Ford F150 FX4 vs. Raptor - Why I Chose the FX4

  • Alright guys, I wanted to make a video discussing why I chose to buy a 2013 F150 FX4 rather than a first generation Ford Raptor. The Raptor is definitely an awesome truck that I wouldn't mind owning, but after two years I'm still happy with my purchase, so watch the video and check out why!

    This video makes perfect sense. Although I use my truck for work most days. My fx4 is plenty for me. The locking diff. & extra skid plates are GOLD. Unless you are a 4 wheel junkie, most Raptors, I believe, are overpriced, and underused. Man I gotta get to work...

    I agree also!
    2019 XLT Supercab FX4 with 3.0 PowerStroke
    4” ReadyLift + leveling, 33” Nitto’s on MotoMetal.
    20k under Raptor, better MPG (WAY!)
    And I get to pick my upgrades.
    Build or swap out parts as you go,
    -or-
    Just add water (cash) solution for Raptor.

    I love my FX4 and I've done the same as far as the leveling kit and tires. I also did the work myself like you. I've changed things around a couple of times and it is a pain. If I do anymore suspension work I'm going to pay someone, unless I build a garage with a garage with a lift, lol. Before I got the icon set up I had rough country struts and at the time they offered the struts only, no coil springs🙄. I bought a spring compressor kit at harbor freight and compressing those springs was nerve-racking to say the least. Never again. They offer the struts with the springs now, but I've got the icon Delta joint kit now like you, far superior. I've swapped my exhaust out and then a few other things, but there's always more,lol. Like I said I love my FX4, but if I had the money when I bought my truck I would have jumped on one of those raptors. I still want to get one and I'm actually going to be getting a truck sometime soon but I'm thinking an f150 or super duty would be more practical than a raptor, but it's a raptor 😁. I still love my FX4 and I'll never get rid of it though - 2006 and 260k and still going strong.

    I had a 2015 FX4 with a Coyote 5.0L and traded it for a 2013 Raptor with the 6.2L. Don't get me wrong, I loved my FX4 but this Raptor waaaayyyyy out performs my FX4. The first time I took the Raptor off road, it blew my mind! It did things my FX4 could never do. Plus it's a truck that I will never get rid of. It's a RAPTOR!!
    Btw, you can get a Gen 1 raptor for 30k-35k if you look hard enough and are patient. It also holds its value better, so if you go to sell it you won't lose much.
    Although the Raptor comes stock with everything you need to go out and play, you can now purchase plenty of options and add on's to make your Raptor your own.
    I did love the 5.0 Coyote but the 6.2 has more horse power and the thing has a proven track record of being pretty much bullet proof. Most of them will last well over 300,000 miles.
    You also mentioned that the Raptor is wider. Yes it is, about 7 inches wider but my Raptor actually has a better turning radius than my FX4 did and if you have a problem parking a Raptor then maybe you shouldn't be driving a truck. Just saying...
    I think I hit most of your reasons for buying an FX4 over a Raptor, obviously I DO NOT agree. I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I didn't even mention your gas monkey t-shirt. Lol.
    Have a nice day.

      Deep down I know I’d want a raptor too, it just doesn’t make the logical sense for me, at least not right now. I kept holding out for them to put a V8 back in a raptor, but since they aren’t gonna do that then I may have to start looking at them again. That being said, I don’t live somewhere with good off road accessibility, so I think that’s why I’ve held off getting one or building my truck up anymore than I already have.

    I was in the same dilemma, when I bought my truck, I really liked the Raptors, and at the time (pre 2015) Ford still offered the 6.2L in the F-150, my ideal configuration was a 4X4 Super Cab with the 6.5 foot bed and a 6.2L V8, but alas, the 6.2L couldn't really be configured into the truck I wanted, which put me in a 5.0L (which I love btw). But I probably would have sprung for a Raptor if I could have got it with the 6.5 foot bed instead of crappy little 5.5ft bed, it also didn't help at all that they weren't offering any rebates or anything on Raptors, you basically were going to pay sticker for one, I ordered my FX4 from the factory to my specific spec which stickered at 40K, but I drove it home for 27K and 0% interest brand new after trade in, down payment and some haggling, so financially it was also wiser to go for the FX4.

    • @freakfiveoh
      @freakfiveoh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still think about trading up for one, but I had similar thoughts when I still had my 2014 Mustang. It's hard to pay a lot of extra money when day to day you're just going to sit in the same interior.

    I got the same truck but 2014 with similar suspension and wheels upgrades.You forgot to mention that 99% of Raptor owners will never use it for what it was built for, so yes , saving money buying the FX4 makes sense.

    • @freakfiveoh
      @freakfiveoh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing major, all I’ve had to do is basic maintenance, and I did have a small part break inside the dash (likely from an AC duct) and get stuck in the blower motor, but that was a 10 minute fix and everything else had been good. The SYNC system has little glitches from time to time, but that’s to be expected as electronics age.

      @@freakfiveoh I like the ram don't get me wrong. Strong v8 best mileage I've had was 20 mpg at 70. It's just I saw the new motors from Ford and chevy and I fell in love with them lol. Plus I'm about to retire from the military in 18 months. My wife said when I retire I could have a mustang gt. Only problem is I prefer sitting higher off the road and my knees can't tolerate getting in a low vehicle anymore. So I asked if I could get a new truck instead. So now I'm looking at trucks again. Unfortunately for me I now keep looking at f150 as opposed to a 3/4 ton truck lol.

      Yes, there are FX4s with 6ft beds. The FX4 differs in a few ways from a regular 4x4. It comes equipped with different shocks and struts, has skid plates for the oil pan, transfer case and gas tank, and it has off road tech such as hill descent control etc. Also, it's not an appearance package, it's an off road package with appearance upgrades.
