Absolutely. Her comic timing was exquisite. Contrary to a side comment from Groucho on Dick Cavet that Dumont didnt get they were telling jokes, of course he was kidding.
I'm 53 years old and have loved the Marx brothers for as Long as I can remember. Groucho is pure Genius. It's 2019 and it has not got old. (At least to me) Is that not saying something ?
The Marx Bros. Especially Groucho always insisted on working with Margaret Dumont when the script called for a "wealthy dowager"for Groucho to "romance"! No other actress would do they REALLY liked working with her and wouldn't settle for anyone else!
in reality, Dumont, a trained stage actress, knew the scripts and their ridiculous insults well. She was doing her job. The Marxes, "Julie" in particular, wouldn't have been nearly as funny without her.
she was an invaluble find.as groucho explained our genius and problem was that from our very sucessful stage days wed take a play then subvert it! no two performances were alike even sometimes we didnt know what wed do or say onstage until we did it! with my brothers it was no problem as whatever i said or did theyd pick up on and reply with something funny.our big worry were the straight actors whod stand there like statues not recognising their cue.it often killed the joke! on movies when we started we did the same ! chico shouted out to the writers once on animal crackers when you hear a line you wrote shout bingo! margaret was brilliant whatever we said to her often unscripted shed react in the same haughty yet puzzled way a real trouper.we never threw her and her reactions made the gags! i did a tv version of the cocaonuts live in the 50s with her.she sadly died 3 days later.i entranced to hooray for captain spaulding added my own lyrics and completely improvised for ten minutes! threw the show into chaos....except for margaret every new line i threw at her never phased her she proceeded as if wed rehearsed it for months howlingly funny and completely oblivious to my alterations as always she acted as if my gags made perfect sense and i was completely normal! she was a wonder to her practically dying day!
Can anyone post of the clip of the scene with the song, “If It’s You”? It’s lovely. I found it years ago and now it’s not here anymore. I see just the audio recording but not the scene. It’s beautiful to watch him sing and play and the woman’s reaction.
Margaret Dumont was a great foil for Groucho; she felt real affection for "Julie", as she called him (Groucho's given name was Julius). He thought that she genuinely didn't understand the script's insults. Dumont died in 1965.
Groucho in real life left much to be desired. His sister-in-law Susan (Harpo's wife), who knew him well, was asked if his real personality matched that of his character. You bet your life it does, she replied.
That wasn't told right. The man contestant had, I think, 10 children; Groucho asked him why he had so many, the man shrugged and said, "I just like children." Groucho looked at the audience and said, "I like my cigar, but I take it out of my mouth." This double entendre gives rise to many different versions of the story, but I don't think that the man was annoyed.
Margaret did the Show The Hollywood Palace with Groucho in 1965 the last public appearance she made , she died two weeks later . It was only fitting that it was with Jer Julie aka Groucho
Groucho said that he lost interest in movie-making when Irving Thalberg died, and that the last films were made because Chico, a gambler with debts, needed the money.
I was a shop lifter for three years ! Simply fast and brilliant
I never get tired of watching the Marx brothers. They were geniuses of comedy. I love them they were awesome and very funny and talented
Totally agree with you
they have been a huge
funny side to my life.😁😁😁👍
Margaret Dumont was an amazing straight woman in these films. You could tell at times she was having a ball..
she is amazing in this role of straight character
Absolutely. Her comic timing was exquisite. Contrary to a side comment from Groucho on Dick Cavet that Dumont didnt get they were telling jokes, of course he was kidding.
"That's rather a personal question, isn't it, old man? How I do and what I do is my concern!" - Wolf J. Flywheel 🤣
love the marx brothers...they where the best form of comedy...love them on saturday late shows.....
Brilliant writing, especially how Groucho repeatedly "turns it around" to his favor.

With you sir.
Especially in these times.
With you on that. Similar age.
Dumont was possibly the one of the best straight person ever in the business.
Right up there with Bud Abbott imo
She was lovely.
'Why that's Byron ; he was thinking of you : brilliant writing
The Marx's brothers were awesome and funny geniuses before their time.
@John Caulfield that's great for you. I don't like the Beatles never have, never will
I'm 40 been a fan of Marx Brothers as long as I can remember.

La Dumont, was a pillar in most of their films.
The Marx brothers were always very very very funny. Some of the greatest comedians of all time.
in reality, Dumont, a trained stage actress, knew the scripts and their ridiculous insults well. She was doing her job. The Marxes, "Julie" in particular, wouldn't have been nearly as funny without her.
He was hilarious in You Bet Your Life and Dumont was not to be seen.
She was a CLASS ACT amongst heathens!

The woman in that scene was played by Clara Blandick, Aunt Em in "The Wizard of Oz".
Hilarious 😂 The king of comedy
Not one if their better films, still the greatest ever!!!!!
What Experience do you have in a department store? Well I was a shoplifter for 3 years. Classic Grouchy.
Still funny after all these years.
"The Big Store" was the last film for Dumont and the Marxes together.

The first morning out I shot an elephant in my pajamas,
How he got in my pajamas Ill never know.
Wonder why that always gets misquoted.
"Where did you ever learn such nice poetry?" "I worked five years for Burma Shave." hahahahahahahahaha Groucho was the best!!!!!!!!!
the lady is so graceful
People don't get nowadays how outrageous Groucho was - he would have a field day with the wokists!
Groucho was liberal democrat 😬
Can you upload the scene with Tommy Rogers singing "Tenement Symphony"? Please?

Coach
@Bruno56 I don't get the joke with the cigars line.

"If he's Tommy Rogers then you must be Tommy Rot."
Wolfe J Flywheel! Hilarious!
One of Groucho Marx's imaginative pseudonyms.
From Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel, a radio show with Chico.
Legend
The quality of their movies deteriorated when Thalberg died, but not of their humor.
Groucho said that he lost interest in movie-making when Irving Thalberg died, and that the last films were made because Chico, a gambler with debts, needed the money.
Thalberg had the movie material "road-tested" through live performance, to see what worked.
2:24 me too!
No good
He has a wife and 3 kids 😂
Back when you could Smoke anywhere you wanted.
The world needs a new Margaret Dumont
Simply the Best
I swear Margaret Dumont and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have the same smile.
"you mean that a woman of your cultureandmoneyandbeautyandmoneyandwealthandmoney would marry that imposter>?" 😆😆❤❤
Bracia Marx są nieśmiertelni a najmłodszy z nich to na prawdę amant.
your eyes so blue,
your heart so true,
your lips divine,
