You cannot forget that you have three of the best Bluegrass singers that ever lived behind Ralph on this song. Ricky Skaggs - tenor, Keith Whitley - bass and Roy Lee Centers - baritone. There is so much vocal talent and power collected on this song it is hard to comprehend.
I was raised in the Old Regular Baptist and this the way I like to hear my gospel! Almost Home was the first song I ever learned...you need to hear Ralph sing that one!
Ralph sings this like the Old Regular Baptist,my dads church which is much like Primitive Baptist. There will never be another like Ralph,I love you Ralph,Bless you for touching us~
I just want to say thank you for the song/video. I just found it on here and reminds me of listening to it years ago with my dad. He passed away back in June of 2009 and as I sit here balling my eyes out thinking of him and I sitting around passing a jar of shine back and forth. He cried couldn't hold back the tears when he heard this song. I know know why. I sure miss my ol man. He always called these type song tear jerkers. Thanks again. And keep em coming.
Thank you. I love the new and the old but the stuff like this makes my hair stand up. There will never be another sound like this. It cannot be duplicated. Ralph Stanley has a sound that will never be copied. Thank you
Thanks for the comments. I have listened to this recording probaly several hundred times and It still makes the hairs stand up on me. Thanks Dr,. Stanley for this wonderful and timeless recording.
Not even Christian but I am American & little proud on the Hill billy side. and this made me cry. But Messages from the Bone yard are going to reach out soul. Lovely song. Thank you. Peace Takes Practice. Rick Western slope Co. Wichita Ks.
The Blues is the Blues no matter who you are. I don't see the difference between this and Son House. Both are under appreciated. Both have have tremendous power. Love this.
SO gorgeous! If it's good when Dr. Ralph sings it solo, it's brilliant when it's done quartet style. Thanks so much for posting. They don't make music like this anymore.
Steelman, i listened to this song 3 times every day for 2 weeks just so i could get through it without crying so i could learn the harmonies. Thanks so much. The ancient sound really stirs the soul. God bless.
One of mom's favorite songs. There use to be several ministers in the Burning Springs, Mates Creek and Rock Springs Assocations of Old Baptist that were equal to Ralph.
I too was very fortunate to see Mr Ralph Stanley. I was young boy and I was able to play this banjo That is something I will never forget. This Song speaks volumes to a lot of people. I would have never dreamed when I put this video together that it would be viewed by so many people. Once again thank you for the kind comments. God bless
Don Baumann I couldn't agree more. When I was putting this together and when It came to the line of There I saw her spirit fading There was a accident with a piece of software I was using to get the effect that happened to give me the image that I did.. Go back and see the effect that the image has on that line. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for your comment. I am sorry for the loss of your Mom. I still have my mother but I know in the future I will be facing the same thing that you have recently went through with your loss.. And I am sure this song will then take on a whole new meaning. May God Bless you and your family. Steelman1963
Recorded 11 December 1971- Ralph Stanley, Roy Lee Centers, Keith Whitley, Ricky Skaggs, Jack Cooke, and Curly Ray Cline were at the session, but it is unlikely Curly Ray sang on this number.
This was revolutionary at the time - 1971 or thereabouts. The quartet is: Ralph, lead; Roy Lee Centers, baritone; Ricky Skaggs, tenor; Keith Whitley, bass (yes, a very young Keith singing bass; the kid had some range).
@CathyMae12345 Thank you for the comment I appreciate it. I was raised Baptist and this was the mountain music I cut my teeth on so to speak. Have you looked at the rest of my videos as well? Some are more modern Bluegrass but still GREAT music. Thanks for posting the kind words and God Bless.
Thanks for the comment. I want to make some more videos of Ralph Stanley just not sure what song I am looking for. Right now I am leaning towards the Drunken Driver just not sure yet. Keep checking back and I will have another one hopefully soon.
Ralph's singing sounded like it was from the most remote corner of the Appalachians.Compare the Carter family.Had a country mountain sound but not the same. The contrast is interesting to me.Both were great though.

This song is really moving. Ralph has done an amazing job during his lifetime with putting the true soul into gospel hymns like this one! 5 Stars+!

Ralph Stanley's Gospel songs and hymns are Blessed with comfort and joy unspeakable. Scarlet Purple Robe and One drop of water are in the Bible.
I was born and raised a Catholic, so I missed out on all of this great music! Please keep songs like this coming!

One of my favorite Ralph Stanley songs. Glad we had him around to preserve such mountain beauty. Look forward to singing this one with him in heaven.

Singing like we sang at Church when I was growing up in Eastern Kentucky
One of mom's favorite songs. There use to be several ministers in the Burning Springs, Mates Creek and Rock Springs Assocations of Old Baptist that were equal to Ralph.

Sure would be nice to have one of the song six more miles by Larry Sparks. Just a suggestion.

i def prefer him by himself
And Steeleman1963 is totally right....there will NEVER be another recreation of this. It simply cannot be duplicated.
Thanks for the comment. I want to make some more videos of Ralph Stanley just not sure what song I am looking for. Right now I am leaning towards the Drunken Driver just not sure yet.

I will see what I can do thanks.
