I clearly remember seeing this clip by chance on TV long ago, and back then I already thought "God, how one is absolutely mesmerized by her glance, her tiniest move or change of expression throughout this gorgeous piece !" And she doesn't sing a single note here !!! She really was a magnetic force onstage AND an exceptional musician... I love the way she said to Lord Harewood once "If you want to know how to act a part, all you have to do is... LISTEN TO THE MUSIC." And, as on many other occasions, she fully proves it here !
Donna e artista completa in tutto.
“An opera begins long before the curtain goes up and ends long after it has come down. It starts in my imagination, it becomes my life, and it stays part of my life long after I've left the opera house.” - Maria Callas
Notice she didn't sing a note in these 2 minutes. But, then, she did. No one since has been able to sing through their bodies quite in this way. There have been lots of imitators but they remain poor country cousins at best, relatively.
« Sorgete ! » the first word she sings. And everything is there. She sounds like a giant ! She WAS Imogene even more than she was Norma. When people talk about Callas, it’s always about her Traviata, Norma, Tosca... Of course she is the best ever Violetta, the best ever Norma, the best ever Tosca, she is actually the best ever in all the roles she portrayed. Unmatched. But Imogene is different. She is not only the best ever Imogene. She is the incarnation of Imogene. Not only by her voice and the way she sings the role. To me, Imogene is Callas and Callas is Imogene.
December 2, 1923 - September 16, 1977 She became reclusive in her last year and died at her Paris apartment without receiving medical attention at age 53 from a heart attack (Sept. 16, 1977). She was cremated and her remains kept in a niche at the cemetery of Pere Lachaise until the spring of 1979 when the urn was taken by plane and scattered over the Aegean Sea off the coast of Greece. A niche plaque was placed as a memorial by the cemetery while indicating the now empty space was the initial resting place for the urn containing the ashes of Maria Callas.
I don’t agree! Callas was in the best shape the night the Pirata recording of the concert form was done... Ofcourse a year earlier with Corelli she may have had even more control over her high notes, but she must have gained more insight in the mean time. Her fast glorious fioriture passages are out of this world. Nobody even comes close to her in this role. Maybe in others but this one is hers from beginning to end
mario jimenez yes, I know, it is a well known fact, clearly visible during her Lady MacBeth aria ( and not only). I was referring to the full Pirata recording from Carnegie Hall versus how she may have sounded in the 58 Scala interpretation
There never was.... isn't, and never will be another like her....ever!!....thank you 😘
