- Welcome to The Hub ladies and gentlemen! The Normies get super frustrated at Skye and react to the 7th episode of Season 1 of Agents of Shield! We're a few episodes ahead now and coming around to liking most of the characters. Skye just frustrated us here by going off book but that is well within her character I suppose! What did you think of this episode and our reactions? Lets us know in the comments!

Coulson and his team get a bit more leeway than most agents, because it's Coulson, who he is, what was done to him, and his relationship with Fury. You'll learn more as the show goes on. Chris is already trying to make some connections I see.
Basically Coulson is director's fave, so he and his team can do a lot of things that will be forgiven easily which won't be forgiven for others :)
Yeah, Fury is also unorthodox and sometimes bucks HIS leaders. If it works out, he respects it. If it doesn't work out, you're screwed. Seems like Hand is also like that. It all worked out, no assets died, all's good.

I give Skye some leeway in this episode since it makes sense she might have a complex about being kept in the dark regarding people she cares about, given her complete lack of information about her family.

If Skye hadn't gone off book, they wouldn't know there wasn't an extraction team -- and their guys might have been captured or killed. While a lot of people were upset at Agent Hand and the whole "Trust the system" ideology, I think they're missing the point. Hand herself said at the end "It was Coulson's team - they didn't need an extraction team"... suggesting that Hand was counting on the undisciplined hacker on their team to hack in, learn the truth and force the team to save their own guys. Bottom line, Hand is part of the system they're supposed to trust; as a level 9, she correctly strategized the outcome -- so maybe she wasn't wrong after all.
Poor Finian I Know they just did episode 20 but they just don't like Skye
I don't think Hand was counting on that. I think she was saving face in front of other Level 8 agents like Sitwell. Saying stuff like "yup that was my plan all along" rather than "nah i planned for two agents to die but Coulson swooped in and saved them, proving I'm a little incompetent."
Skye is a fuckup throughout the whole series.
Barton, Natasha, and May don't need an extraction plan. They're so well trained that they are able to turn a mission around by themselves.

Coulson is kind of Fury's favorite, a veteran agent and he played huge role in getting avengers together and saving the world, so he gets away with more things than he probably should, like getting a hole blown in his new plane or his subordinate shooting someone. But at the same time as this episode shows, he still has tight leash around him in regards of what he knows or does not know and there's clearly more going on around him than meets the eye.
I'm just waiting for episode 16 to happen and I wish I could time travel.

Two episodes a week are needed for this show. Trust me. The quicker you catch up, the more you'll find out and the more amazed with the show, you will become. Sorry for sounding a bit like Yoda but it's true.
Craigy2818 So true! Everyone finally catching up to this show, regrets waiting. The first season is the slowest, then it really kills it. And yes, looove Fitz. And the actor is sensational, just wait!

SHIELD is halfway between the Kingsmen and the CIA. SHIELD answers to the President technically but a lot of it is self-contained. Coulson and his team are in sort of a special situation though.
At this point Shield answers to the World Security Council, that changed after CA:Winter Soldier.
Back during the events of this episode, SHIELD answered to the World Security Council (formed by the UN to oversee SHIELD after its creation in the late 1940s). Each of the major countries had a representative and the US Government's representative was Alexander Pierce (the dude giving Fury orders in Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Fury is the Director of SHIELD and is Level 10.

Dana says- Biggest mass reaction from you guys in 7 episodes: Ward tossing Fitz's sandwich. Ha ha ha! Totally understandable. I also understand what you're saying about Skye not following chain of command but try and remember that this is very in keeping with her character. She's a young, brash, independent thinker who is used to only looking out for herself and following what she thinks is best, instead of following someone else's rules and regulations. She's never even had the structure of a family growing up. Also, until she met Coulson she was very into the whole anti-government, don't-trust-the-establishment movement. That was her identity. That it is taking longer for her to get on board with the government/military mindset is very understandable. Frustrating sometimes, but understandable. She grows to understand and value the structure and benefits of a team more and more as time goes on. But she's never a straight up 100% "company man" or yes man for SHIELD. Thanks for the great reaction. I wish late season 1 was here already for you guys, but it's important to see these early ones, because - reasons.
Thank you so much for wiritng this. Best comment on Skye's character I have ever read. People really do not understand her much, I keep seeing them complaining about her alleged "betrayals" when she actually was never on SHIELD team the first 5 episodes. She started warming up to them after FZZT, and when she realized Coulson was really trying to help her find her parents.
17:28 Skye couldn't do otherwise to put her plan in motion. Remember she had that bracelet that prevented her from entering the restricted area, so she had to ask Simmons for help. And Simmons was in it because she too wanted to know how Fitz was doing. So they were really partners in crime at that point.
Rip sandwich :((( I always believed that Hand was just testing Coulson's team in this episode. They were greenwood at this point and she probably wanted to see what they would do.

Chris my man, you have *no* idea the amazing character development Skye will go through.
The jet hovertech is the same thing that allows a harrier to do vertical take offs and landings as well as hover and that plane has only been around and in service since 1967.
I'm so glad you guys are finally enjoying the show. from here on out, it's amazing. There's a few shaky episodes left in season one, but after that, every single episode is fantastic.

I always figured it was just a stylistic spelling. Later episodes do the same thing.
Skye exists at this point in the show to be the catalyst to make us all question shield's hierarchy. That feels important to me. Also I think shield is an independent entity not a government asset.

You guys were too hard on poor Skye this episode. Yeah, she's reckless, but she has good reasons for her lack of trust here. And I mean, Coulson is a good man, but a lot of SHIELD people aren't.
Yeah you don't know the half of that one....yet.

swanpride Yeah, the execution of the episode was dumb but I think for the first time watching they won’t care as much just because of the concept of the episode. I don’t want to spoil it :P
I would advise doing 2 episodes per week since if you continue at this rate it might take you years to finish the series and probably miss S6 if AoS does get renewed.

How did I just learn that you guys are watching AOS now? You guys are a great reaction channel. I guess I didn’t realize you still needed to watch this. This show, as a 45 year old female fan of good tv, consider this one of the best acted and most cohesive shows on tv. The stories build upon themselves by the end of season 1. Originally, I had stopped half way through season 1, because I thought it was going to stay episodic. My teenage sons begged me to catch up, which I finally did. You’ll grow to love these guys, all of them, and wonder why you waited, too.

Okay Fitz's glow up over the seasons is also worth the watch alone. He goes from puppy to absolute hottie haha.
Looking back at this show now, I remember the first half of season 1 happens right before Captain America "Winter Soldier." Second half season 1 right after "Winter Soldier," and show changes it's tone dramatically. A lot of people gave up on AOS at half season Mark and totally missed out on a great show. Hopefully, The Normies hang in there because I think they will love it.
More precisely, Winter Soldier was released between episodes 16 and 17.

I heard this episode was written specifically because Iain De Caestecker (Fitz) and Brett Dalton (Ward) became very fast friends on set; that bit near the end of the second episode, where Ward puts his hand on Fitz's shoulder as the team watches the shuttle fly away, was improvised by Dalton IIRC. The producers felt that they should tap into the chemistry the actors (and thus their respective characters) had and so wrote this episode for them... incidentally, my theory is that the following episode was meant to air as the seventh episode (considering this was the very first to air after "Thor: The Dark World") and was subsequently pushed back, although I could be mistaken.
According to the episodes producer, Megan Thomas Bradner, FZZT is not an acronym; it is the sound of the static electricity.
Gotta love the deleted scene from this episode. Simmons goes to tell May about Sitwell and interrupts her doing her Tai Chi. May tells her not to bother her, and Simmons say "I shot someone". Doesn't specify who, nothing else other than that. May sighs, stops her Tai Chi and says "Where's the body?"
a) Given that she said body, I have to assume that means she though Simmons had killed someone. b) there is no questioning no scolding, just jumps into we got to hide it. c) May still says it in that complete dead pan voice, no emotion. Just let's get this done
On a separate note, I don't like Prosciutto, Mozzarella, or Pesto, and that sandwich sounds delicious

Man, Clark Gregg has aged so much since this show started. Between seasons one and five, it looks like he aged ten years.
Vertical take odd and landing technology has been around since the 1950s. I've only seen it on fighter jets, but the principle is applicable to larger planes with moreturbines which their jet definitely seemed to have.

Rhodey is an officer in the US military. That's why he can be court martialed. Civilians, like members of SHIELD, cannot. They don't answer to the US military. And SHIELD does not have an authority to bring their members to court. Legally, they can just fire them.

All these levels of hierarchy and hiding of information is what made it so easy for Hydra to infiltrate SHIELD from the beginning. The entire point of Winter Soldier was Cap trying to break all these barriers and it ultimately led to the reveal of Hydra and the fall of SHIELD. Blindly following orders never works out.

I love rewatching them series with you guys. I'm picking up on so many clues and hints foreshadowing later seasons. Almost everyone you shit on the writers or the characters, I see how you guys are missing what's actually going on.

Hey guys, next episode has a very minor tie-n to Thor 2 in the first scene, nothing very relevant. But remember to watch Winter Soldier between episodes 16 and 17, it is VERY important.
I too never understood why Hand just didn't tell them to extract Fitz and Ward right away. I guess that was one of the only episodes in the show that I didn't understand why some character did something. I don't always agree to the character but usually I do understand them. Not this time though.

This episode had some funny moments, but it's still maybe the episode that I like the least in the first season.

I'm late to this party but I just felt like chiming in. Ya'll so angry at Skye this episode but I agree with her 100%. This is the same organization that Hydra was able to infiltrate. Besides Coulson brought her on the team specifically because she wasn't SHIELD. Of course she wasn't going to gel with the whole keeping secrets as a hacker who thinks all that should be out in the open to begin with. And she was right. There was no plan to get Fitz and Ward out. If it weren't for her they might not have made it out at all.

They dont even try. They just nitpick. Each time I try watching a reaction I have to close it. These are the people who saw 1 episode way back in 2013, didnt like it and talk shit each time the shows mentioined.
I'd rather we be real about it and then if the show grows on us over time, the reactions will be that much better. Nobody likes it when people just saying they like something for the sake of liking it/views. We're giving it our honest shot. Different characters grow on different people. I'm sure with time we may feel different about most of the opinions we have currently on the show.

The Normies That's not what people are talking about though, I understand if some plot points or characters don't interest you right away, but people have a problem with the nitpicking and overly harsh criticism. For example in this episode, you guys immediately jumped into "bad writing" when the power went out, instead of waiting to see if the show would explain itself, and then you almost missed the explanation. If you guys ease off in later episodes, great. I love your other reactions, it just seems this show doesn't get the same treatment

razashield2617 Wait wait wait, lets not start saying that the opinions of anyone who gave up on this show at first are invalid. A large chunk of the people who watch this show now had to come back to it later once they heard good stuff about it. In fact, these guys still say they like the episodes overall. Just cuz they're not "hooked" or see flaws doesn't mean they're not enjoying it. Hell, I've been with this show since day one and I still see flaws (don't even get me started on all the dumb things Skye has done). I even see flaws with some of the best movies of the MCU like Civil War and Thor Ragnarok, and where they are watching at right now in the show is definitely not in the same ballpark as these films, so the fact they're still having fun should mean something. I guarantee they'll like this show more by the time it starts to shift its narrative, but until then, what I've seen from them so far doesn't seem bad. They actually show me that they're trying.
It's so weird to see Skye and Coulson arguing about clearance levels now when we know who she actually is. :D
This is another reason why Shield should be watched twice.
