Hi, can you just go over your point about pentatonics fitting over caged chord shapes again please. Is there a pentatonic thst goes with the G Shape in CAGED but would hnot fit that well over the C shape using say, the E shape in the key of E?
The way you connect the dots to a lot of different-yet-related ideas without overwhelming the viewer is second to none on TH-cam. I get a lot of lightbulb moments watching your videos.
I knew if you made a video on CAGED I'd get more useful information than I would from many other TH-cam-videos, because you connect it to practice and to other theoretical concepts so that things just start clicking. :) I've been practicing the 5 pentatonic shapes and now I get to connect that whole thing with the CAGED shapes. Thank you, you do an awesome job and help out so much!
This may be the most well-organized, clearly communicated channel on these concepts I've come across. I've been hoping to find a single cohesive space to direct people who are wanting to learn more theory and application on TH-cam, and I think I've just found it. You've seemingly thought of everything, including how to direct people to other videos based on question or concept. Stellar work man
After watching hundreds of guitar videos and dozens of CAGED guitar videos this is the first video to explain how the caged chord shapes fit within each of the five pentatonic boxes. I didn't even know there was a connection. THANK YOU so much. So many of these concepts such as CAGED and pentatonic scales and arpeggios, and modes and triads are taught separately without understanding how it all connects. Please continue explaining how all these things connect or interact with each other. This video is really for advanced. players. I got lost when you spoke about adding in the other two notes of the major scale toward the end of the video. I have watched this video twice and will probably watch it two more times so as to digest all of the material you cover in this video. Once again, thank you. Craig Ewinger
One nice point of reference (of many) when learning this is that if you are playing the relative minor pentatonic scale of a major key on the low E string, the C shape of the major chord is what you’ll be playing. This helped me visualise my options as a beginner
This is the best teaching of chord shapes and pentatonic patterns /Diatonic scales that I've ever seen on the net. Well done. I'm definitely a fan. Well done, thank you
Andrew I have watched lessons from much "bigger" channels and you absolutely wipe the floor with them! You should be getting way more views, I can't believe I'm getting such clear information for free.
The knowledge, preparation, and ability to articulate concepts in your videos is top shelf. Thank you for being willing to put yourself out there and create valuable content!
Most of these paid lesson websites are claiming that TH-cam is not a great place to learn guitar, and this man is out here blowing people’s minds with this content.
Well done, young man. Working on getting caged, and triads under my fingers. Your explanation was clear, and concise. Really helped me out. Good health.
Your teaching style delivers concise and instantly usable playing tools for every level of beginner/hobbyist to - advanced guitarist in my opinion. Any finger exercises to strengthen my fingers would be super helpful or what do you do to workout your fingers before bar chording.
Haven't had a chance to watch it yet but judging from the comments, it sounds like it's going to be excellent!!! I will let you know and thank you once again!!!
Fun! I didn't know the pentatonic, i just knew the major because i play by ear. I've been finding new chord shapes up the neck, thinking I'm finding them - and here you are showing me chords and shapes i thought were ones i found! Duh...i didn't find anything new! But they were new to me, and my ear loves their sounds depending on the song. Now i see a pattern of connectedness i didn't see before - i only heard it. I don't want this approach to take the fun of of the mystery, but it helps me improve. I guess a good ear, and knowledge, are a better mix than just one or the other...
This is a great video lesson. This kid really knows his stuff. This was the first video I’ve seen of his but I think he’s a good teacher . I have been playing a long time and I am subscribing. I have no problem learning from someone who is young enough to be my kid. As long as he doesn’t start getting all cocky 😂
@@andrewclarkeguitar lol You’ll have to forgive me I was 30, thirty years ago. I do appreciate people sharing their knowledge freely online. Knowledge only available to those who could afford to pay when I was young. A real game changer and a beautiful thing.
Here’s EDCAG-7: you start on E, just like the guitar, and you use these 5 Dominant 7 shapes on the top 4 strings (DGBE). So E7, 2130; D7-shape, 2434; C7-shape, 6757; A7-shape, 9797; G7-shape, 999-10; and E7 again at the octave, 14-13-15-12. To those 5 shapes, associate increasingly more notes: 1-3-5-b7, 1-b3/3-5-b7, 1-b3/3-4-5-b7, then add b5-6-2 (one by one, in that order). Now you’ve associated Mixolydian combined with the Blues scale to those 5 shapes (1-2-b3/3-4-b5-5-6-b7). Even the last 3 of the 12 notes can be used in chromatic lines (b2-b6-7). - Please try this!
I did enjoy. Will need to watch at a later time when I'm not so exhaushed. A lot of info (good info, but this video will require some pausing, and practice. Thank you just the same.
Your lessons are awesome. Too bad that the high e is on the bottom of your fretboard diagrams, instead of the low E: like it is displayed in (almost) all courses and tabs. That would be way clearer for me. Or would it be possible to show both?
Personally I prefer the way Andrew does it. The diagram matches the video. The more conventional diagram works better when there is no video as it is looking from the player's perspective.
So I noticed you number your pentatonic scales differently than me and others from different videos , for instance your position 1 is my position 2 My 2 is your 3 3 (4) 4 (5) Does this make a difference?
Every class of yours is as good as the previous one, you do such a good job but I would like to add an observation if you just slowdown a bit the class would be more effective. I understand there is lot of material to put in one video and yet you would like more to say about it...remember you are talking to learners. Anyway, I still think you are a great teacher and you are helping so many of us that follow you.
It's just the way it works unfortunately. I realize it's a lot to take in. Position 3 of the Major Pentatonic scale sits over the standard open C major chord in the key of C major.
I learned guitar very different way. I consider myself in advance Guitarist and I never heard of the cage system. Of course, if you play an A chord on the fifth fret all the notes in A are around it are in the key of A. Isn’t it that simple? Every video I watch the cage system seems to make the fretboard more complicated. I appreciate this Video very much thank you for your knowledge. This is a great video. My issue is I can see the notes insides the CAGED shape than my finders are on. It’s the extra notes that are not under my fingers that throw me. Is that just a memorization exercise. The caged shapes are on three notes of the chord, but there are 4 other notes that seem to throw me. Any suggestion?
So I've been messing around with this for a while. Correct me if I'm wrong please. This would mean that if I want to solo to a song all I would have to do is find the key on the low e string. Then from that note start with the first pentatonic scale shape and mess around with the other positions in the solo
I am just getting started with the caged system. Why are 5 chord forms necessary? Each chord can be played by one formation..I'm not understanding the need for the other 4. Does it have to do with ease of access to specific scale and arpeggio shapes?
wait so im confused so with the pentatonic shapes is it just the same as the A pentatonic shape that can only be played or do we have to start at the pentatonic of the actual scale so lets say the D pentatonic is on the 10 th fret do we start there??im lost
A lot of shapes in pentatonic scales are the same they are just played in different positions of the fret board. For example look at em pentatonic scale and Am pentatonic. U have the same shape on the scales one is on the 5th position, (am pent) and the other is on the 12 fret -em pentatonic. They are the same for all scales - well mostly. The A major has the same shape as the Am and Em pentatonic but it starts on the second fret. Basically once you learn one shape it transfers over to other scales, and the same goes for other shapes.
The caged system sucks, its crappy barre chords and the way they are laid out, they can damage the hand. Avoid. i hate barre chords and power chords - yuk.

CAGED-AGEDC-GEDCA-EDCAG-DCAGE are the 5 possible orders. Add the b7 so that they’re all Dominant 7 and associate the Mixolydian scale to each shape.
So position 1 of the pentatonic in the D key would be the D shape and then build up from there or does it always start on the C shape? Thank you.
No, the pattern does not always start on C. You’re correct about D-shape being first in the key of D.

Yes. Within each chord shape you should memorize both the letter name and what interval it is (like b5, 2, #4, etc.).
