This movie really messed me up. Its very emotionally traumatizing...to me at least. I've watched it twice and every time I watch it I feel like I need to see a therapist lol. I LOVE this movie but I hate it.
It really takes a lot to make me uncomfortable because i watch a lot of gore and violent movies....but there's something about this movie that's so unsettling especially that scene with the banana..
As a fan of the book, the problem I had with this adaptation was how they presented Lolita as a character. The movie makes it seem as though she was in love with him as well, when the novel clearly depicts that any love she had for him quickly died with the death of her mother.
WillFoxification While even in the novel she did come on to him the way the movie shows it, it always seemed to me as if she was only flirting with him to spite her mother. However after she finds out her mom is dead, she no longer has any reason to want a romantic relationship with Humbert, as she no longer has a mother to terrorize with it. Even in the early stages of their relationship, Humbert tells the reader that Lolita sobs every night after they have sex. Lolita doesn't even want Humbert to touch her, always telling him to "cut it out" or "stop touching me you dirty pervert". This leads Humbert to begin buying Lolita items to get her to do trivial things like hug him, or kiss him on the cheek. However the movie portrays it as Lolita being the one to use her sexuality to manipulate Humbert into giving her the things she wants.
Lilah Zerambo That's an interesting approach to the whole dynamic. Haven't read the novel I can't really say how different they are, but with the film, to me, it always seemed like Humbert was the one who wanted something out of this relationship. You're exactly right, the only reason Lo flirted with Humbert was to piss off her mom, and once she's out of the picture, she wants to get as far away from him as possible until he starts appeasing her with gifts. You're right though, in the movie she does use her sexuality to get Humbert to do things for her that he probably wouldn't normally do. By the end of the film you can tell she wanted nothing to do with him because as she matures she realizes how messed up she was and how she basically a prisoner of his. I'm glad you shared the differences between the film and the novel though, I had no idea!
I was disgusted with male character it was pretty enlightening about the bitter facts that how a child is being forced and manipulated into doing something pretty hideous just to fulfill respective persons carnal desires.
Correct, it was a carnal and emotional desire. In the beginning of the film, he fell in love with a young girl and after she had died, Humbert was emotionally stuck at that age. Hence, he seeks out Lolita.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the lack of a father figure in Lolita's life. She clearly uses her sexuality around older men to get the attention that she craves. I have had a number of (much older!) girlfriends that have exhibited some of the behaviours that Lolita portrayed. I thought the film was genius in this observation of a girl with so-called ''daddy issues''.
@@WillFoxification one had a father that died whilst she was young, one had no dad at all and one had a very incompetent dad that did drugs and alcohol etc. All three girls relatable to this character!!
WillFoxification Seeing it when it came out & as a young man I had to see the ending in order to know that "the monster" was killed & felt unsatisfied & disgusted with its ending. As i remembered I felt sorry for her. This movie is like 20 yrs old & I don't remember what was his & the other guys motivation.
I just got done with "Lolita" and this a the first time that I'm watching this video because I wanted to go in blind and man I was blind 😂 I have to agree with you about how Lolita dressed is what Humbert wants to see, it's awesome that you pointed that out 👍 As I was watching "Lolita" I felt it's very simular to "The Collector" (1965) beautiful movie btw if you have not seen it The ending was really bad in my opinion But I'm still gonna give it 9/10 just like you because I really think it's a great movie 😊 And as always.....love your work 👏👏👏
Thanks, Christopher! I haven't had a chance to see the Collector yet, but now I feel like I definitely should! Yeah I think a 9/10 is pretty fair. It's a really odd movie, but I can't say it's not dramatic :P
"The Collector" (1965) is way more controversial then "Lolita" "The Collector" (1965) was inspiration to many serial killers such as Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, Christopher Wilder and Robert Berdella Now you may think "The Collector" (1965) is super fucked up movie but it's not.....let's just say different people see it in a different way....if you go in with a clear open mind....it's actually a beautiful love story gone wrong Those serial killer took it the wrong way and ruined the reputation of the movie/book
I know it's sound horrible....I shouldn't have said all that 😂 but trust me it's worth a watch "it's actually one of the only 60s movie that I enjoyed"
It's a very deep movie. People with extraordinary talent can know the deep meaning of this movie.its a massage of how 2 sides are merged in the destruction of the dad's and daughter's relationship that how sexual emotion if not controled can dostroy one and another life in a very soul breaking way.
I literally just finished this movie like 10 minutes ago and it made me so uncomfortable and the ending was so confusing with the old guy playing the piano like what was even going on? The whole second half of the movie is honestly so confusing to me....
The old guy was half naked when Jeremy went their knowing what the old guy did to lo. Sometime after Jeremy pulled the first trigger and the old guy almost confessed what he is doing ( his dark side ), he was seen fully naked. So in my pov. He is shawn naked because his inner and outer selves are not secrets anymore. If u ask abt the piano thing, since the old guy is a play wright he wanted to add some music to the plot where he is being murdered and to make Jeremy not kill him after seeing his worth. But the fact that piano music continues even after he stops playing shows that the role of a playwright is now in Jeremy's hand since the story is shown in his perspective. The music intensifies when the villain of Jeremy's story is about to die and suddenly stops when the bullet hits his head or somewhere.
IMO one of the greatest movies ever made. Every scene was like a work of art. This movie will lift you up and let you down gracefully and yes, drag you through the dirt just before wiping your tears and leaving you changed forever.
So true your comment was beautifully put and I agree with that 100% I hate to see so many people when they don't understand the reasoning and the meaning story writer had behind this story when they wrote it, when they say that this story and movie is horrible and is cringy and stuff like that it really just makes me sad for those people because they will never understand the pain and twists and turns of this movie and what truly makes it amazing
She didn't. Its told from his perspective. A raper doesn't see himself as a raper. His perspective says Lolita makes the moves, but for real she doesn't love him. Correct me if I'm wrong
I came here after studying the Lolita style for my English CBA, I wanted to know where the name 'Lolita' originated. I watched the movie and now I am here. I don't think I'll be putting it on my CBA
Is no one gonna talk about how amazing the music is? It often matches the scene, kind of forshadowing what's going to happen. Like when they're at the gas station and she started her affair with Quilty (however his name is written), she even sings something along the lines of "My hearts been gone to new temptation". The movie is just so well made, it's been thought of every detail and there's so much to take out of it
Thank you for the kind words! Idk man you'd have to ask the TH-cam community. I just started like a little over 2 months ago or so and its really hard for me to show up in the search results because all the big guys go straight to the top and the rest of us go unseen. It'll take some time to gain traction I think but I'm really glad you like the videos, it means a lot that you said that!
I'm came looking for a review of this movie after watching it to see what other people thought. This movie was good but the whole concept and idea of the romance and relationship was just awkward to watch
Agreed, man! It's a very dark and twisted movie that's very pretty good quality, but it's incredibly awkward indeed. The police are gonna bust down our doors any second:P
Honestly that’s the only part I felt bad for him he was 14 in love with another girl his age and she died of an illness was the only part where I empathized with him I guess just a boy version of himself but definitely not the adult him...yikes no
Okay I read the book and saw the movie. I think it's unrealistic how many people are denying that Lolita had a crush on Humbert, and did not know what she was doing. She clearly went after him sexually. And I think more with the internet today, we know that can happen. I have read many anonymous posts of teen girls online who admitted going after older men and had physical relationships with them. It's possible that Lo was sexually abused by some other family friend even before this, which made her more aggressive with Hum. For example when Humbert asked her if Charley at camp was her first guy, she did not answer, tellingly. However, even if she did go after Hum, it is the job of the adult to say no. Because if not, then you get into the big mess that Lo and Hum got into later, that Nabokov brilliantly wrote about. It shows you that taboos are taboo for a reason.
I think you zeroed in on the main problem with this film: Jeremy Irons. He is such a sympathetic and meek kind of guy that he is too easy to like, and the book made it clear that Humbert was an unreliable narrator. The film doesn't make it clear enough that we are supposed to hate and despise him, not sympathize with him. Otherwise it was beautifully shot and well acted, but that one thing made the film a huge failure compared to Kubrick's version, where it's obvious that Humbert is a sexual predator.
When I watched this movie..I was confused in a few scenes were you can see Lolitas hands are black..and in a different scene her feet are black and almost rotting..flys can be heard in that scene too..what did this mean?? Was it a metaphor?
Awesome review! It's therapeutic to see someone else talk about this movie because if it's all in my own head I will go insane lol. It's that gross a film. I wish you had talked about the end scene a bit with *warning spoiler* the whole shootout. I'm interesting in hearing why you think they chose to make the man killed at the end naked and why he randomly started playing the piano that one time. I think I know why but I'm curious as to what you think! This is the first video I've seen off your channel, are your reviews usually spoiler free?
Haha thanks, dude! I really appreciate that. Yeah I usually do spoiler-free reviews because since this isn't my full time job sadly I can only do so many and I try to get to every film and request I can. I rarely do spoiler reviews sadly cause my other work outside of YT keeps me from doing so :(. I really don't understand why he just starts playing the piano like that. I kinda took it as a hint that he was on drugs or something and just sorta lost his mind. It's an odd artistic decision for sure and I was pretty confused by it.
WillFoxification ofc! And yah I totally understand. I'm glad you love TH-cam and do it anyway. :) I thought that he did it out of nervousness, as one last effort to sway him into thinking that he could bribe him into not killing him with the music. And when he stopped touching the keys and the piano kept going, I felt that was there to emphasize how much of a liar and cheater he was and that he meant nothing that he said.
Yeah that sounds like a totally logical explanation. He tried to do it as one last ditch effort to convince Humbert to not kill him. But yeah thanks! I hope to make this my full time job one day, but we'll see what happens :). I'm glad you enjoyed the review! Lolita was a really odd, yet interesting film.
@@WillFoxification I think Humbert THINKS he loves her. He wants to paint it as a romance, but in reality he's a predator who knows he can control her specifically because she's a minor. She's too young to drive or live on her own yet, and he KNOWS this, so swoops in as her "dad" with intentions to turn her into some daughter-wife type of figure, which in itself is extremely messed up and creepy. He sees she is unhappy in this suffocating role he's forced her into, yet his priority is getting her to satisfy his sexual urges, even when she sobs afterwards in the hotel. Even when she grows cold toward his advances so he begins to pay her and turns her into his 14-year-old prostitute. He's selfish, controlling, suffocating, creepy and predatory, and psychologically he damaged her for life. I felt terrible for her.
You should have informed everyone that the movie was based on a book by Vladimir Nabokov. It was been ranked one of the BEST pieces of literature from the 20th century. This is alongside The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird. It is personally my favorite book of all time because of its amazing meaning, and the authors use of metaphors and representations. His vocabulary is absolute exquisite and the language itself is breathtaking. The final line of the book reads: "I am thinking of aurochs and angels, the secret of durable pigments, prophetic sonnets, the refuge of art. And this is the only immortality you and I may share, my Lolita.". I would recommend this book in a heartbeat as it will stick with you forever and being out all emotions within you.
Awesome! It is a great book I hear. I did mention it was based on the novel around 43 seconds though :). I do wanna read the book, but honestly I'm not a big reader :(
noo i thought she was 14 not 12 thats even more disturbingggg also when they died within a month of eachother in the end i cried whyyyyy i need to read this book asap
I haven't seen the 1997 rendition of this movie..I saw the 60s version of it. It was pretty intense and I was drawn in almost immediately. It calls attention to the challenges of single parent households and the strange men who visit them.
i just finished this movie 10 minutes ago and want to know what people think. I love this movie, i love movies where i am compelled to "think". I love how beautiful the cinematography is, the music is amazing, and humbert's narrating voice is smooth that makes this movie almost.. poetic ?? some things i am still confused about : 1. how the mother really die in the beginning 2. what happen actually with dolores and quilty 3. toward the end is humbert losing his mind? 4. is he leaving her and respecting her decision to not follow him somehow a redemption for him? 5. in the movie lolita is the one that's making advances first, what does that tell us about humbert?
I never read the novel just seen the movie multiple times I just can't help but wonder what Lolita's views of Humbert is. Like when she starts to hate him and if she ever does consider their inappropriate sexual relationship consensual. The movies way shows it as at first it is but than it because something she does to get things. (Please don't tell me of course it isn't consensual she's a child.but as I stated In her point of view)
Yeah I think in the beginning she does consider it consensual. I think after awhile she feels like it's part of her responsibility to him and that's why she continues the relationship even though she eventually tries to flee.
Jacklyn Anderson Well since Humbert told the story we'll never really know how she felt, except by the way Humbert said she cried herself to sleep every night. That doesn't sound like a girl who is in love?
From what ive understood it was from the dudes perspective not lolitas, and he sees her as a gorgeous girl that loves him back but in reality she’s miserable with him
+Noir Detective Nymphomania: It's a porn with a plot. Most porn with plot, messes the viewer up emotionally. It gives you emotional syphillis. Therefore SANE people return to movies with great storytelling on one hand and porn without any thoughtful plot on the other.
People badtalk the movie so much I was surprised at how good it was! Nice to see some people enjoying the movie, giving it a nice rating, but also pointing out some of its flaws. 😢
I hate you call this a “romance” - Children can’t consent- it’s not a romance it is a display of grooming and abuse. It’s vile and disgusting to glamorize child sexual abuse. Adults must be adults even the child says they want it. It’s sooo disgusting and extremely triggering.
heres my thoughts on the kubrick one. its paced a bit too slow and its run time of 150 min didnt help. i feel like the fact that films were under a lot of restriction then which hurt the movie in terms of adapting the book since it couldnt really express what the book conveyed as well.
I think it's a great movie. I mean the story is twisted, dark and deep. I like how they portray their characters. Honestly, Lolita is a little bitch if you ask me. But then again, they faced their own consequences at the very end.
Yeah all of these characters are pretty messed up, honestly. But Humbert was definitely the one that influenced Lolita in terrible ways if you ask me. I agree though, this movie is tough to watch but it's compelling nonetheless.
I always wanted to watch Lolita as it is the one Stanley Kubrick movie i have never seen. Based on your review, there appears to be two version's, the Stanley Kubrick version from 1962 and the version you have reviewed from 1997 ..having watched your review, i doubt i will watch either version. To me it is funny seeing WillFox.. with hair! ;D
So this is my thought on their feelings. I think they both had a strong attraction and chemistry to each other. What they had in common is that they were both subversive. He liked pampering her at first. And she also liked that he catered to her at first. They had a symbiotic relationship that attracted them to each other. An attraction that strong can border on love. Was it "real love"? Hard to say. I believe that he did fall more in love with her as time went on. And she fell more out of love with him as time went on, and began to resent him. She began using him more as time went on. However I still think there was still a fondness deep down for him. But she wanted to break free.
@@saratemp790 Unless her real father had already crossed boundaries. In the book, Lo has a poster in her bedroom, some kind of ad clipped out of a newspaper, and it has a man serving a woman coffee on a breakfast tray, in bed. Lo has added an arrow pointing at the man and "H.H." written next to it. Humbert, of course, assumes that those initials are supposed to stand for "Humbert Humbert", but they could also stand for "Harold Haze". -- Later, in the book, when they are on their first odyssey, staying in hotels and motels, Humbert will start to serve Lolita her morning coffee as well, except that he will require a sexual favor first before she actually gets it.
That's awesome! It's tough for me to say I'm in love with it because of the content, but it's very good. It's very dramatic, just tough to watch for me lol.
WillFoxification One of the things that I like the most (and at the same time is disturbing) is that I don’t hate Humbert🤷🏻♀️ idk its just strange hahaha i should hate him but the movie romanticizes it.
Yeah I definitely hated him, but I could see how you wouldn't. The movie is told from his perspective, and he romanticizes the story, when it really is only romantic from one side.
I'm not sure why people say they felt uncomfortable watching this film. It's pretty clear from the start that Lolita is far older than 12. She was 16/17 when this film was made and weakens the idea in your mind that this is a young child you're watching. They done her up well and made her look cute/innocent but the fact that she is allot older than 12 is still obvious wvery time you look at her. Had the character of really been a 12 year old girl then ofc, it would of been creepy to say the least.
Yeah but even if the actress is 16 it's still creepy to me because she's 16 and he's what like late 30's, early 40's? I can't remember off the top of my head, but it's still pretty awkward for me personally.
just finished the movie. i love how they made humbert really likable and smart. i see ppl saying, "why did they make the pdfile so likable? do they want you to like predetors?" like wat do you mean, this is how these ppl think. they're not trying to be evil, they think theyre doing something good in their head and its not wrong to "love who you love". its a great complex way to show, ya that shit is not harmless. you dont realise how much damage you're causing to you, the child and friends and family of you and her. the natural result to pdfilia is always ugly. and the movie shows that
I don't get it, how can a movie like that be made? I know they are pretending but wasn't the actress Dominique Swain 15 years old and the Jeremy Irons 48 years old when this movie was made? How do they get away with the kissing scenes?
Nice review. Just forgot the great soundtrack by Ennio Morricone...direction and photography are just sublime and sometimes astonishing....a wicked story anyhow
Thank you! Clare is a pretty terrible person IMO. I mean being a pedophile is never really excusable and his arrogance about the subject is pretty awful. The character is very well acted by Frank Langella though. I don't think he really stole Lo away though, she wanted to get away from Humbert. What did you think of him?
I don't think they really exposed his character enough, but I feel like Quilty and Humbert kind of have some sort of resemblance other the pedophilia type. In the movie at the end, he seemed very odd. I'm not sure why Humbert killed him; if he had done the same thing. The movie really is interesting but there are some parts to me that I feel that have missing gaps in between.
Andy Chavez Yeah I guess he killed him because he was so emotionally distraught over Lo that he just lost it. Yeah you're right though, Clare isn't in it all that much. They're not all that different no, Humbert just thinks they are.
It’s hard to describe without spoiling but it’s the origin of their “relationship” that is just the worst. He went to great lengths just to be near a child.
Sure. Nisa! In terms of content, I haven't seen many films or any really that touch on the same subjects. But if you head to my requested movie reviews playlist there's like 40 videos and a ton of them are very similar in style to Lolita. The requests that the viewers make here are always crazy and interesting!
Hahaha well I enjoyed lolita as a drama, but I can't deny that it's pretty tough to watch most of the time. If you check out my other reviews, there are definitely some crazy ones in there, like the japanese film "audition". Now that one is insane.
Dude you didn't even scratch the surface with this movie this movie has many many many layers it could take years just for a single person to fully understand what was going through all the characters Minds in this movie since they're all a bit psychotic and have unnormal Tendencies which causes them to think in irrational ways. Humbert is a creepy man with a fetish for little girls but that wasn't she only intention for the plot when the author wrote this story the actual story was really meant for the author to see if he could make the reader feel bad for Humbert and if he could make them feel bad for humbert that would result in the viewer wondering WHY they feel bad for such an awful person therefore resulting in them questioning their OWN sanity instead of Humbert's.
I saw this movie. It's interesting in the same way a car wreck with injured people is interesting. I also read the book which is one of the most perversely engrossing works of fiction I've ever read. The book is superior to the movie but, then again, that's usually how it works. I'm not alone in that opinion because it's considered one of the greatest novels written in English. There was an earlier movie based on the book which was shot in 1962. I saw it and regretted it. It's utter garbage and diverges significantly from the book.
lmao so true the 1997 version is definitely closer to the book which makes it all the more worse. because that book was a hard read to get through LOL but the 1962 tries to play it down a bit. they make Lolita seem like she's more 16/17. you don't see any kissing or touching so it's a lot easier to stomach
I'm sorry -- maybe it's just my age talking, but how in the heck does a guy in your profession NEVER have heard of Lolita? I still enjoyed your film synopsis, but I couldn't get over my initial WHATtf?
@@WillFoxification How sweet of you to reply. I'm 62, born in '59. I think it was because I like and respect your work that I commented. I've long been fascinated by the story of Lolita, & was just remarking that she no longer seemed a household name. Good luck to you -- you're going to make it big.
Let me get this clear. I know that at first, when the book had recently been released, (and then with the first movie too), people actually thought it was a love story. A romance. I could understand it, at different times, not a common topic people would talk about often or actual discussions about it in the media, so it could happen that people didn't see this story as something disturbing or wrong at all. I could get that. But I don't get that even after Vladimir Nobocov had interviews where he explained it wasn't a love story, and that Humbert was obviously sick, those who watch the movie or read the book still see it as a love story. 21st century guys, I'm sorry but I can't accept this.So first thing to bear in mind: the whole story is presented from Humbert's perspective. That means, some things may not be real, or at least not 100%. In the movie it's obvious with the clothes Dolores wears. Girls in those times didn't show much skin, especially at her age, so the outfits she wears in the movie may not have been like that. That's the first thing we see as a red flag, that makes us realize that what we are seeing is not an objective version of the story.Second thing, and the most important one. Dolores actively shows her desire for Humbert, while he is shown as the victim; a passive agent in this situation. He "falls'' for Dolores only because she acts seductively with the intention of making him fall for her. If you know the difference of ages but also that the one telling the story is Humbert, you have enough to doubt the veracity of Dolores' acts. With these two things I mentioned, it is obvious, OBVIOUS, that this can't be a love story, but a story of manipulation and pedophilia. I'm sick of reading reviews saying it is a "different form of love", or anything that suggests this is just the story of a couple. It isn't.
In the book, he's 37 to 42 -- it covers a 5 year span. In the 1997 movie, Humbert is 40, if we take his claim that he was 13 in 1922 at face value. As far as the 1962 movie is concerned, no age is given, but the actor was 53. The biggest age-related difference between the book and the movie is Lolita's age. It's explicitly stated as 12 when Humbert moves in, and she's still 12 when he jacks off on her and "almost 13" (i.e. 12) when they have full-blown intercourse for the first time. In both movies, the girls look much older than 12.
WillFoxification - Kubrick’s movie is more of a dramatic/dark comedy, and it stars James Mason, Peter Sellers, and Shelly Winters. I definitely recommend it.
We're watching from Humbert's perspective, the unreliable narrator. Imagine the actual horror that it is if we were watching it on Lolita's perspective.
I sure do! Sorry I should have mentioned that again in this video. I take requests from whoever wants to see a movie reviewed on this channel. I give you and your channel a shoutout in that video of the review. :) I have a list of about 12 or so movies to get to but I'll definitely take your request and add you to the list. What did you have in mind? Also thank you for stopping by and joining this channel, it means a lot to me!
Sounds good to me, man! I'll add it to my list. I'm excited to watch it because I've never heard of it. That seems to happen with most requests I get, they're usually movies I've never heard of that turn out to be really good.
WillFoxification no it’s not like that , so much. It is about a 14 yr old girl, what this movie was able to capture was how a lot of girls were in the 90s. I’m 39 so I don’t know how girls are today. It really brought me back to my first girlfriends, how more mature they were over me. I still depended on my parents in high school while some chicks were already on their own. I had girls that would sneak in my house but I never snuck out , I never would leave my house. That movie really got to me. The following day I was all grouchy, I felt like someone broke up w me.
First off how can you choose this remake over the Stanley Kubrick's Lolita? His version is a black comedy and I strongly suggest that you view it. Neither Nabokov's book or the Kubrick film has any sexually graphic scenes it also does not encourage anyone to embark on a relationship of this sort so grow up! It's a fact the many girls like older men..And to women's horror and anger, many men like girls.. They have laws to set guide lines but it doesn't change anything.. I saw this version and it made absolutely no impression on me. The original story is not about sex.. It was about obsession and calamitous situations that people suddenly find themselves in. The fictional Humbert is punished in the end.. What more do you want?
so, you never heard of Lolita before or ever seen the movie or read the book, you saw Jeremy Irons only in the fucking Batman movie, so what do you know?
Hey, I'm just a guy who saw the movie and provided my thoughts on it. I don't think you really need to read the book or follow Jeremy Irons career to provide your take on the film. I mean if this were "The Jeremy Irons Lifestory" movie, then maybe. Otherwise, nah :P
This movie really messed me up. Its very emotionally traumatizing...to me at least. I've watched it twice and every time I watch it I feel like I need to see a therapist lol. I LOVE this movie but I hate it.
Nicole Powers takes you to dark places
yeah, i completely can relate lol. that's exactly how I felt
Nicole Powers true it happened to me. I got really queasy around the scene when he begged her to tell him who was it. This really was a great movie
then it means the production did it right
It really takes a lot to make me uncomfortable because i watch a lot of gore and violent movies....but there's something about this movie that's so unsettling especially that scene with the banana..

Yeah the film definitely starts with her showing some obvious love for him, but as the story progresses it seems like she loves him less and less.

Nonsense
I feel unpleasant after the movie, I dun wanna watch it again but I love this movie so much tho

worth watching just for the beautful soundtrack.
Good point! Just prepare to be incredibly uncomfortable :P
Ennio Morricone is a legend
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the lack of a father figure in Lolita's life. She clearly uses her sexuality around older men to get the attention that she craves. I have had a number of (much older!) girlfriends that have exhibited some of the behaviours that Lolita portrayed. I thought the film was genius in this observation of a girl with so-called ''daddy issues''.
Very interesting. Did you feel like the girlfriends did this because they didn't have a father in the house growing up?
@@WillFoxification one had a father that died whilst she was young, one had no dad at all and one had a very incompetent dad that did drugs and alcohol etc. All three girls relatable to this character!!
Very interesting.
IT'S A TRAGEDY THAT MAKES ME WANT TO TAKE A BATH AFTERWARDS.
A moral and ethical bath?
WillFoxification Seeing it when it came out & as a young man I had to see the ending in order to know that "the monster" was killed & felt unsatisfied & disgusted with its ending. Thanks so much for the encouragement. Greatly appreciated!!
I just got done with "Lolita" and this a the first time that I'm watching this video because I wanted to go in blind and man I was blind 😂
I have to agree with you about how Lolita dressed is what Humbert wants to see, it's awesome that you pointed that out 👍
As I was watching "Lolita" I felt it's very simular to "The Collector" (1965) beautiful movie btw if you have not seen it
The ending was really bad in my opinion
But I'm still gonna give it 9/10 just like you because I really think it's a great movie 😊
And as always.....love your work 👏👏👏
Thanks, Christopher! I haven't had a chance to see the Collector yet, but now I feel like I definitely should! Yeah I think a 9/10 is pretty fair. It's a really odd movie, but I can't say it's not dramatic :P
"The Collector" (1965) is way more controversial then "Lolita"
"The Collector" (1965) was inspiration to many serial killers such as Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, Christopher Wilder and Robert Berdella
Now you may think "The Collector" (1965) is super fucked up movie but it's not.....let's just say different people see it in a different way....if you go in with a clear open mind....it's actually a beautiful love story gone wrong
Those serial killer took it the wrong way and ruined the reputation of the movie/book
Oh wow that's not good lol. Yeah maybe it's a bit too crazy for me then? :P
Very astute observations!
I literally just finished this movie like 10 minutes ago and it made me so uncomfortable and the ending was so confusing with the old guy playing the piano like what was even going on? The whole second half of the movie is honestly so confusing to me....
I think you would have to read the book to answer that.
I'm glad you like it as much as you do! It's pretty dramatic, albeit hard to watch!
Original better imo. This one has too much filler. No Peter sellers either.
How could Lolita love Humbert when she didn't even know him,?
I'm not sure, Mrs. Greene! I don't think she actually loved him. I think she had a crush in the beginning but thats about it!
She didn't. Its told from his perspective. A raper doesn't see himself as a raper. His perspective says Lolita makes the moves, but for real she doesn't love him. Correct me if I'm wrong

He was 14 in 1921 and the main story starts in 1947. That makes him 50, not 36...
Honestly that’s the only part I felt bad for him he was 14 in love with another girl his age and she died of an illness was the only part where I empathized with him I guess just a boy version of himself but definitely not the adult him...yikes no
Dang you can't add. If he was 14 in 1921, that means he was born 1907. 1947-1907=40.
It shows you that taboos are taboo for a reason.
based
I was so uncomfortable I had to quit watching it in the middle
Reasonable reaction to this film lol!
Oh man I recently watched this movie and I felt pretty empty. It's truly a cringeworthy movie, but it's good.
Yeah it's superrrrr cringe. It's just so tough to watch.
WillFoxification I can tell you're passionate about what you do! So I really hope it all works out man 😄
Definitely! Thanks so much for the support! :). Glad you enjoyed the film too.
I would like to correct that he isn't in love with her. He likes young girls and she caught his eye because she reminds him of his first girlfriend.
I think he loves her, just my opinion.
@@WillFoxification I mean... Do you go around abusing people you love? That's another really big reason I don't think he loved her.
I would recommend this book in a heartbeat as it will stick with you forever and being out all emotions within you.

i just finished this movie 10 minutes ago and want to know what people think. I love this movie, i love movies where i am compelled to "think". I love how beautiful the cinematography is, the music is amazing, and humbert's narrating voice is smooth that makes this movie almost.. poetic ?? some things i am still confused about :
1. how the mother really die in the beginning
2. what happen actually with dolores and quilty
3. toward the end is humbert losing his mind?
4. is he leaving her and respecting her decision to not follow him somehow a redemption for him?
5. in the movie lolita is the one that's making advances first, what does that tell us about humbert?
Good questions, but too long to answer.
Tbh I’ve never seen Lolita so thank you for describing it without taking 45 minutes!!
From what ive understood it was from the dudes perspective not lolitas, and he sees her as a gorgeous girl that loves him back but in reality she’s miserable with him

I hate you call this a “romance” - Children can’t consent- it’s not a romance it is a display of grooming and abuse. It’s vile and disgusting to glamorize child sexual abuse. Adults must be adults even the child says they want it. It’s sooo disgusting and extremely triggering.
No one is gonna talk about the foot fetich?
FOR REAL OMG..
heres my thoughts on the kubrick one. its paced a bit too slow and its run time of 150 min didnt help. i feel like the fact that films were under a lot of restriction then which hurt the movie in terms of adapting the book since it couldnt really express what the book conveyed as well.
Is the book better in your opinion?
I think it's a great movie. I mean the story is twisted, dark and deep. I like how they portray their characters. Honestly, Lolita is a little bitch if you ask me. But then again, they faced their own consequences at the very end.
Yeah all of these characters are pretty messed up, honestly. But Humbert was definitely the one that influenced Lolita in terrible ways if you ask me. I agree though, this movie is tough to watch but it's compelling nonetheless.

I don't think lolita saw him as a lover more like a dad with extra creepy stuff
Very possible. She used him to get things she wanted, as he did with her.
Nah, she made out with him, you don't do that to a dad.
@@saratemp790 Unless her real father had already crossed boundaries. In the book, Lo has a poster in her bedroom, some kind of ad clipped out of a newspaper, and it has a man serving a woman coffee on a breakfast tray, in bed.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but it's still pretty awkward for me personally.
the movie ofc is messed up but like its really beautifully made tbh better than the older one ngl
just finished the movie. i love how they made humbert really likable and smart. i see ppl saying, "why did they make the pdfile so likable? do they want you to like predetors?" like wat do you mean, this is how these ppl think. they're not trying to be evil, they think theyre doing something good in their head and its not wrong to "love who you love". its a great complex way to show, ya that shit is not harmless. you dont realise how much damage you're causing to you, the child and friends and family of you and her. the natural result to pdfilia is always ugly. and the movie shows that
I don't get it, how can a movie like that be made? I know they are pretending but wasn't the actress Dominique Swain 15 years old and the Jeremy Irons 48 years old when this movie was made? How do they get away with the kissing scenes?
not sure, it was a very different time, I guess.
The movie was told through his point of view so in real life it was probably completely different
Likely so!
Nice review. Just forgot the great soundtrack by Ennio Morricone...direction and photography are just sublime and sometimes astonishing....a wicked story anyhow
Great points! Yeah it's a very well done film overall.
I love this review , but although I wanted to know your view point on Clare Quilty ?
Just discovered what this movie was. i've never seen it and plan to keep it that way. too uncomfortable for me to watch in 2021.
Absolutely fair. It's not one I feel the need to re-watch lol

She's 12 in the book but in this movie she's actually 14!
Thanks for the info! Still creepy either way! :P
Oh wow! Yeah, this film is absolutely a train-wreck to watch, but it is well done. It's not one I'd want to watch again, but it's certainly well-made.
the 1962 film was easier to watch this one was cringe
Interesting. This one was pretty damn tough to watch :P so. The bar is set pretty low to be easier!
lmao so true the 1997 version is definitely closer to the book which makes it all the more worse. because that book was a hard read to get through LOL but the 1962 tries to play it down a bit. they make Lolita seem like she's more 16/17. you don't see any kissing or touching so it's a lot easier to stomach
Hahah yeahhh thats probably better to stomach for sure. This verison... you see almost everything. Not for the faint of heart.
I'm sorry -- maybe it's just my age talking, but how in the heck does a guy in your profession NEVER have heard of Lolita? I still enjoyed your film synopsis, but I couldn't get over my initial WHATtf?
I was born in 1991, never knew it existed sadly :P
It isn't.
That's not romance. That's being a PDF file.
agreed!
It’s not “romantic”.......
At all and I didn't even watch the movie. It was recommended but I'm ok with not watching it
Yep
Man in his late 30s? The dude was 40 in the book and movies.
Movie requests are getting intense lol
Hahah yes they are! We've had Tusk, Lolita, Under the Skin, a Clockwork Orange. You guys are definitely expanding my horizons lol.
this movie is wild bro
Can I get the names of more disturbing movies like Lolita, the dreamers and adore..I would really appreciate it
Hmmm I don't know many movies like Lolita, but you could check out my requested reviews playlist, I've reviewed some weird ones.
Hey Will did you know where i can find or read lolita novel .
Hmm I'm not sue honestly, Mia. I honestly don't read too many novels. Maybe audible?
Kubrick’s 1962 adaptation is a far superior movie.
Yeah? I may need to watch it, but I feel like one telling of this story is enough for me lol.
WillFoxification - Kubrick’s movie is more of a dramatic/dark comedy, and it stars James Mason, Peter Sellers, and Shelly Winters. I definitely recommend it.
No way. The 90's movie is almost exactly like the book. It is the book come to life.
@@saratemp790 - I said a better movie not necessarily more faithful adaptation.
She was also in face off
We're watching from Humbert's perspective, the unreliable narrator. Imagine the actual horror that it is if we were watching it on Lolita's perspective.
All is as now
Do you take movie requests? I'm new to your channel. I think you mentioned you do in your Under the Skin review.
+WillFoxification Oh I have so many. But in honor of the recent passing of Abbas Kiarostami I'll recommend my favorite film of his: Close-Up.
Sounds good to me, man! I'll add it to my list. I'm excited to watch it because I've never heard of it. That seems to happen with most requests I get, they're usually movies I've never heard of that turn out to be really good.
2020 anyone?
Me!
12? i thought she was 14
Everything I've seen about her indicates she is 12.
Watch Natasha 2017.
Oh wow, sounds like this movie really affected you!
WillFoxification yeah, that’s why I can’t tell if it was a good movie or not, and how good.
I think it was very good.
My all time fave novel but the film leaves so much out, esp the humour.
Having said that I had a huge crush on Dominique Swain growing up 😍😍😍
First off how can you choose this remake over the Stanley Kubrick's Lolita? His version is a black comedy and I strongly suggest that you view it. Neither Nabokov's book or the Kubrick film has any sexually graphic scenes it also does not encourage anyone to embark on a relationship of this sort so grow up!
It's a fact the many girls like older men..And to women's horror and anger, many men like girls.. They have laws to set guide lines but it doesn't change anything.. I saw this version and it made absolutely no impression on me. The original story is not about sex.. It was about obsession and calamitous situations that people suddenly find themselves in. The fictional
Humbert is punished in the end.. What more do you want?
Hmmmm no
This movie was obviously wrong and uncomfortable but it is still sad and beautiful in many ways! Also Dominique swain (aka lolita) is so beautiful 😍
Yeah this is probably the most uncomfortable viewing experience I've had. It's not one I'd rewatch, but I do think it's sad, dark, and entertaining!
Yes beautiful movie
so, you never heard of Lolita before or ever seen the movie or read the book, you saw Jeremy Irons only in the fucking Batman movie, so what do you know?
Hey, I'm just a guy who saw the movie and provided my thoughts on it. I don't think you really need to read the book or follow Jeremy Irons career to provide your take on the film. I mean if this were "The Jeremy Irons Lifestory" movie, then maybe. Otherwise, nah :P
@@WillFoxification i am glad you liked it though
