Watching this at half speed, while watching you break it down at half speed, is entertainment at its fullest 😂😂😂. Thanks man, Clarence is my all time favorite, twas listening to the Kentucky Colonels back in the 70s and 80s when there was no internet. What a great time to be alive!
Thanks for breaking down some Clarence, Marcel! He's probably my favorite player, but I've always found his style to be so syncopated and idiosyncratic--pretty much unapproachable for me considering my limited capabilities and tin ear. ...appreciate the little window in to this break!
So the first chord change in Dark Hollow is I to V, but Clarence seems to be playing notes from the IV chord over that V chord. Why does it sound good?
@@Qman170 well, specifically he plays an F and a G note. He's basically turning it into a dominant 7th chord but you can't hear the tritone unless you're listening to the backing band. Clarence is using pacing to increase the contrast here between his lead and the band's backup. Trying to listen to both at once is like trying to focus on two objects near and far. One will always be blurry when the other's in focus.
@@Qman170 I highly doubt this was his reasoning, but there's a very common thing in soul music where - because you don't want a full, strong, "cheesy" sounding V chord - you play the 5 in the bass, but a IV chord over the top. One really iconic example most people know is "The Long And Winding Road": The Loooong, and, winding, road *BAM BAAM, BAM BAAM* "the BAM BAAM" is that chord. Here, you could think of it as a C/D. Can sound pretty harsh if there's prominent F#s, but that's not the case here, so it's fine.
That's because I crop out all the messy bits so my live stream looks nice, haha. It's Guitar Pro 7, great piece of software. There's an affiliate link in the description of the video if you feel like supporting!

One of my favorite solos, of any genre. It gives me chill bumps.
What a superb job you've done in transcribing this. Well done. 😉
The Dark Hollow break Clarence takes on the Muleskinner album is the greatest bluegrass solo of all time.
PLEASE DO “ LAND OF THE NAVAJO “!!
Love this thanks !!
Good afternoon Marcel!

Hey, Marcel! Will you do Josh Williams’, Lonesome Lesson Learned?
Can you try thunder by billy strings?

Magic. Clarence was secretly a wizard
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer I want to understand the magic. My guess is that he turned it into a Cadd9 type of thing.

What TAB app are you using? It looks straight forward...

How about New KC live in Sweden
Clarences break on I know what it means to be lonesome
It’s a good one!
The thing I love about blue grass, is it is pretty simple stuff that sounds great.
The bones of bluegrass are simple, it's the overlaid flesh thats complicated.
Clarence wasn't simple though
I love the way people who know absolutely nothing about bluegrass always feel the need to say how simple it is...
Dawg spookin around behind Clarence haha
❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂
My Papaw Bill Browning was the original artist to Dark Hallow.
