Once upon a time in ye olden days, only the rich could buy art and it was hard to break into the art world. In modern times we are surrounded by art and almost anyone can access art that suits their personal tastes. I love these days!!
I love you both, too. 💖💖💖

I went through the gate keeping as a freelance illustrator before. I wanted to be a mainstream illustrator. I had to run the gauntlet of Art Directors and Publishers. I was able to get a little small press work but went broke trying to make it work. Since the digital age has grown I realized how outdated the other system. Proof is how there are AD’s and publishers still requiring drop off or mail in portfolios. I have a small following on my social media. I’ve had a website for a few years and working on my latest project for almost 2 years. No one is buying just yet but everything I make is all mine!

"CONNECT WITH HUMANS"!!!.............AAAAHHH!! (are there no cats which have galleries, which might exhibit my works??) Apparently not. Not even my own three cats will consider being my collectors. They even try to break things I make. Also, they seem to have no money, possibly because the seem to have no jobs. They claim to be independently wealthy, and have no clue as to how their food and housing is being provided for them......

!100%! I agree, a lot of "bad" advice is really just outdated advice. I graduated from art school in 2010 and even in 2010 the school was teaching us to have a resume, have an artist statement, have slides of your work to send to galleries! I mean really? It was all about getting into galleries and getting discovered. Most of the teachers were talking about being represented by multiple galleries. I would think to myself "AND YOU TEACH ON TOP OF THAT?!!" They would tell me that they had to produce a large amount of work to fulfill their contracts! How fucking miserable does that sound?!! Anyway, great informative video once again, guys!!!

I suggest entering local juried art shows and join your local artist guild if you want to go the gallery route. When you get noticed by other local artists you will start getting invitations to do group shows and galleries will start noticing you.
If you want to go the social media route, start a TH-cam channel, join online artist groups, start a website and Facebook page and Instagram. Make sure to use hashtags properly. Its all about getting a following.

Do you have to sell it to show it at a jury show?

    • @tinacolbourneart1091
      @tinacolbourneart1091 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@amberschade6185 No, sometimes they will ask the price of the piece so they can write it on the card that its for sale. But the main purpose of juried shows is getting ribbons and prizes, socializing with other artists and getting your art hung in public spaces. Most juried shows will hang in public for about a month.

The art world begins with the artist. When we give over our power to someone else, we are not in control. Don't become an egomaniac. But, don't be a doormat.
I have been in the galleries, and I have done the craft shows. The reality is, if you want to sell get in front of people. Don't worry about prestige, just do your work. I don't waste time trying to be the next big thing, I want to make that piece that my neighbor cannot live without. My neighbor is who I focus on.
Satisfaction comes from a job well completed, not from a system designed years ago before marketing was so accessable.

TRUTH. Because of covid I rediscovered art and was encouraged by way of social zoom meeting and stated painting LIVE at first for myself as the group was mostly musicians and poets, but THEY actually liked MY work and experiments and for six months watched me evolve. I hope to branch out some more. It was only when dropped the expectations about what an artist SHOULD be that I stopped the paralysis I felt. OK my work isn't f--ing Monet, or Sergant, or Carravaggio but it's me. Pls look for loitermanart on instagram. Only a few pieces but it's a humble beginning.

All I'd like is to sell enough to afford to make more art. So far without any sales it is getting tough. One piece costs me a minimum of $65 each to produce. I have dozens of these and a massive investment. Everyone seems love the artwork, but have a huge issue with paying $500 for a 48x48 inch piece. Kind of frustrated.

This is a great message, and it's important to understand that there's no gate-keeper in many of these fields. If you want to be an artist - go be an artist. Same for our baking business - when we decided to open a small bakery, we just did it. Granted we had built the business in markets so we knew what we needed to do before having a brick-and-mortar shop. Aside from getting all the necessary licensing and permits, we just did it.

Especially with social media at our fingertips, we can share every single day. And I love the part that Klee said about watching the journey, not an end product. My art is SO MUCH MORE than a product. It is a glimpse into my soul, and I am not afraid to share with others, regardless of where I am in my journey! Thanks again you two for all that you do!😘😘😘

The city I live in is very clicky & in the art world here even more so. It's been a struggle breaking into it & has kind of discourage me big time as an artist even working in a completely different field to make a living. I still try to just create art cos I love it.

    Dear Rafi,
I’m a 20 year old artist whose been struggling to “break into the art world”. I’ve felt so discouraged because I’m currently in college majoring in Art and my professors and overall curriculum interferes with my artistic vision more than it helps. I want to be independent and not be the conventional artist seen in galleries because they are selective and exclusionary, but I had no idea where to start or where to go. I’ve been watching so many of your videos yet never saw this one, oddly. Today, I finally watched it & when you said “you don’t need to break into the art world, you need to create your own world”, I literally started crying dramatically because of how beautifully said & inspirational that was. I’ve never thought of it that way or was never able to put in words, SIMPLY, what I needed to was trying to do. Maybe I was too afraid to even imagine it ? I’ve heard of manifesting your best life, and being the change you want to see in the universe, but there are many different universes within this world, one of those being the art universe. You’ve given me the courage to imagine and create my own art world within this universe. And for that, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for all of your honest, real, sincere, & genuine advice to the art community. 🥺✨✨

In a lot of ways it doesn't make sense to ruminate about it, but I do want rant for a second. It's very annoying that some people can go to certain recognized art schools ”Academies”, I suppose.
Then they graduate and they have art shows, that the schools set-up, where the schools invite rich benefactors that pay thousands 💰💰💰 for each painting giving the person 3/4 of their entire tuition up to their whole tuition in commissions, which the student didn't have to pay for because their parent’s paid for their whole tuition or most of their tuition.
Worse of all because this process has centuries of mileage the wall that it's built around itself and that ”Art World” is quite tall, dense and alive with instigators that guilt trip collectors behind the wall for even looking at and purchasing art outside the wall.
    Ok...rant done.

ImhotepTheGameLION These days the second most important point for going to art school is the connections that are made. Everyone you graduate with are inroad connections to the field you choose to go in. So it’s important to grow those connections. The first important point is the Monet that goes to the school!

“The Art World” is a CIA funded money laundering scheme! Unless you are in those elite circles, from an elite background, have “cache” that can be monetised ( see Brit Art 90s ) just forget it! The comicsgate industry has shown the way! Build your own audience and fans (youtube, social media) talk directly to them (live streams), and do crowdfunding and do live auctions and sales! Ethan Van Sciver has made over 1 million in crowdfunding for one comic, from just a few thousands of People. This channel needs to learn those lessons, and have live streams with other artists. As in comicsgate they all market and promote each other. It’s crucial that art TH-camrs like this channel connect with others and do live streams and combine audiences, and do live auctions. So please artists pay attention to comicsgate and learn how it’s done, without the Big gate keepers. The internet is a game changer and allows you do directly talk to buyers. The trick is simple. You need to build say, 2,000 fans via social media...talk directly to people who buy the art! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

I am still struggling to get my art online. It is getting there, but every time I turn around there seems to be another aspect to consider. So for now I am still local. Because the museum is closed and so is my representing gallery, I don't get to do artist in residence this year and well, there are no tourists this year anyway. So I approached the local furniture store. They were happy to have my art and give people my contact info when they are interested, I got some cool shots for mock ups, and it was nice to see what my art looks like with pretty new furniture. I have my November solo show in a popular local restaurant and each meal gets a free art card, with my info on the back. There are pop up Christmas stores here and I will have some smaller art there, and then we have a few local shops that are basically home treasure shops that are an eclectic mix that is just a pleasure to spend some time looking in and they have agreed to a variety of sizes of pieces. I might also run a contest near Christmas to start getting some emails. So many ways to get myself out there. Oh and did I mention a short dreamy video featuring my art pieces and what compels me to do the art I do. So many ideas. And of course that is part of why it isn't all done yet lol. Having someone help me get a foot in a door would be lovely, but I have found something much more important and that is what you and Klee offer, a kind of feeling of belonging and that I can do this. It truly brightens my day when I see that you have posted a video and that I now have a lunch or dinner date with you both. Thank you so much for helping me stay motivated. Love you two! It's a joy to listen to you. Good, solid advice. I went to college for art, and it was all about getting into a gallery, being in art shows. You were relying on the opinion of a select few, instructors or gallery directors to validate you as in artist I graduated in 2007, just as online opportunities were opening up for individual artists. So many platforms now to sell your art online. Love your common sense style, and especially love listening to Klee. Her voice is so uplifting.

Yes! Great video! Love you guys! It seems like the gates have been left wide open when it comes to breaking into the art world. You can represent yourself these days and get yourself out there to the public. When I stared you had to try to meet the "who's who crowd" and the people that were on the top of that list wore it with high pride and all the collectors followed their advice and recommendations. There were good artists waiting outside of the door who's art was amazingly better than what was on the walls of those so called best galleries of Art Basel. Well that one is 💯% controlled but there are many ways street artists like myself can make a career without getting in. I met a woman who had to start a gallery just to get her own art into Art Basel. I sell my art at markets and do well and wanted a lot of time before that trying to figure out how to get into Art Basel even though i was from those very streets. I even worked at a printing press shop before Wynwood was even started at age 18 Kaufman Press yet could not get in anywhere. But you can be an artist and make money and not have to waste all your time trying to make appointments. My art sold at markets but not while in line waiting to get in their doors.

Hey, brand new sub here. Pre pandemic I was selling my art very consistently by having open studio days and inviting a half dozen people for an intimate studio viewing. It worked well for me.
However, my husband's job moved us 3000miles away no support system or social circle. Starting over has been annoying quite frankly.
Since studio visits aren't currently an option for me. I'm wondering if you could suggest any reputable online auction houses, sites or social strategies. I haven't been on social media mostly because I wanted to increase productivity. Answering posts is very time consuming. Anyhow, if you have any tips for starting over in a new area or online auctions I would greatly appreciate it.

My first solo exhibition and debut was an amazing jump from where I was with my artist life. I’m now being sold with the top three percent, I’m hanging next to MichaelAngelo and Picasso now. It’s surreal especially how it took all this year since COVID delayed a lot, but the slow come up works well for me. My biggest obstacle now is the mixing of my low class life I’ve been raised on with the highest of classes at these art shows. It’s fun it really is, but it is a different reality for an artist. But my major thing was I had built a portfolio as my Instagram and then I had sent a dm to a well known high end gallery. And I was given a great opportunity for a representation with a well known art dealer and this gallery I had met. A tip for everybody but this is the best time to be an independent artist, even tho I’m aiming towards a representation but my longterm goal is to be an independent artist. Would love to talk to you more Rafi!

I'd rather break into a toxic waste dump - that is if there are any openings :)

You Said you don't have to sell your first born away lol. A painting I want to show at a juried art show is a painting of my husband and my first born lol can I show it, if it's not a saleable work? It's my best and shows my skills I poured everything into it. I want to show it but it's never going to be for sale....thoughts?

Yeah, what is the "art world" anyway? My art world is extremely different from the world's system of "art world"!

I've been around for a long time and come to the conclusion that "the art world" is 1 big scam gang. I know artists who deliver top work and have never had any interest. I am fortunate to have met extremely wealthy people by accident who often buy my work before it is finished. On the other hand, I often just give my art away when people like it but have no money. Being an artist is often not fun, especially if you cannot make a living from it. That's why I warn anyone who wants to become a full-time artist. DON'T DO IT IT'S A LOTTERY AND THERE ARE FEW PEOPLE TO WIN A PRIZE.

@@Rafiwashere I'm exaggerating, of course, to make it clear how difficult it can be. I also know many artists, friends who work hard and are very creative and know their craft well. They never or rarely sell their work and never exhibit in a gallery. The insidious thing is that high amounts are paid for selected art and many artists have this in mind. I myself exhibited 3 times in a gallery with my light objects, after which I sold everything from my studio. I don't see myself as particularly talented, lazy and don't do much to promote myself so I must have been extremely lucky to be able to retire at 55 years old. Now I walk through life dreaming and observing, buying art that I like and occasionally making a painting in my beloved mimimal art style. I think your TH-cam channel is very interesting and I think you are right, but I also know that the only thing that matters to be happy as an artist is that you make art because you can not resist and to live from it you mainly have to do a lot. to be lucky. www.peterpalm.nl

You wanna be an artist? You want a 4 year waiting list? You want to be featured on The Life of Rich and Famous Artists? A mere $1200 on Cameo gets you a shout out from your favorite Shark Tank shark, Mr Wonderful. No need to go places and pretend while sipping on drinks you don't like, all you do is fork the cash. $1200 too rich for you? There are plenty of long forgotten 80s and 90s stars for bargains!

Galleries have their place, but they aren't the ONLY space or place out there...cv19 is giving the old system a shake up and freeing artists up...woohooo
