But here's my jist; I'm working on my 6th Heart attack and came to the conclusion that I'd rather die out in the woods doing something I love to do then die sitting on the front porch of a nursing home, drooling out of my mouth, pooping and peeing in a bag while I'm watching cartoons. I had one too. I had a clot a couple months ago. So that scares me too. Due to my geadmother getting alot of them in her legs I should a been taking 81s a day I didn't lsitennto my mom. I am real young so they couldn't understand why I ahd one I don't drink or do drugs or eat real bad. So they couldn't explainnitnn found it odd. I do smoke but not alot and I started at a later age. Thats all I do. It wasn't the cigs. It wasn't until I left the hospital my parents told me the family history on both sides n it shocked me. I never did any damage to my heart but I do have to take meds for a while until whenni don't know n I do have to always take an 81 asparin a day no matter what. When my grandma would get a clot she new it was hot and she felt a lump she would take an asparin n it would break up. It was pretty scary kinda painful n got worse as I got closer to the other hospital. I did joke all the way there. But I had warnings long before that night n I did tell my Dr n no one ever thought ie as in cardiac arrest all that time. They even checked my blood pressure n nothing. Anyhow I am OK but I worry. But I live in a very shitty building where they do unpk4adant things n I am already breathing that in n thsts worse than doing it. So why am I even here. I might as well be livibg my best life and thats living like this. I am tryin to get my truck repaired n build a camper some place as I'm picky n I got a pic in my head of what suits me better. Plus it's cheaper. Lol I am about to do this soon as I got a truck in my hands again. But if I live my life worrying then that's not living at all. My dad said ehen ny dog got hit n I taught it to walk n fed it by finger. When she got better he said if you stop a dog from being a dog cuz u think it might die snap it's neck walking on a leash by pulling then hows that dog living..I might as well have put her down. He was right. Thats so life for a dog staying inside a hosue not letting it play run or eat on a leash. She lived another 18 yrs. So why would I live that way. You need ro live like its your last day everyday. You will regret it if you don't. My dad did. So live your dreams now well you still have that time. ❤
CAA and have one of those scanner things that you can text in to get help. Always have a cell u can call 91q on any cell that isn't on a plan. You can get internet that gets signal everyplace then u can use your cell. Have a power bank thats only for emergencies n heat if u have no power. Me I wouldn't be too far from a town but enough I could enjoy off grid in winter just incase. But I would try n have all the things I needed incase something happened n always let soemone know where u are n make contact daily if u have a history of health issues or just because.. choking would scare me. I do carry an epi pen for black bees. But the whole choking thing freaks me out. Being alone would be freaky. Gotta eat slow n smaller pieces. Shit thsts scary about your gf. Omg id floor it. I do have car but it's old training l. You can teach yourself how to bang it out n car is different now. Its not the dame for choking now. God conversation but your rifht the dame things can happen in a home. Whennits your time it's your time I suppose. Just be safe n be careful your do right. We are not untouchable. I wish I could tell my son that n he'd hear me. I guess I grew up untouchables and I made rhem have no fear too. But I forgot to teach them to always think just incase. What if. But i never did n sometimes thst boy scares me. Lol i gots a chainsaw fk the axe lol hahaha
My daughter went from a 5500 Ram AEV built rig, with a camper to a e chassis cut away with a custom box body, so she can always have access to driver seat and get away. she sold the ram at peak of shortage and desire for vehicle, and put money down on an rv park that closed last year in her home town she is converting to be a tinyhouse community for her overland and off road friends/fellow van lifers in her spheres. Shes trying to help folks offset rising housing cost as well.

Another VI native - ya, Long Beach is awesome, but so are the beaches off the Comox Valley. And, there are great summer accessible hiking trails around the ski hill. The views are killer.

I've been fulltiming in a truck camper for three years. I always stay on public land in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Nevada or other similar areas. Never had a problem. I also tow a 24' enclosed trailer with a SxS, a quad and a motorcycle in it... plus lots of tools and supplies so I'm almost completely self-sufficient. I've never had the "knock on my door" either. I have 700 watts of solar and 400 AH of lithium ion battery power so I never need my generator unless it gets hot enough to need the AC. I carry extra water in the trailer so I can generally go two weeks or more on water, which includes daily showers, dish washing, etc... and I can go into super conservation if needed. I thought about starting a channel about it, but decided it was way too much work.
My wonderful Scottish Grandpa migrated to Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Calvary in the Western Canadian Rockies in the early 1900's. He camped in extremely remote areas and said he was not afraid of rattlers, bear or mtn lions. He was most afraid of moose. "They would chase a man for as long as it took then stomp him to death," he said. I've always kept moose a respectful distance when camping.
Used to have an old guy at work tell me about the dangers of moose and I never believed him until I was chased by one after I crossed paths on a trail at work, respect the moose 🫎
Garmin Inreach is the best emergency option for extreme off grid, best 10.95 a month a person can get. Have had a few friends in Alaska saved with it before when things turned bad fast.
Thank you for being honest and keeping it real. It’s good to share these things with people. It’s all too easy to form an unrealistic idealistic picture if only the highlights are presented. My husband worked away in camp when my children were little. I sometimes used to worry about the choking thing too. I determined that paying attention and chewing each bite carefully and mindfully would be the best prevention. That meant eliminating distractions while eating and focusing on the food. The children are all grown up now but it wouldn’t hurt to get back into that habit. 🤔 Also, you might want to consider keeping some Benadryl capsules in your first aid kit. Not as effective as an Epi-pen but better than nothing in case of a surprise allergic reaction. Just don’t plan on driving after you take it. And NEVER drink alcohol with it.
We used to have a 10.5 foot Bigfoot camper, I loved it, but the scissor stairs always caused me anxiety. That and not having access to the cab to be able to drive away without having to go outside if we felt threatened by someone or something. We now have a Motorhome and we aren’t afraid to take it on the forest roads so both those fears have been appeased. I do miss the Bigfoot, it was an awesome camper.

We’re a couple of retirees in a van. Currently driving South America in Chile, our 14th country. No robberies thefts threats crooked cops or anything more serious than loud music and barking dogs. I don’t spend a lot of time worrying. and a lot more time paying attention. And the scenery is stunning.
What terrify most when i camp on my truck in the woods. Is when i start hearing rock knocking, and sound 'woop', and some whistling behind trees. That time i set ready on my menstopper bandog,and some of my south east asia king cobra venom crossbow arrow. Theres nothing not even towering cryptid that didnt drop after being stung by king cobra venom

Your absolutely right. I've live alone for more than half my life. I've always believed that if I'm gonna die I'd rather it be while I was out living my best life! Choking can happen anywhere! I choked over a drink at my favorite restaurant last week, it was minor and was able to quickly recover from that, but it made me realize again that I can choke at home alone, and I would just need to do what I think is necessary to recover quickly. But if I don't for some reason, I know that I have lived my best life and it truly has been a great journey, in spite of some of the downs, there were way more ups than downs and who can complain about that?!! 😊 Like is too short to get caught up in all the 'what if's' and just do your best to be prepared and stay safe! I got a 360 degree camera and blink cameras so I can record and know what’s moving around my rig. However I’m gonna stay in campgrounds at least the first year or so. As a solo Rv woman I am cautious but I will be prepared to handle 4 legged and 2 legged creatures that want to cause me harm. I’m more worried about humans many states are open carry….not that stops criminals.
I once heard the best way to un choke yourself if you’re alone is just to do a belly flop on the floor haha. Of course I’m no doctor, also, I carry two EpiPens with me in case someone else has a reaction, but in general Benadryl will resolve the issue, especially the liquid stuff. If it’s pills, chew them up. It’s gross, but it will react sooner. Stay safe bud!

My fear with having a truck camper is the fact that you are stuck in the camper and have no way to leave if you need to. Say there's a psycho outside that wants to do you harm, theres no way to get into the drivers seat and start the truck and get the hell out of dodge.....That would be my biggest fear being out in the middle of no where...
Kevin I would recommend that you have a satellite communication device you carry on your self or use an iPhone with the satellite communication device I think iPhone 14 and higher. I enjoy your your channel.
My biggest fears when truck camping were getting out of the camper at night to get something from the cab of the truck, and the thought of an accident wrecking my vehichle/home
I hate going outside in the dark no matter where I’m living, big fear when I was younger living on the acerage and starting my truck at 5am soooooo dark and creepy
For me, this lifestyle is about being in a prepper mind / survivalist on a daily basis, meaning you dont rely on other to live and or survive. Some exemple you already apply is having 2 heating system, propane and diesel heater and having multiple battery charging option, system redoundancy is critical. Sure thing having a first aid kit rated for remote area with for example several epipen will be a must. If you alway stay in Canada, securely carrying a shotgun within the applicable law restriction will be a universal rodent/critter/wildlife convicer. Carrying water or water filtration system and food for at least a week more of your planified trip. Being alone increase some risk for sure. Getting an extended health survey on private sector each year is a good idea. In the end, ist just getting Maslow basis cover, extended medical knowledge and risk management.
Totally agree with you Kevin about any medical emergencies we might encounter in our lifes. But at same time. We can’t forget to live and enjoy ourselves. We only live once and have to live it to the fullest! And if I ever run out of coffee. That would be the end of it all!!!😉
Been watching you for a few months now. Love your locations, making me want to go explore the Island. This is a good topic. Being a older lady I have camped by myself and a few things have happened to me. Once I was parked down a FSR not to far off the main highway. There was a small river that a 4×4 could cross making the highway a 15 minute drive. It's not a road most people would drive down, you kinda got to know its there. For me I have to go the long way around to get to this spot, its about 40 minutes, I own a motorhome, so no crossing rivers. One night at around 1 in the morning a 4×4 truck came across that river. Was not expecting that. It woke me up. They stopped right at my camp and sat there for about 5 minutes. My heart was pounding and I was scared. I have no defense and not sure what these people were thinking. They eventually left and I prayed they would be going the long way out. But no, about a hour or so later they came back. They didn't stop but continued on crossing back over the river. After, I told some friends about this encounter one gave me a air pistol and then i got some bear spray. I always park were I can leave if I have to. I do fear people coming into my camp, being a older female camping alone you need to give the impression your not alone. You have to be careful about camping in the bush because there are some crazy people out there. Still, I love the solitude, nothing beats the peace and quiet, and the beauty of nature.

One doesn't need to dwell on the "what if situations" but one does need to have a plan for those situation & have it mapped out & practised in one's mind. Failure to do so may be failure to survive.
We spend the winters in the south western US in our truck camper and have never felt unsafe. We've stayed in many Walmarts and Cracker Barrels and had zero issues. Having said that, we use our discernment and pass up some places that could be sketchy.
I was weeding my unruly garden yesterday and disturbed a big lizard until its leg appeared. I feared a snake, but it was just a " blue tongued lizard," harmless.😅You live in a very beautiful 19:35 country. It's wonderful to see. Sometimes wild animals are less dangerous than some humans.🎉😊❤
Before my truck camper I had a topper. I was sleeping in the back when someone tried opening my truck door. Luckily, when I yelled, hey, they took off. I have a bow with an arrow ready to go along with bear spray. I was out in the boonies on a turn off on a paved road. I have learned to camp off forest service roads or a business with cameras.
Western Canada always felt pretty safe to me the half dozen times I've driven through going to Alaska and back. Except for the time I had to drive a tour bus through Vancouver when working for the Olympics, their street lanes are so narrow!
You are so correct on everything you said, I am prepared for just about any situation because I like boondocking more than anything and like you, I am a solo traveler. The most scared I have ever been was when I experienced something that I still don’t know what it was but I don’t think it was human. I will never forget that night but other than that it has been ok for me. Maybe traveling with a buddy would definitely lessen or eliminate much of the risks.
Lived in different places in BC for the last 48 years all out in the forest or rural. Seen lots of bears. Had 9 cross the farm last summer and in all the time only had bears huff at us twice. Mostly because the bear was startled. Respect your rural environment and it’s residence. Momma moose are way scarier, next to people in the city
I live in BC and bear spray was probably the first purchase I made after going fulltime in '22, haven't had to use it yet, possibly because I just talk to the potential bears and let them know what's up.
One thing a lot folks need keep in mind, if you have health insurance in the USA not all plans are accepted once you leave your state, so look into travels health insurance that will cover all of em, you'll need look into health insurance that cover you outside the USA. ...Otherwise you can end up with a big medical bill if you get ill or end up in the hospital not covered.
Just found you, but you're adorable with such a wonderful and funny personality. Bears and Moose are very scary, but Cougars creep me out the most. Maybe because where I live in the mountains of N. California we have a lot of them. In fact earlier this year my friend up here had 2 brothers that she knew (in their late teens) in Placerville area that were attacked. And one of the brothers was killed by this Cougar. The boys were hunting in their local woods by their home for dropped antlers and the cat stalked and attacked them. So sad. Stay safe out there. I think what would scare me the most besides wildlife and people, is breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

If I was alone in my van and got a knock at 2 or 3 in the morning or any time for that matter, and I didn't see anything that looked like an official vehicle, I would definitely let that person know that someone was in there because likely that's going to scare them off. if you pretend like you're not in the van, they're going to try to break in if that's their intention. I have not figured out why van lifers decide to whisper and stay super quiet when they hear someone outside their van. If their intention is to rob you then they're trying to break in to an empty vehicle, they're likely not going to stand around trying to break in if they know someone is in there. let them know you're in there and if you need to let them know you're armed
My risk assessment when remote camping and no cell service. Be as prepared as you can be for whatever might happen and deal with it as best you can. As an older lady who remote camps by myself the last 18 years. Always carry a good emergency pack when hiking. 1) Falling and badly injuring myself. If I gotta crawl out 5 or 10 kilometers that's what I'll do, and hope I don't become lunch for a hungry bear or cat. 2) Having an accident and going over a steep embankment or cliff. 3) Medical emergency such as heart attack, low sugar, etc. take care of your health out there, in general whether in town or out in wilderness. First aid training helps. 4) Crazy bad people. Be ready to defend yourself, not just physically, but mentally, practice in your head different scenarios and how to deal with them in whatever situation it is, then if something does happen you're better prepared to de-escalate or fight back or run. 5) Wild cats, because they can stalk you from above, especially when hiking mountain trails. 6) Bears, especially mamas with cubs. I feel safer camping remote than parking overnight downtown in a large city. Even so. One time I was camped in a campground, facing inward, deep in the trees. Was sitting in my truck when a car with 4 young guys came and parked right behind me, blocking me, they all got out and walked through my camp to the river. Locked my doors and got my weapons handy. Watched to see what they would do, but they just looked at the river and then they left. You never know. Then I went and parked somewhere else for the night, did NOT feel comfortable staying there when they knew I was there, and keeping an eye out for that vehicle. Since then I always park facing outward and try to leave enough room that they can't block my vehicle in without having to ram them too much and disabling my vehicle if it came to that. I live in a big city and overall risks are the same, though in the city human predators are dangerous. Even in a place full of people, there are risks because these days that doesn't stop some human predators. Get some self-defense training. That being said, I am very careful and cautious when alone out in the backcountry, as well as in the city, but I love the backcountry and if something happens to me out there, no better way to go out than being where I love most and doing what I love most.
If you are travelling in the north in the winter....at least have a way of starting a fire , if your vehicle brakes down..35 below is the same inside your car as outside....you should also have a proper winter coat...dont leave the city for a 4 hr road trip with just a sweater on ...take fire starter...and a heavy winter coat...even if its dirty..you wont care if your car shuts down.....more than food its important...you can probably go 2 weeks without food....you will freeze to death overnight.....If you are on a road , someone will come along the next day....unless you are out in the middle of nowhere...in that case you should be prepared with food and water......As for the health ..take your prescribed pills with you...and the rest is a gamble we all take
So much to say on this. I’ve only ever had one actual person related event, I was boondocking, in July, on the road to Telegraph Cove, Vancouver Island, a car came roaring up the dirt road, lights on high beam with roof top spot lights on, It wasn’t until they were right beside the van that I could see it was RCMP. Scared the cr@p out of me. Turned out they were looking for someone. I asked if I should leave, was he dangerous, they said no, so I stayed, very unsettled night. I’ve had tons of bear encounters. I’ve also had to do the Heimlich maneuver on someone, but it wasn’t RV/camping related. 😊
Other notes on the beasties in the woods: they can hear, see, and smell, you LONG before you are aware they are there. However, you can occassionally surprise/startle a bear (usually, but other large wild animals as well) so, yes, carry something that makes an unfamiliar noise and use it as you walk. So snacks should be low oder. Also a good idea to tie a bell to a leg or an arm to let the beasties know you are coming. You only want to see a wild animal from a VERY respectful distance. If you come onto a fresh kill, back away carefully and quickly. Stay alert. Leave the little kids at home with their grandparents - much safer there. AND, probably not a great idea to take your small, yappy dog on a walk in the wild places. A cougar or a bear would see your little jewel as a handy snack. If you do take a bigger dog, keep them safely on a leash. And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE that bear begging for snacks at the side of the road often does not know the difference between your precious child and an offered snack. You, and your kids will have a better experience through the car window. Notes from the wild places.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, in the deep south, we worry about snakes , alligators, and heat stroke. Common denominator would be the two leged varmints.
I'm less afraid in my trailer in the woods at night than I am in a house during the day/night in the city. Mostly because we have crazy neighbours and you never know what people are capable of. I've watched too many horror neighbour stories lol.
I've had encounters with pretty feral range cattle camping west of rocky. But I had my 30 30 win. with me. Always had that just in case. 1976 was the year that happened. I remember a young fella came jogging into our camp, he had just few in from Germany. We were camped at the end of this gravel road towards jackfish lake. He asked me where is the road ? and I told him that's the end of it the rest is all bush. We'll he was totally shocked he's never seen a road come to a end before. I laughed pretty hard. I let him shoot my rifle a few times he was totally in bliss.
There's would be the ??? 60 inch cab to axle ?? I opted for the 84 " cab to axle. There was a guy a few years ago doing truck camping on the island . I have forgot his name.
Things to think about I agree no need to be scared of life situational awareness is very important you should not bury your face in the phone all the time that could kill you did you think about buying a shotgun and if so can you carry it around when you hike?
I’ve thought about it but for the most part bear spray is enough, don’t know if I’d want to lug that around on a hike also. National parks you definitely cannot carry that lol
2 yrs now full time in my truck camper. Zero problems , never had a midnight knock to move , never been anywhere I've been fearful for. Should of done this yrs ago
I made up a 7ft spear to hike with after my 60lb dog got bitten on the butt a few times by some very hungry coyotes. Mostly puncture wounds and a few L shaped rips in his hide he looked at me as if to say those dogs are jerks! I ran into the brush with a 3in lockblade and chased them off. A good spear increases your confidence level that's for sure.
My biggest fear exploring the outdoors is getting accidentally injured and having to make my way out. Predators are a distant risk for me after having had 6 bear encounters and 3 cougar encounters, all being resolved safely.
My wife and I were stalked by a grizzly bear while hiking in Wells Grey Provincial Park. I have some pretty bad arthritis and peripheral neuropathy but my adrenaline kicked in big time and I could almost run. At several points we could see him about three feet away just off the bushes stalking us. I had already told my wife that if it came at us, she was to wait till i made sure it went after me and then she was to run away and don't look back. Only a couple other times in my life that I seriously thought I was gonna die and this one or two
I live in Ladysmith. My daughter and I went for a drive last night and grabbed a milkshake and parked in the Save On Foods parking lot while we drank them. A white pickup that had a big camper on it pulled up and parked in front of us. For a minute I thought it might be you as the rig looked so much like yours haha I told my daughter that I wonder if it was you as I remember you being here on the island. Guy got out and sort of looked like you too. Couldn't see too well as it was dark out. I went to your channel and was comparing your rig and his. Although very similar it wasn't you. If it was yours I would have said hi when you went back to your truck. Although knowing me I would have chickened out lol

Hello Kevin how are you today I am going to Alaska about two from Anchorage in 2026 and a friend of mine told me there is tons of black bears and Grizzlies Brown and wolves so I said oh great but I always wanted to go there for a month to see the Beautiful mountains I was thinking of driving there but it would take me for + days to get there
Hey Kevin, glad to see your doing well, If I could make a suggestion it would be to get some kind of a pew pew if you know what I mean, a pump action stored safely with a lock. if you dont have a license you can get a decent cross bow which is better than nothing and would do the trick with a well placed shot, would also give a guy more peace of mind. Well I would recommend a 10 mil and a 12 g pump with 3 inch slugs. But he's in Canada where their ruler declared that Canadian Citizens don't have a right to defend yourself. But very least 12 g with slugs.
People are always the biggest threat but it’s actually a minor threat. Any establishment at night is probably the biggest threat. The more remote generally the safer you are. I’m prepared for the medical aspect obviously 😂. In the US we have pew pews 😊 stay safe 👍🏼
If you’re living in a camper in the city… vs out in the hills… I bet your mental health and overall clarity would be way off. That being said, you should definitely have a short barrel 12 gauge in the camper at all times.

I had one too. I had a clot a couple months ago. So that scares me too. Due to my geadmother getting alot of them in her legs I should a been taking 81s a day I didn't lsitennto my mom. I am real young so they couldn't understand why I ahd one I don't drink or do drugs or eat real bad. So they couldn't explainnitnn found it odd. I do smoke but not alot and I started at a later age. Thats all I do. It wasn't the cigs. It wasn't until I left the hospital my parents told me the family history on both sides n it shocked me. I never did any damage to my heart but I do have to take meds for a while until whenni don't know n I do have to always take an 81 asparin a day no matter what. When my grandma would get a clot she new it was hot and she felt a lump she would take an asparin n it would break up. It was pretty scary kinda painful n got worse as I got closer to the other hospital. I did joke all the way there. But I had warnings long before that night n I did tell my Dr n no one ever thought ie as in cardiac arrest all that time. They even checked my blood pressure n nothing. Anyhow I am OK but I worry. But I live in a very shitty building where they do unpk4adant things n I am already breathing that in n thsts worse than doing it. So why am I even here. I might as well be livibg my best life and thats living like this. I am tryin to get my truck repaired n build a camper some place as I'm picky n I got a pic in my head of what suits me better. Plus it's cheaper. Lol I am about to do this soon as I got a truck in my hands again. But if I live my life worrying then that's not living at all. My dad said ehen ny dog got hit n I taught it to walk n fed it by finger. When she got better he said if you stop a dog from being a dog cuz u think it might die snap it's neck walking on a leash by pulling then hows that dog living..I might as well have put her down. He was right. Thats so life for a dog staying inside a hosue not letting it play run or eat on a leash. She lived another 18 yrs. So why would I live that way. You need ro live like its your last day everyday. You will regret it if you don't. My dad did. So live your dreams now well you still have that time. ❤
CAA and have one of those scanner things that you can text in to get help. Always have a cell u can call 91q on any cell that isn't on a plan. You can get internet that gets signal everyplace then u can use your cell. Have a power bank thats only for emergencies n heat if u have no power. Me I wouldn't be too far from a town but enough I could enjoy off grid in winter just incase. But I would try n have all the things I needed incase something happened n always let soemone know where u are n make contact daily if u have a history of health issues or just because.. choking would scare me. I do carry an epi pen for black bees. But the whole choking thing freaks me out. Being alone would be freaky. Gotta eat slow n smaller pieces. Shit thsts scary about your gf. Omg id floor it. I do have car but it's old training l. You can teach yourself how to bang it out n car is different now. Its not the dame for choking now. God conversation but your rifht the dame things can happen in a home. Whennits your time it's your time I suppose. Just be safe n be careful your do right. We are not untouchable. I wish I could tell my son that n he'd hear me. I guess I grew up untouchables and I made rhem have no fear too. But I forgot to teach them to always think just incase. What if. But i never did n sometimes thst boy scares me. Lol i gots a chainsaw fk the axe lol hahaha
My daughter went from a 5500 Ram AEV built rig, with a camper to a e chassis cut away with a custom box body, so she can always have access to driver seat and get away. she sold the ram at peak of shortage and desire for vehicle, and put money down on an rv park that closed last year in her home town she is converting to be a tinyhouse community for her overland and off road friends/fellow van lifers in her spheres. Shes trying to help folks offset rising housing cost as well.

I've been fulltiming in a truck camper for three years. I always stay on public land in Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Nevada or other similar areas. Never had a problem. I also tow a 24' enclosed trailer with a SxS, a quad and a motorcycle in it... plus lots of tools and supplies so I'm almost completely self-sufficient. I've never had the "knock on my door" either. I have 700 watts of solar and 400 AH of lithium ion battery power so I never need my generator unless it gets hot enough to need the AC. I carry extra water in the trailer so I can generally go two weeks or more on water, which includes daily showers, dish washing, etc... and I can go into super conservation if needed. I thought about starting a channel about it, but decided it was way too much work.
Here in the US we have a newer devise for choking it's called Lifevac it's a plunger device. Might be something you/people should invest in.

My wonderful Scottish Grandpa migrated to Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Calvary in the Western Canadian Rockies in the early 1900's. He camped in extremely remote areas and said he was not afraid of rattlers, bear or mtn lions. He was most afraid of moose. "They would chase a man for as long as it took then stomp him to death," he said.
I've always kept moose a respectful distance when camping.
Used to have an old guy at work tell me about the dangers of moose and I never believed him until I was chased by one after I crossed paths on a trail at work, respect the moose 🫎
It's hard to beat the peace and solitude of the wilderness.
Garmin Inreach is the best emergency option for extreme off grid, best 10.95 a month a person can get. Have had a few friends in Alaska saved with it before when things turned bad fast.
Thank you for being honest and keeping it real. It’s good to share these things with people. It’s all too easy to form an unrealistic idealistic picture if only the highlights are presented.
My husband worked away in camp when my children were little. I sometimes used to worry about the choking thing too. I determined that paying attention and chewing each bite carefully and mindfully would be the best prevention. That meant eliminating distractions while eating and focusing on the food. The children are all grown up now but it wouldn’t hurt to get back into that habit. 🤔
Also, you might want to consider keeping some Benadryl capsules in your first aid kit. Not as effective as an Epi-pen but better than nothing in case of a surprise allergic reaction. Just don’t plan on driving after you take it. And NEVER drink alcohol with it.
We used to have a 10.5 foot Bigfoot camper, I loved it, but the scissor stairs always caused me anxiety. That and not having access to the cab to be able to drive away without having to go outside if we felt threatened by someone or something. We now have a Motorhome and we aren’t afraid to take it on the forest roads so both those fears have been appeased. I do miss the Bigfoot, it was an awesome camper.

We’re a couple of retirees in a van. Currently driving South America in Chile, our 14th country. No robberies thefts threats crooked cops or anything more serious than loud music and barking dogs. I don’t spend a lot of time worrying. and a lot more time paying attention. And the scenery is stunning.

What terrify most when i camp on my truck in the woods. Is when i start hearing rock knocking, and sound 'woop', and some whistling behind trees. That time i set ready on my menstopper bandog,and some of my south east asia king cobra venom crossbow arrow. Theres nothing not even towering cryptid that didnt drop after being stung by king cobra venom

Your absolutely right. I've live alone for more than half my life. I've always believed that if I'm gonna die I'd rather it be while I was out living my best life! Choking can happen anywhere! I choked over a drink at my favorite restaurant last week, it was minor and was able to quickly recover from that, but it made me realize again that I can choke at home alone, and I would just need to do what I think is necessary to recover quickly. But if I don't for some reason, I know that I have lived my best life and it truly has been a great journey, in spite of some of the downs, there were way more ups than downs and who can complain about that?!! 😊 Like is too short to get caught up in all the 'what if's' and just do your best to be prepared and stay safe! I got a 360 degree camera and blink cameras so I can record and know what’s moving around my rig. However I’m gonna stay in campgrounds at least the first year or so. As a solo Rv woman I am cautious but I will be prepared to handle 4 legged and 2 legged creatures that want to cause me harm. I’m more worried about humans many states are open carry….not that stops criminals.
I once heard the best way to un choke yourself if you’re alone is just to do a belly flop on the floor haha. Of course I’m no doctor, also, I carry two EpiPens with me in case someone else has a reaction, but in general Benadryl will resolve the issue, especially the liquid stuff. If it’s pills, chew them up. It’s gross, but it will react sooner. Stay safe bud!

My fear with having a truck camper is the fact that you are stuck in the camper and have no way to leave if you need to. Say there's a psycho outside that wants to do you harm, theres no way to get into the drivers seat and start the truck and get the hell out of dodge.....That would be my biggest fear being out in the middle of no where...
Kevin I would recommend that you have a satellite communication device you carry on your self or use an iPhone with the satellite communication device I think iPhone 14 and higher. I enjoy your your channel.

My biggest fears when truck camping were getting out of the camper at night to get something from the cab of the truck, and the thought of an accident wrecking my vehichle/home

For me, this lifestyle is about being in a prepper mind / survivalist on a daily basis, meaning you dont rely on other to live and or survive. Some exemple you already apply is having 2 heating system, propane and diesel heater and having multiple battery charging option, system redoundancy is critical. Sure thing having a first aid kit rated for remote area with for example several epipen will be a must. If you alway stay in Canada, securely carrying a shotgun within the applicable law restriction will be a universal rodent/critter/wildlife convicer. Carrying water or water filtration system and food for at least a week more of your planified trip. Being alone increase some risk for sure. Getting an extended health survey on private sector each year is a good idea. In the end, ist just getting Maslow basis cover, extended medical knowledge and risk management.
Totally agree with you Kevin about any medical emergencies we might encounter in our lifes.
But at same time. We can’t forget to live and enjoy ourselves.
We only live once and have to live it to the fullest!

This is a good topic. Being a older lady I have camped by myself and a few things have happened to me.
Once I was parked down a FSR not to far off the main highway. There was a small river that a 4×4 could cross making the highway a 15 minute drive. It's not a road most people would drive down, you kinda got to know its there. For me I have to go the long way around to get to this spot, its about 40 minutes, I own a motorhome, so no crossing rivers. One night at around 1 in the morning a 4×4 truck came across that river. Was not expecting that. It woke me up. They stopped right at my camp and sat there for about 5 minutes. My heart was pounding and I was scared. I have no defense and not sure what these people were thinking. They eventually left and I prayed they would be going the long way out. But no, about a hour or so later they came back. They didn't stop but continued on crossing back over the river. After, I told some friends about this encounter one gave me a air pistol and then i got some bear spray. I always park were I can leave if I have to. I do fear people coming into my camp, being a older female camping alone you need to give the impression your not alone. You have to be careful about camping in the bush because there are some crazy people out there.
Still, I love the solitude, nothing beats the peace and quiet, and the beauty of nature.

One doesn't need to dwell on the "what if situations" but one does need to have a plan for those situation & have it mapped out & practised in one's mind. Failure to do so may be failure to survive.
We spend the winters in the south western US in our truck camper and have never felt unsafe. We've stayed in many Walmarts and Cracker Barrels and had zero issues. Having said that, we use our discernment and pass up some places that could be sketchy.
I was weeding my unruly garden yesterday and disturbed a big lizard until its leg appeared. I feared a snake, but it was just a " blue tongued lizard," harmless.😅You live in a very beautiful 19:35 country. It's wonderful to see. Sometimes wild animals are less dangerous than some humans.🎉😊❤

Before my truck camper I had a topper. I was sleeping in the back when someone tried opening my truck door. Luckily, when I yelled, hey, they took off. I have a bow with an arrow ready to go along with bear spray. I was out in the boonies on a turn off on a paved road. I have learned to camp off forest service roads or a business with cameras.
Western Canada always felt pretty safe to me the half dozen times I've driven through going to Alaska and back. Except for the time I had to drive a tour bus through Vancouver when working for the Olympics, their street lanes are so narrow!
You are so correct on everything you said, I am prepared for just about any situation because I like boondocking more than anything and like you, I am a solo traveler. The most scared I have ever been was when I experienced something that I still don’t know what it was but I don’t think it was human. I will never forget that night but other than that it has been ok for me. Maybe traveling with a buddy would definitely lessen or eliminate much of the risks.

Lived in different places in BC for the last 48 years all out in the forest or rural. Seen lots of bears. Had 9 cross the farm last summer and in all the time only had bears huff at us twice. Mostly because the bear was startled. Respect your rural environment and it’s residence. Momma moose are way scarier, next to people in the city
I live in BC and bear spray was probably the first purchase I made after going fulltime in '22, haven't had to use it yet, possibly because I just talk to the potential bears and let them know what's up.
One thing a lot folks need keep in mind, if you have health insurance in the USA not all plans are accepted once you leave your state, so look into travels health insurance that will cover all of em, you'll need look into health insurance that cover you outside the USA. ...Otherwise you can end up with a big medical bill if you get ill or end up in the hospital not covered.

Just found you, but you're adorable with such a wonderful and funny personality. Bears and Moose are very scary, but Cougars creep me out the most. Maybe because where I live in the mountains of N. California we have a lot of them. In fact earlier this year my friend up here had 2 brothers that she knew (in their late teens) in Placerville area that were attacked. And one of the brothers was killed by this Cougar. The boys were hunting in their local woods by their home for dropped antlers and the cat stalked and attacked them. So sad. Stay safe out there. I think what would scare me the most besides wildlife and people, is breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

If I was alone in my van and got a knock at 2 or 3 in the morning or any time for that matter, and I didn't see anything that looked like an official vehicle, I would definitely let that person know that someone was in there because likely that's going to scare them off. if you pretend like you're not in the van, they're going to try to break in if that's their intention. I have not figured out why van lifers decide to whisper and stay super quiet when they hear someone outside their van. If their intention is to rob you then they're trying to break in to an empty vehicle, they're likely not going to stand around trying to break in if they know someone is in there. let them know you're in there and if you need to let them know you're armed
My risk assessment when remote camping and no cell service. Be as prepared as you can be for whatever might happen and deal with it as best you can. As an older lady who remote camps by myself the last 18 years. Always carry a good emergency pack when hiking.
1) Falling and badly injuring myself. If I gotta crawl out 5 or 10 kilometers that's what I'll do, and hope I don't become lunch for a hungry bear or cat.
2) Having an accident and going over a steep embankment or cliff.
3) Medical emergency such as heart attack, low sugar, etc. take care of your health out there, in general whether in town or out in wilderness. First aid training helps.
4) Crazy bad people. Be ready to defend yourself, not just physically, but mentally, practice in your head different scenarios and how to deal with them in whatever situation it is, then if something does happen you're better prepared to de-escalate or fight back or run.
5) Wild cats, because they can stalk you from above, especially when hiking mountain trails.
6) Bears, especially mamas with cubs.
I feel safer camping remote than parking overnight downtown in a large city. Even so. One time I was camped in a campground, facing inward, deep in the trees. Was sitting in my truck when a car with 4 young guys came and parked right behind me, blocking me, they all got out and walked through my camp to the river. Locked my doors and got my weapons handy. Watched to see what they would do, but they just looked at the river and then they left. You never know. Then I went and parked somewhere else for the night, did NOT feel comfortable staying there when they knew I was there, and keeping an eye out for that vehicle. Since then I always park facing outward and try to leave enough room that they can't block my vehicle in without having to ram them too much and disabling my vehicle if it came to that.
I live in a big city and overall risks are the same, though in the city human predators are dangerous. Even in a place full of people, there are risks because these days that doesn't stop some human predators. Get some self-defense training.
That being said, I am very careful and cautious when alone out in the backcountry, as well as in the city, but I love the backcountry and if something happens to me out there, no better way to go out than being where I love most and doing what I love most.
When I was living in my ford ranger I felt more comfortable sleeping in town but spent my day time out of town.

If you are travelling in the north in the winter....at least have a way of starting a fire , if your vehicle brakes down..35 below is the same inside your car as outside....you should also have a proper winter coat...dont leave the city for a 4 hr road trip with just a sweater on ...take fire starter...and a heavy winter coat...even if its dirty..you wont care if your car shuts down.....more than food its important...you can probably go 2 weeks without food....you will freeze to death overnight.....If you are on a road , someone will come along the next day....unless you are out in the middle of nowhere...in that case you should be prepared with food and water......As for the health ..take your prescribed pills with you...and the rest is a gamble we all take
So much to say on this. I’ve only ever had one actual person related event, I was boondocking, in July, on the road to Telegraph Cove, Vancouver Island, a car came roaring up the dirt road, lights on high beam with roof top spot lights on, It wasn’t until they were right beside the van that I could see it was RCMP. Scared the cr@p out of me. Turned out they were looking for someone. I asked if I should leave, was he dangerous, they said no, so I stayed, very unsettled night. I’ve had tons of bear encounters. I’ve also had to do the Heimlich maneuver on someone, but it wasn’t RV/camping related. 😊
Other notes on the beasties in the woods: they can hear, see, and smell, you LONG before you are aware they are there. However, you can occassionally surprise/startle a bear (usually, but other large wild animals as well) so, yes, carry something that makes an unfamiliar noise and use it as you walk. So snacks should be low oder. Also a good idea to tie a bell to a leg or an arm to let the beasties know you are coming. You only want to see a wild animal from a VERY respectful distance. If you come onto a fresh kill, back away carefully and quickly. Stay alert. Leave the little kids at home with their grandparents - much safer there. AND, probably not a great idea to take your small, yappy dog on a walk in the wild places. A cougar or a bear would see your little jewel as a handy snack. If you do take a bigger dog, keep them safely on a leash. And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE that bear begging for snacks at the side of the road often does not know the difference between your precious child and an offered snack. You, and your kids will have a better experience through the car window. Notes from the wild places.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, in the deep south, we worry about snakes , alligators, and heat stroke.
Common denominator would be the two leged varmints.
I'm less afraid in my trailer in the woods at night than I am in a house during the day/night in the city. Mostly because we have crazy neighbours and you never know what people are capable of. I've watched too many horror neighbour stories lol.

I've had encounters with pretty feral range cattle camping west of rocky. But I had my 30 30 win. with me. Always had that just in case. 1976 was the year that happened. I remember a young fella came jogging into our camp, he had just few in from Germany. We were camped at the end of this gravel road towards jackfish lake. He asked me where is the road ? and I told him that's the end of it the rest is all bush. We'll he was totally shocked he's never seen a road come to a end before. I laughed pretty hard. I let him shoot my rifle a few times he was totally in bliss.

I made up a 7ft spear to hike with after my 60lb dog got bitten on the butt a few times by some very hungry coyotes. Mostly puncture wounds and a few L shaped rips in his hide he looked at me as if to say those dogs are jerks! I ran into the brush with a 3in lockblade and chased them off. A good spear increases your confidence level that's for sure.

My biggest fear exploring the outdoors is getting accidentally injured and having to make my way out. Predators are a distant risk for me after having had 6 bear encounters and 3 cougar encounters, all being resolved safely.
My wife and I were stalked by a grizzly bear while hiking in Wells Grey Provincial Park.
I have some pretty bad arthritis and peripheral neuropathy but my adrenaline kicked in big time and I could almost run. At several points we could see him about three feet away just off the bushes stalking us. I had already told my wife that if it came at us, she was to wait till i made sure it went after me and then she was to run away and don't look back. Only a couple other times in my life that I seriously thought I was gonna die and this one or two

I live in Ladysmith. My daughter and I went for a drive last night and grabbed a milkshake and parked in the Save On Foods parking lot while we drank them. A white pickup that had a big camper on it pulled up and parked in front of us. For a minute I thought it might be you as the rig looked so much like yours haha I told my daughter that I wonder if it was you as I remember you being here on the island. Guy got out and sort of looked like you too. Couldn't see too well as it was dark out. I went to your channel and was comparing your rig and his. Although very similar it wasn't you. If it was yours I would have said hi when you went back to your truck. Although knowing me I would have chickened out lol

Hello Kevin how are you today I am going to Alaska about two from Anchorage in 2026 and a friend of mine told me there is tons of black bears and Grizzlies Brown and wolves so I said oh great but I always wanted to go there for a month to see the Beautiful mountains I was thinking of driving there but it would take me for + days to get there
Hey Kevin, glad to see your doing well, If I could make a suggestion it would be to get some kind of a pew pew if you know what I mean, a pump action stored safely with a lock. if you dont have a license you can get a decent cross bow which is better than nothing and would do the trick with a well placed shot, would also give a guy more peace of mind. Just my two cents, take care out there
Well I would recommend a 10 mil and a 12 g pump with 3 inch slugs. But he's in Canada where their ruler declared that Canadian Citizens don't have a right to defend yourself. But very least 12 g with slugs.

People are always the biggest threat but it’s actually a minor threat. Any establishment at night is probably the biggest threat. The more remote generally the safer you are. I’m prepared for the medical aspect obviously 😂. In the US we have pew pews 😊 stay safe 👍🏼

If you’re living in a camper in the city… vs out in the hills… I bet your mental health and overall clarity would be way off. That being said, you should definitely have a short barrel 12 gauge in the camper at all times.
