job and they start asking us questions about a murder in the area. Wouldn't it be nice to have a face to go with their questions? - Harold "Harry" Lyme, Home Alone (1990)
R.I.P David Soul, this film and you have been etched into my existence in a big way, thanks.
So glad I found this video. Love David Soul ❤️ love Salem's Lot and all the incredible talent the cast showed us. 👏
