  • This video explores the basics of Haitian history and politics to explain why the events surrounding the Haitian Revolution set the pattern for what Haiti is today. In particular it answers the question of why Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. It goes through the US occupation, the Papa Doc years, Aristide to the current 2020 protests.

    This was a very interesting video and it gave me a better understanding of Haiti. As a next door neighbour, being from the DR myself, I was surprised to see no mention of the 1822 invasion and the one island policy since it must have had an impact also, and still does to this day. I see you mention in a comment that you state this in the DR video, which I plan to see next, but I would love to see a video taking this into account as well. Thanks

      I know this is an old thread but from a Haitian history review the 1822 Occupation didn't do much for them except give a good reason to kick Boyer out. Which he does discuss briefly as a leader that wasn't trusted. Boyer sent troops to the leader who lead the strike for Dominican independence and that's it. If it was for any other intent, it obviously failed and did nothing for Haiti.

      No one wants to talk about that because it would make Haiti an “Oppressor” and not a victim. They spent 22 years trying their best to destroy the DR. Then spent the next 15 years attacking the DR border towns and cities in failed invasion attempts. They could’ve spent that time building up the country and society but they didn’t.

    A very good and informative short documentary.
    I'm a proud middle-aged Haitian American man from Flatbush, Brooklyn, and I have immense pride in my culture and history!
    The only problem that I had with this documentary is that even upon victory over white supremacy and oppression, the narrator managed to make it sound negative!
    I know that my ancestral homeland is suffering due to some of our poor decisions, (The United States has also made some bad decisions in its history), and I'm willing to accept that.
    However, most of these problems began with white supremacy and continue with that to this present day!
    We as people of African ancestry were and are still surviving this cancer, but the first indigenous people of this land perished.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is how the video begins.
      "Nationalists in many places often blame outside countries, whether the United States, Europe or someone as the ultimate cause for whatever problems a particular country faces. These claims are often exaggerated. But in the case of Haiti, they are spot on." I'm really not sure how you think the video makes white supremacist rule sound positive for Haiti.

      @zroy9263 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Crónica Panamericana
      I didn't say that this video advocated white supremacy!
      What I'm saying is that I didn't hear anything about the Haitian revolution being the most successful slave rebellion in the history of the modern western hemisphere.
      Despite all the problems that Haiti has faced over the past centuries, this history is what makes me the proudest!
      Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines were cunning, intelligent, and brutal!
      We as a people fought as men!
      Joe Biden was proud to sign some bullshit for JUNETEENTH, but I would rather celebrate TAKING my freedom rather than celebrate being GIVEN my freedom!

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zroy9263 the Haitian Revolution is not the most successful slave rebellion. It's the only successful slave rebellion.

      You're correct! And this achievement has been suppressed from the world for a reason. This is mentioned briefly, in this documentary.
      The majority of Black Americans are oblivious to this history. Even though they have praised THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King. Sadly, even though these great organizations and people made a difference, they were all illuminated.
      Our successful slave rebellion changed the state of mind of prosperous Haitians like my parents' generations.
      The economic oppression that France and the United Snakes Of America have placed upon my ancestral homeland has made slavery more appealing to a lot of people within the western hemisphere!

    LIES 8:16 *Please* explain how Spain continued to pressure the black rebels in Saint Domingue after 1794. I believe the Spanish were also freeing slaves, prior to the JACOBINS in the French Republic in 1794. And besides, Spain lost control of the east in 1795. They weren't trying to reintroduce slavery either. They created a black Auxiliary Army to UNITE THE ISLAND. To begin with, they had very few slaves. Let's be realistic. The fight for control of the empires in the West Indies came from the British. Especially since they controlled southern Saint Domingue for about 7 years, even after 1794. Let's be real. Stop downplaying Spain. I don't think you know history. Thank you.

And plenty of countries whose economic problems have more to do with internal mismanagement rather than outside intervention even when it exists (Cuba, North Korea, Iran).

    I noticed the author keep saying Africans. So called Haitians are the Israelites according to the Bible. Their Biblical names are the LEVIS:evi (/ˈliːvaɪ/; Hebrew: לֵוִי‎, Modern: Levī, Tiberian: Lēwī) was, according to the Book of Genesis, the third son of Jacob and Leah, and the founder of the Israelite Tribe of Levi (the Levites, including the Kohanim) and the great-grandfather of Aaron, Moses and Miriam. The Hebrew Bible introduces Levi as one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Genesis 29:34), and hence the “father” of one of the tribes of ancient Israel. ... Rather, they are set aside for special priestly activities (Numbers 1:47-53), to assist Aaron (Numbers 3:5-9), and to be consecrated to Yahweh (Numbers 3:11-13).

      This is because nearly 1 million of the oppressed people were brought from Africa and most of the rest were their children. Sooooo they were, effectively of African descent, just like the tribes that were there long before colonizers. The difference between those already residing in Hispaniola before colonization and those after is that one group traveled and settled voluntarily from African countries, and the latter group was forced.
