First off, welcome to Germany. Another friendly American couple finding out about my country first hand. I hope and wish you'll have a great time here.
Just noticed you were on the Marktplatz in Wiesbaden around the Hessian parliament and the Marktkirche. Beautiful city, with some great sights. My grandparents used to live there more than 30 years ago.
The Wilhelmsstraße is the most ritzy street, leading along the Staatstheater and the Casino on one side, with lots of high class jewelers and fashion stores on the other side.
The Wochenmarkt= farmers market happens there regularly. The fresh seasonal local produce you can get is awesome. However I wouldn't buy imported fruits and veggies there (such as avocado) as they have quite some distant shipping to arrive there. That means they are usually picked under-ripened and get exposed to ripening gasses that may let them look more appealing but usually their taste is a bit lacking. Just my tips. Cheeses and meats are exceptions as they can be refrigerated without damaging their taste or consistency.
Edit: milk alternatives exist in most cafes and stalls on markets. But don't expect them to carry all varieties. Soya milk, oat milk, and almond milk are the most common alternatives. Careful, anything similar looking to coffee creamer from the USA is pretty definitely containing dairy products here in Germany. Just for the record: unless it is for a proven allergy, or conscience reasons, you might give GOOD (!) whole milk, pasteurized but not homogenized a try here. The separation and later reintroduction of fat into the milk serum by the milk companies does have a detrimental a effect on some people. With non-homogeneous milk the fat content is left in the milk, reducing the number of processing steps by quite a lot. This may (may!) be the cause of dairy allergies for some (!) people. Dito for certain gluten intolerance issues. Try a good sourdough bread that has been leavened for 2-3 days instead of a turbo leavening agent that reduces the leavening time to 8 hours. Again, no certainty, so be careful and try with small samples at first. Just another tip.
Edit 2: at 6:23 in your video you pointed out the old Rathaus (nope doesn't have anything to do with rodents, it's just the city council hall). In the basement there used to be the Rathauskeller, a restaurant that was pretty nice. The entrance used to be at the left corner of that building in the shot you showed here.
Edit 3: yepp, the technical translation for Pfand would be deposit. Something given as collateral in case you don't bring something back, which is returned on returning the object for the deposit . Similar to nearly all plastic bottles you buy anywhere in Europe, or nearly all beverage cans. All of them will have a deposit/Pfand on them, so be diligent, collect and return them, and you might be astonished at how much you can get back for recycling.

Great tips on the avocados…would have never known! And I’ve heard that about milk before so I definitely should try that while I’m here with the pasteurized! So funny you said that because Casey and I had recently been talking about that very thing!
The pfand is really cool too! I love how easy it is to recycle here! They definitely don’t make it nearly as simple or available. Would love to see a change back home on that!
@@CompassChronicleTravels Since RustyDust already mentioned the Staatstheater, you'll really have to go to see an opera or concert there. It's easily the most lavish and ridiculously over-decorated opera house in Germany, built for emperor Wilhelm II. The foyer is something that looks right out of a movie set. Just google for "Wiesbaden Staatstheater Foyer" to get an idea...

You will find different kinds of Bratwurst from different meat.
Standard is with lots of beef or pork, but especially to fit Muslim needs, there are also sausages from chicken, and there are also some made without meat, and some of theses are close to a meat sausage, but others are far away, so you just have to taste and find the right ones.
At 04:00 fresh cheese ? No way, "Hartkäse" is at least 6, 9 or 12 month old ! I know, i´m a "Klugscheißer", haha.
Welcome to Germany. All the luck to get an appartment or a house.
For a nice coffee just go to a bakery. They all have good maschines.
For clothes just look around.

Here is a trick for Americans struggling with the metric system while in Europe: Just use metric pounds! That's what the Revolution-era French did when the metric system was introduced there -- but only after it had nearly failed without this trick. It's what the Germans did in the late 19th century when the various local weights and measures were replaced by the metric system. And it's something that most Germans still understand to this day, at the very least those working a market stand.
A _metric pound_ is exactly 500 g, which is exactly half a kilogram. The beauty of this is that it's in the middle of the range of most of the pre-metric pounds and not too different from any of them. It's just 10% more than an American pound.
The German word is _Pfund._ When asking for a Pfund or pound in Germany, expect to get a metric pound, i.e. 1.1 lbs.

According to the metric system...in order to get a feeling for the basics...just over the thumb "1 kilogramm" = a little tiny bit more but basically literally "2 pounds minus 3,5 ounces" ....so half of a kilogramm which are 500gramm are a tiny bit more (round 1.75 ounces more) than a pound (1 pound = 450 gramm)....usually in Groceries very much things are foremost packed and priced in 100 gramm packages which are over the thumb round 3 and a half ounces.
1 grain = 0.064 gramm or 64 milligramm
1 liter is round a little bit less than a quarter of a gallon, or 1 Gallon is 4.5 liter....Many drinks are filled in 1,5 liter bottles which are a 3rd of a Gallon.
But I recommend to stop converting in general just take those metric measurements as like they come across and you will adjust to those metric amounts very quickly simply because there are in Germany (in Europe in general) no imperial measurements in place you can compare with anyway.
German Käsekuchen is different that US cheesecake because the main ingrediant differs...while in the US they use cream cheese ( = "Frischkäse" in German) for cheese cakes in Germany they use curd ("Quark" in German) which is "the fundamental basic cheese product" for making any type of cream cheese
Oh yeah! Now that you mention it, I do remember hearing about the Quark in cheesecake somewhere before we came over. I don’t think I’ve ever had that, so super interested to try it. Also thank you for the detailed info on the metric system…very helpful! Makes sense and like you mentioned, I’m sure naturally adjusting over time will kick in as well. Hi Casey, yes, Currywurst if a favourite for a lot of people. Yes, its Bratwurst with the cetchup and curry topping. It taste everywhere different so try it out. There are so many different kind of Bratwurst and the wekk known once are Rostbratwurst, the Thüringer Rostbratwurst and the Nürnberger Bratwurst. The Nürnberger are shorter and you can get 3-4 of them in a bun with Sauerkraut. Delicious, try it out once. Wherever you settle down inform yourself if there will be a local market day within a week and buy some food there to support local farmers. Its bit more expensive than in a supermarket but mostly very fresh. Btw, soon the Spargelsaison the asparagus time will start. Here mostly white asparagus will be eaten, mostly with heavy sauce hollandaise. Go for it. At the beginning prices will be very high, so wait it. Harvesting end wil be on Johannistag which is on 24th of june this year. If you like strawberries, I am sure there will be fields around where you can go in and harvest by yoursself for less price those already harvested. Casey, as you eat meat, try out the different types of Schnitzel(pork) or once a Wiener Schnitzel which is veal and very thin with a layer. Once you will come along of a good tasty pork knockle with bavarian Knödel and Sauerkraut.
Explanation, because it obviously was a misunderstanding. Market/Markt in Germany means fresh produce from the area mostly.
It's not a farmers market as you know it with food stalls and such. ^^

In my town there are furniture and nick nacks shops and restaurants in our market hall. Oysters and champagne bar.
There are worse ways to spend saturday morning/afternoon than that. ^^

A special food video would be interesting. Why special? Because Germany has so many international food styles: Italian, Chinese, Turkey, Steak Houses, etc. And of course typical german dishes. Would be interesting to hear something about it.

Recup means it is a cup for re using. So, don't throw it into the bin, but wash it and bring it next time to be refilled and pay the coffee.

But better visit the Mainzer Wochenmarkt at the cathedral. It's much nicer with much more atmosphere. 🙂
Take a stroll along the promenade from the main bridge to Fischtorplatz, then you are almost at the thousand-year-old cathedral. Alternatively, the other way round, cross the river and take a few steps to the right where you can enjoy the view at the best waterfront on the Rhine, preferably in the afternoon when the sun sets over the city. Or just do both ways, you can take the bus to/from the bus stop Kastel/Brückenkopf at the far side of the bridge, and with good weather, it's definitely the best way to enter the city by walking over the bridge and take in the view.

Try the bread with the sauce of the Currywurst, if you dont eat meat.
They have to show the country where the fruits are from. Normally you get fruits from Spain and Italy, oranges may also come from Morocco and Israel. You will be astonished but dry fuits like nuts and raisins often come from California.

Visit Cafe Maldaner - it's very beautiful and the oldest Cafe in Wiesbaden - have fun here, it's a wunderful City. And today is a Carneval Parade in the City- check it out.

When ordering on the market you could also use the 'ein Pfund' which is the metricized version of the pound. It's a tat more than the imperial pound but close enough. It's about 500 gramms or half a kilo.
On those types of markets often the old units are still common.

Did you say you do not eat red meat? Bratwurst is made from pork, and in my opinion that is not red meat. Red meat = beef.
Haha yes I think you’re right. 😆 I am so used to putting it in the same category out of habit. I was a vegetarian when I was younger but went back to eating basically fish, turkey, because my system just wasn’t agreeing with cutting all meat out. I’m looking forward to trying all the food here though, and anything I can’t, Casey will GLADLY take off my hands haha
Americans: Having a random cake at at a German Market "That's the best cake I've ever had"......wow, that really makes me a bit suspicious about the taste of anything in the US.
