  • RIRS stands for Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat kidney stones. During RIRS, a thin, flexible tube called a ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra and into the urinary tract to reach the kidney. The ureteroscope allows the surgeon to visualize the stones and perform various techniques to remove or break them up.
Symptoms associated with kidney stones can vary depending on the size and location of the stone. Some common symptoms include:
Severe pain: The most prominent symptom of kidney stones is often intense pain. This pain is typically felt in the back or side below the ribs and may radiate to the lower abdomen and groin. The pain can come in waves and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
Hematuria: Kidney stones can cause blood in the urine, known as hematuria. The urine may appear pink, red, or brown in color. Hematuria can occur intermittently, and the presence of blood can vary depending on the movement of the stone within the urinary tract.
Urinary urgency and frequency: Some individuals with kidney stones may experience an increased urge to urinate and may need to urinate more frequently. This symptom can occur due to the irritation caused by the stone or obstruction of the urinary tract.
Urinary tract infection (UTI): In some cases, kidney stones can lead to urinary tract infections. UTI symptoms may include pain or a burning sensation during urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, and a frequent urge to urinate.
Difficulty urinating: Larger kidney stones can obstruct the flow of urine, causing difficulty in urination. This can result in decreased urine output or a complete inability to urinate.
It's important to note that not everyone with kidney stones will experience symptoms. Small stones may pass through the urinary tract unnoticed, while larger stones can cause significant discomfort and complications. If you suspect you have kidney stones or are experiencing symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
