I’m late, but if anyone reads this… maybe try plain water before moving up to soap. I found the most gorgeous beaded lace over satin dress at a thrift shop for a whopping $25 several months before my wedding. It still had designer tags, and I was told later that it had already been partly altered for someone my height with almost my exact build, but had never actually been worn. The problem was a giant, very obvious brown coffee stain on the satin train part on the satin under the lace. The person altering the dress had apparently just given up on it after the spill, and I’m guessing the bridal shop just replaced it with a new one, because the stain was horrible, and they couldn’t just easily replace the fabric. They just left it there. I honestly loved the lace and fabric so much, I bought it anyway, thinking I could cut it up and make it into a pillow, maybe shorten it into a rehearsal dinner dress, or use the lace somehow. I brought it home and just decided to run the satin with the stain under some cold water, and by some miracle, that dark brown stain that had been there for years just disappeared right before my eyes-in seconds. It was like it had never happened! I was completely dumbfounded! I suddenly had an absolutely gorgeous, perfect designer wedding gown for $25 that even a stranger at the thrift shop said looked like it was made for me. I had never been so excited to buy something polyester, because I think the stain just couldn’t penetrate the fabric. It was definitely a gift from the universe, because things were really tight, and we had to plan a wedding on half a shoestring. The icing on the cake was when my then fiancé and I happened to stop into Goodwill just after a tuxedo shop had apparently gone out of business. There were racks of gorgeous tuxedos that were either new or were still very rentable, and great as my deal was, my husband found the perfect tux for a whopping $15! We took these amazing finds as a sign that the universe thought we really should get married! My rambling point is to try the least harsh method-just plain water-before you even try anything else, because sometimes that’s enough, and it might save your dress from unnecessary harsh treatment. It might even save the dress! Now I really need to drag that dress out, however, because I never got it cleaned after the wedding-eleven years ago, and I’m still afraid to look! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Same, I got married in 2016 and I'm just now about to wash my wedding dress, I can't believe how dirty it is, it's been sitting in a bug since my wedding night and I had no idea. Did you get all your stains out? I'm nervous I waited too long
Thank you! How ironic! I just did our first look in a wooded area and the bottom of my dress looks like yours did! I can't wait to get it cleaned up!! 🙌
thank you!!!! i have a beaded dress with the same issue at the bottom and on the straps. now i know that i can indeed clean it myself!!! i truly appreciate the time you took to make this video!!!
my dress was only $400 and these cleaning places are trying to charge 500 for cleaning?! so im trying this today...wish me luck lol kinda scared but refuse to pay so much for cleaning...my dress is only dirty from the bottom like yours
This is an amazing help to me because I have a dress that I got from a thrift store to help a girl with her small wedding. She doesn’t have much but I wanted her to have a pretty dress at least ,
My wedding was in July outside so the hem is very dirty. My dress looks a lot like yours and is 100% polyester also. Thank you for making this video which will help save a lot of money.
I like how you washed the dirty parts separately. Some videos show them putting all of the dirty hem parts in with the clean top part and I think it might get the rest of the dress dirty. My daughter's dress said to NOT use OBA - Optical Brighteners which are found in OxyClean and so many videos showed using that. Her dress also said to not dry clean or put in a washing machine. Make sure you check what the symbols on the care label mean. It is always best to wash as soon as possible before the stains are more set in.
I’m considering using my washing machine just as a tub that fills easily with water-no agitation! My bathroom and kitchen are way too small and there is no guarantee I won’t back into something that might damage it. I’ve read that you should also rinse the dress a couple of times with distilled water to avoid hard water deposits, which sounds like a good idea!
@@catherraan If there is beading or lace on the dress, I would start with hand washing, although I have heard that unadorned dresses like satin tend to do pretty well in the delicate cycle with the right cleaners!
Sorry for the late response 3 years later🤭I don't usually read comments but for future reference, my dress is a 2 piece strapless satin cathedral with embroidery and light beading. The dress was washed in a front load washer. I had an outdoor garden wedding & it rained a week leading up to my wedding & stopped the day before so the under carriage of the train got a little dirty & I also dropped strawberries 🍓 on the skirt which caused red stains so I took a chance on regular wash cycle to get it clean & it did not damage my dress. I personally did not care if the dress would get damaged so I threw it in the washer but to each their own. Use caution according to the material & design of your dress.
Super late but thank you for posting this. I am purchasing a used dress and the original owner was walking through snow. There are a few small stains on the train and she already had it dry cleaned so I was looking for a way to get the stains out. The stains aren't bad at all so I can't wait to try this.
That was a great video.... I mean, so much easier to understand how you went through the whole process now seeing it.... It looks so pretty and clean... Thank you. Very helpful, 😍❤️✌️
Great Job doll!! I have 3 wedding dresses for two separate weddings and there’s no way I’m paying $$$ more for the cleaning after what my dresses cost me already 🤣 so Thank you!!!!
I don't have dirt, it's just a little smelly and has sweat stains on the bodice. It's mostly polyester. Think I can do this? Super nervous but also don't want to spend $200 everytime I want to wear it
I'm a clothing re-seller and one of my favorite things to do is to buy wedding dresses and restore them to their former glory for resale. My advice to everyone doing this as evidenced in this video is to take your time, be extremely gentle especially with more delicate fabrics, get help from someone to do this, and to have patience because depending on the severity of the stains, this is generally a 2+ day process if you add in all the dry time and factor in the volume of larger gowns with a lot of netting, trains, and fabric.
@Marina Anastasia if the fabric can we washed without destroying the fabric or decorative elements, set it outside hanging for a couple of hours (not in direct sun as this can sun bleach certain fabric). Then soak it for about 6 hours in oxygen (check fabric to make sure this is okay), then put it in a fine mesh laundry bag and wash with a mild detergent, then hang and let air dry. If the material can handle it, you can also add scent boosters to the wash.
Found your youtube channel most interesting to get knowledge about dresses. I can't wait to see your post soon. Good Luck with the upcoming update. This video is really very informative and effective.
I never thought about using hand soap, I was about to buy soap flakes to clean my dress, but maybe I'll just use hand soap since I'm cheap. I just hope I didn't wait too long, my wedding was in 2016 and I just peaked at it recently and it's worse than I thought. I Figure it out give it a shot before just throwing it away
Thank You 🙏🏾 I needed to save my veil which was left hanging behind my door and had black smoke residue from a heater. 🤦🏽♀️ I was devastated, it had turned grey. xx
I feel like when the dress is 100% polyester there is no reason to take it to the dry cleaners. I am in love with my wedding dress and more likey to be gentle around beading and such. I got pregnant straight after we got married I would rather spend the money on my baby then at the dry cleaning. My dress is Morilee 2404 cost £1750 and it came out lovely, with stainremover, time and lukewarm water in the bath
What if my main part is bridal satin and the train lace applique? The bottom is dirty with dirt from walking on a path in the woods. How do I do the thick satin part?
My wedding was postponed from last year and I've just checked my dress - the lace has started to yellow and look old. Would this method still work to remove natural discolouration of fabric?
This is literally my dress or very close. It was an off the rack dress that has been tried on and is dingy up top. My wedding is next week. How do i clean the top around the armpits and breast area ? Its lace that looks a little warn and beading
My dress has some brownish stains, not dirt. How would I get that out? I thought about using dreft because I have a 4 month old lol so it's easy to just get and it's gentle and clear. But I don't want to ruin my dress! It's 100% polyester but it says dry clean with perchloroethylene solvent only😭 Please help me👏
One thing I didnt hear mentioned. Make sure your dress is Completely totally dry before you package/wrap it into any container. Like a day or more to air dry. Mildew can set in fast if not dry and aired out.
