Hi had no clue on lot of issues until I started following your videos and guidelines. I'm truly learning so much; my vehicle is e39 (530d) looking to benefit more from your helpful videos. Paul
Thank you for this video!! You helped me finally solve the puzzle that is the E39 sunroof. My shade/cover had been apart for a while and was broken when I bought the car. I had everything but could not figure out how to get the shade back together. Your video solved it for me and my car is whole again. So...thanks for this one and all the other great content you put out. Invaluable resource! Cheers and happy new year!
Hi Nathan, great video's! I had the parts, but waited to find the right video. I watched your "Part 1 BMW E39 E38 M5 Front Control Arm Suspension And Tie Rod Replacement 525i," yesterday morning, and had the 525i back together after dark. That tie rod install was tricky. Install the tie rod end 1st, start the adjust end about 3 threads 2nd, angle ball joint and twist turn and shove up the tapered hole. Then 4th wrench the adjustment nut for 10 minutes. Third tries the charm again! Checked the alignment this morning, it was way off , measuring tie rod length before does not work. However while car was on ramp, I sighted along both edges of front tire sidewall and when they lineup with the rear wheel I checked alignment with string and the steering wheel straight, perfect. Left side is still off, but adjustment nut frozen so, next weekend for that tie rod. Thanks for your videos! This video on sunroof is terrific, next month for that, BUT, I need headliner R&R info, did you make a video on that??? Thanks again.
Thanks for the video, I was looking for my E60 but noting on internet. With this video I saw that E60 also has the same mechanism and helped me a lot. Good job 🙏

Hey Nate I’ve got a 2001 740iL with the metal sunroof, I’m in the middle of wrapping everything in suede and I’m considering changing to the glass roof and slider with the handle from my 740i. Should I be swapping the whole cassette or is the metal cassette compatible with the glass roof?
This my exact question but on my 95 740il.... I'm also in the process of re-wrapping in suede (black) and I want to upgrade my sunroof from metal to glass.... Did you get yours finished?
@@eloiajohnson8981 what I found is that the tracks on the metal sunroof are shorter than that of the glass one and it also has a different mounting point at the rear instead of being a bar it’s 2 little plates with 2 holes each for screws to adjust the height., i couldn’t remove the tracks with the cassette in but I ended up removing the whole cassette for both the metal and glass sunroof and swapping them, circuit board was fried from crackhead wiring on the parts car so I changed that out and kept all the switches the same. When they say you have to break the one bolt to remove the wiring from the cassette it’s bullshit. Don’t brake anything bc you don’t need to. Just fish the wiring out it’s worth the extra time. Be careful wrapping it around the sunroof area, mine has some exposed bare headliner where my relief cut stretched. But yeah just save yourself the headache of wondering if the two will work if you swap internal parts, if the one for the glass sunroof is broken however im sure you can swap the tracks and stuff because they look identical aside from the plastics for the gator on the side of the glass sunroof. TLDR: keep the cassette for the glass one if it’s good and just take the extra hour to swap them
Arent you suppose to push the button up in middle? For it to tilt n push it forward like u were to close it from tilt position? Thats how it is in my e46. U push up for tilt, push forward to clost the title n then push back to slide it
Useful video.. but i have a question. My E39 is from 95’ first once.. so i want to take out the roof but mine sunroof is not from cristal.. is from metal. So one day i remove all the things, scrolls everything.. but 2 of them are at the end of the sunroof below so are completely imposible to remove. Do you have any idea to remove them? Much thanks
@nathan, Apparently there's a trick to make the sunroof open completely while the sunroof shade is still closed. Which means the you can remove the shade without removing the sunroof glass!?
Help help help.. Is it possible to reach that rear bolts (two on each side) when the roof is not pop up? I have installed new parts (these plastic as always) and it works for few minutes... After that i closed roof and lef side was lkwer than right. Something is broken . I must reinstsll once again but i dont knkt is it possible to reach that bolts when the roof is closed.. :(
I can open mine all the way, but once It starts to close it stops halfway and sometimes pulls back a little. The closest I can get it to be closed is right before it retracts the slipstream deflector, but it won't go past that point or tilt. I can see the chains pulling on both sides and the guide rails look fine, there's also no strange noise, so I'm not sure what's going on. Am I going to have to replace the entire assembly?
@@DC_R I opened the sunroof all the way and I cleaned the rails thoroughly and greased them good, it still didn't help so I manually shut it and I left it alone for a few weeks. I came back to manually tilt the sunroof just to see if it would, and like magic it started working again so I'm not entirely sure what had happened

Hi Nathan, simple Q pls , I want to replace a metal sunroof for a glass one on my e39, do i have to take the glass off the new cassette, or just put the cassette from inside the car as it is, coz its fully functioning.
I'm trying to do the same with my 95 740il and a donor 97' ..... wondering will it work?..... Did you ever get yours done? Is this possible for me as well?
Hey Nathan love your videos. I have a 2001 540i that the sunroof doesn't tilt but it does go fully back and forward. would you know how to fix that? Any pointers would be a great help
Quick question: i got a good deal on a m54b30 out of a 06 bmw x5. Engine will be going into my 01 bmw 330ci. I know oil pan has to be switched over. Maybe motor mounts. My question is its the same engine in the 06 x5 as 01 330ci right? Is there anything else thats needs to be changed? I remember watching one of ur videos a while back and u said its better to get an engine from the bmw suv since they r less likely abused n u also explained what needed to be changed over but i dont remember which video it was exactly. Thanks
Hey, fat chance you'll see this soon but think you can give me some advice on my sunshade? I was trying to fix my sunroof last night and the sunshade retracted all the way inside the roof. I cant pull it back out. I cant even get my fingers in the handle space comfortably to get a grip to pull on it. Any way I can fix this without doing too much? Or am i screwed cause i also have the window out.
Hey Nathan, can you make a video or explain how to remove shade on a metal sunroof on e39? i need to glue the fabric back, it came of, and i need to remove shade, but the shade can't slide all the way back like on a glass roof. Great detailed video btw :)
My problem is my 01 530i I can't move my glass in any way (guessing all of the track pieces are broken. It's not level and its leaking badly into my car :( how the hell do I even begin to get the sunshade; which will only close 3/4 of the way :(
I've got an 01' E38 and it sounds like the sunroof has come off the track or the cable isn't pulling/pushing. Any suggestions? I just get a bunch of noise and the sunroof is sitting low.
Nathan, thank you for the video, I've seen many of your great videos. This one was very useful until, you mentioned that putting the glass back in it is the hardest part of the job, BUT the next video shot the installation is DONE!, that's the part that we need to see, also you mentioned that the glass needed to be adjusted just right, but again you don't show the adjustments. Kind of disappointing. Thanks anyway for the effort.
Hey Nathan, I watch your videos allot. Teaching myself about my e46. Id really appreciate some insight on a problem im having issues with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. So my 2002 330xi just hit 199,000 miles, it runs really good, other than the problems Im about to mention. The car runs really smoothe, but its constantly filled with condensation. I dont have any heat in the car, so its hard to defrost the windshields, other than the back window which still defrost pretty easily with those heat strips running across it. Also my car has this milky residue around the oil cap when I open it, and a tiny drop on the end of the dipstick itself. Theres white smoke that clouds from the exhaust, but only sometimes. I figured it could be a blown headgasket, but the car runs fine, and isnt making any strange noises. Thats odd Id think. Its as if nothing is wrong with it. My coolant levels are fine, its not over heating at all. I use the recommended oil every 3-4k miles, i refill the coolant as needed, but still cant figure where all the condensation is coming from, and the milky residue. I live in Oregon, and its constantly raining here, so Its hard to tell. Thanks for reading this. Hopefully I can figure it out, before anything serious happens. Oh, I also have bad cats, but I just got headers Im going to install once I get a break in the weather.
I may be late but my 540i had condensation quite badly due to one of the cabin air intake tubes being lose/ broken and that was letting water directly into the interior
Man that process of the glass removal was painful to watch, maybe I missed some reason for doing it the way u did but I`ve never done it that awkwardly lol
