    Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
    As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

      Respect is a complex issue, and lies at the heart of every movement for equality or against abuse. The primary struggle against racism, misogyny, and genocide are all directly related to the limited number of people who have taken the time to understand respect worldwide. Without respect, real love is not possible, and neither is a healthy culture or society.
      One way to understand Respect is having Self Respect or in other words Honoring thyself.
      In the words of Rob Roy “ Every man with Honor is a King but not every King has Honor.” Honor is something no one can give and No One can take away..
      So what I’m saying here.. is you’ll have to look inward to find out what Respect is.

      @MoralSingularity you know nothing of my ancestry, im a Barra MacKenzie, we fought in the Scottish wars of Independence in support of King Robert de Brus. My ancestor John “Saighead” MacKenzie. Master Archer, was betrayed by his chieftain and decided to leave the clan to The isle of Barra. My grand father learned to live to fight another day. The fact im alive here today shows he was a bright lad, not only do the strong survive, so do the smart. Theres ALOT of MacKenzies out there like the ones in castle leod who im vaguely related too. Im more Barra MacNeil than MacKenzie in terms of genealogy. I appreciate all ethnic groups as they appreciate mine. Golden rule.

      You do realise that ultimately all people descend from Africans and so everyone on the planet is an immigrant right?
      Our culture is a social construct and evolves over time. Alba does not even exist as it once did as Scotland derives its name from Scotia -- an entirely different kingdom that was formed from a different agreement between the clans. Trying to preserve the ethnic make-up of Alba would be a vain task as it long ago became a redundant concept in terms of how many Scots view themselves. Associating Celtic culture and pride in one's heritage with such hateful and anti-immigration ideas will only hurt the image of efforts to promote historical knowledge and pride, giving English nationalists more of an excuse to eliminate Scots' sense of national identity.

As to the idea of Scotland being made up of only white people, let me ask you what would happen in the case of guys like Bruce who made this video? He is half white and half black, and if you want all countries to be ethnostates then I assume that that includes Ghania where his father is from, so he would not be accepted there either. I am a Japanese woman who was born and raised in Tokyo, I moved to Glasgow at age 22 to work towards getting my PhD.
    I am now 27, and have lived in Scotland for 5 years, and have absolutely fallen in love with the country and plan to stay here forever.
    I am now engaged to a Scottish woman (oor wee lesbian wedding was delayed thanks to Covid 😡)
    I now speak more in Scots than I do in English or Japanese, using words like wee, hoose, moose, baw, mair, heid, deid, scunnered etc.
    I love Irn Bru, haggis, square sausage, I even made square sausage ramen once!
    I drink industrial volumes of Tennents lager, pints of heavy and craft beers.
    The problem I have is, when can I call myself Scottish?
    Will I ever be Scottish??
    Or will I always be a Japanese girl in Scotland?

      I would say enjoy living in Scotland and once you become naturalised British call yourself Scottish but honestly is that important? We are all human after all, nationalism can be dangerous , one thing that I like about the majority of Scots is that their brand of nationalism is quite liberal but yes there are some lunatics here in Scotland and England (obviously). Stay safe and good luck.

    I don't care what colour a person's skin is, if you have an interest in the history of a certain period of country you should be able to study it and talk about it. I am passionate about studying British history, but I also enjoy studying Greek and Roman history, plus the history of the Mongols, Samurai history and Middle Eastern history. Your race should not disqualify you from studying and talking about particular types of history!

    I am half Algerian half Scottish & pass 99% of the time as a straight up white Scottish man. I was born here from an Algerian father & a Scottish Mother & adopted by a white Scots family in 1972 I see myself as a genuine Scot it is all I know. To be Scottish encompasses many different things that can include but is not limited to DNA. To me at least it devalues the meaning of being Scottish if you can just arrive here & then claim to be a Scot. Over time people who do settle here will have many if not all the traits other Scots have & resonate with & then they can have a claim to be Scottish. No one thing can determine your Scottishness so a single thing like skin colour cannot on its own stop or make you Scottish.

      You are definitely Scottish mate as is the presenter of the channel. Never let anyone take your cultural heritage away from you! Race politics was invented to divide us as they want us to see ourselves as ‘white’ or ‘black’ first before Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Northern, whatever as it breaks solidarity amongst folk.

    • @harrypmay
      @harrypmay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Tigerman writer no mate, I know a lot of black people see themselves as Black British but race politics predates the Windrush generations and even Pax Britannica. It begins in the Carribbean at the outset of English/British colonialism when Irish indentured servants were sent there to work alongside African slaves. The Irish and Africans joined forces a few times and rebelled against the English colonialists. Obviously sharing the same oppressor will do that so the English had to come up with a way to divide them and thus race politics were born. Only after these rebellions do you start to see the idea of a ‘white’ race and its used purely to make oppressed white people think they’re better off being oppressed than uniting with their fellow oppressed man (who’s apparently stealing their job and all that racist tripe the media vomit out.) Emma Dabiri’s latest book touches on it so maybe give it a read if you think I’m chatting guff. Also, the reason a lot of black people see themselves as Black first and foremost is down to racist arseholes othering them not because they think being Black is better, or more important, than being British. If it wasn’t for Enoch Powell, NF, and the rest, these people would see themselves as British Jamaican etc. and that would be the end of. Instead, just as they did all those years ago in the Carribbean, the British establishment baited poor white people into thinking black people were their enemies (as opposes to them.) As a result, regardless of whether you were from the St Lucia or Nigeria you were always ‘Black’ first so black people stucked together and thus you get the ‘Black British’ which is borne out of the racist reception they got when they arrived (and still do for the most part.) Putting people into categories of ‘black’ and ‘white’ is simple divide and conquer and it’s very obvious if you think about it. Anyway, my point was whoever you are, wherever you are, the place you call home is what you are. If you’re privileged enough to have foreign heritage then it’s a bonus but you’ll never stop being Scottish, Welsh, Irish, whatever first and foremost. Unless, of course, you don’t identify as such, which is fine too. Personally, I consider myself Lancashire Irish which isn’t even an ethnic identity last time I checked but it sums up me and my family’s past and present up quite well. Bruce might see himself as Scottish Ghanaian, or perhaps even Ghanaian Scottish. Notice how none of these identities indicate race though? You can presume if someone is Scottish Ghanaian they will probably be mixed race on account of Ghana being in West Africa but does the race even matter when it comes to nationality? Not at all, so why do we have to point it out? Who wants us to point it out? Those are the questions you have to ask yourself and, in my opinion, it is just an extension of the age old British imperial tactic of divide and conquer. Besides, what actual the fuck is British anyway? Technically speaking, the Britons are the Welsh but when someone says British they mean English, don’t they? But they don’t mean a Geordie, or a Scouser, or even a Midlander. When they say British they’re talking about the people they see on TV who, more often than not, comes from the Home Counties and had what’s known as an elite upbringing. Which is to say boarding schools and a ticket to Oxbridge. ‘British’ is a fantasy concocted by colonialists and it’s a dying identity. By the end of the decade Scottish and Welsh people won’t think of themselves as British, they barely do now. Nobody wants to be tarnished with the toxic British exceptionalist attitude anymore.

    • @harrypmay
      @harrypmay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Tigerman writer long story short, race politics is not ‘identity politics’ and began in the 1600s as a result of colonialism. If black people see themselves as black first and foremost it is because of racists not allowing them to simply be ‘British’ or ‘American’ or whatever. I don’t see myself as ‘white’ anything, personally, as I’ve got very little in common with most Europeans.

But I have a deep and passionate love of the Highland Pipes, just that little clip of pipe music in this video gave me goose bumps. So I've been loving my journey of finding out more about my Scottish heritage and ancestors. But I often ask myself the exact question of should I as a black woman talk about my new found Scottish history. Learning more about myself and where I come from is so exciting but I keep most of what I find to myself because of the responses I get, like weird looks, they don't seem too interested, or they ask "Are you sure?" almost like I'm making it up lol. Of course you should be talking about Scottish history! You’re Scottish and you have learned to teach Scottish history brilliantly. I love how you start your show with “Let me tell you a story.”
    I’m American with Scottish and Ulster roots and I’m a Wallace too 😁. Now most of my family never knew a thing about the history of Scotland and Northern Ireland but they would sure tell you that they were “Scotch Irish.” Years ago my mother and her sisters handed me stacks of family history and genealogy stuff which sparked my interest. My mother had never read any of it. I had been to Scotland with a great aunt and again when I was 18 spending a Summer in England with my aunt who was married to a Brit. I’ve been back to Scotland a number of times because I love Scotland and history in general. My grandmother was born in Belfast and I have traveled to Ireland as well but my opinion of the Plantation of Ulster is not a good one considering what was done to the native Irish Catholics. Kind of like what was done to the Native American Indians. With that being said I don’t think many Americans are interested in their roots however I think it’s good to remember that this is not where we are from. We came from Europe, Africa, The Middle East and everywhere in between.
    I have traveled the world and love it. Israel is one of my favorite destinations for archaeology and history and incidentally my husband is Moroccan and I have lived there for 4 years.

    I don't think anyone alive is 100% of anything. I like you because you make history fun to listen to. Most channels have me yawning with monotone droning on and on about the topic without ever getting to the point.

    Bruce, you are a great entertaining source of the history of Scotland. Don't let the words of a moron or two deter you. Scots covers a whole host of shades , and lets face it none of us are as "white" as a Scottish red head . All that should matter is what is said not who says it.

      I wholly understand..... I am a Texan.......were it not for Scots there would be no Texas...... my love and respect for the Scottish people runs deep ......as deep as Texas tradition and history..... You see, we are not a "society" as in the other 49 States.....we are a "people" and we owe that to the ruggedness and intelligence of our Scottish fore fathers...... :-)

      Ghanan dad, Scotch mum. I can feel it. My dad had "color" in him, and mom was white but had some interesting ancestry. Worshiping pure whiteness, color ancestry and such, it is stupid. But Scottish is interesting and I like how Scots as a culture think in fours, Americans can barely think in twos.

      The left WANTS culture wars as it allows them to keep playing the victim card.
      If they admit we're all the same and that the colour of your skin doesn't matter then that strips them of victim status.

      @@Marcuscaravan The left doesnt want culture wars. There are just those, like yourself presumably, who struggle to acknowledge that perhaps ethnic minorities have been treated badly, and that being white is actually quite advantageous. And those that do, somehow feel like their white advantage is under threat and aernt happy about it. Is trying to rectify these such a bad thing? Balance is hard to achieve, it's a pendulum that swings, just funny to see you freak out as it gets more and more central.
