Considering how apathetic the staff of Springfield elementary are, Peyton feels like a breath of fresh air.

I actually love Peyton. Out of every teacher at that school, she seems to actually care for the children. She doesn't see Bart as a chaotic prankster, but as a troubled kid. She is the kind of teacher schools need to have.
That doesn't mean I don't miss Krabbapell. R.I.P Edna. We still miss you.

Which is a problem since the teachers are suppose to be as combative as the students.

Of course Edna will always be the best teacher for Bart but Peyton is also an amazing teacher in her own right and it is nice to see an adult who believes in Bart and wants to bring out his true potential. That is what a great teacher will do. They encourage their students to do their best and not give up if they fail at something and give them some motivation to try again. Peyton has good intentions for her students and won’t give up on any of them. That’s what makes her a great character. Her relationship with Bart isn’t as dynamic as Edna’s and she might not be as sassy but Peyton does teach Bart the valuable lesson that sometimes all you need in life is just one person who believes in you and wants you to succeed for your own benefit and not theirs.

I think Peyton is the perfect teacher for Bart in that, we finally have someone who at least tries to understand him.

I always thought given Apu's degree in education I thought he could be reintroduced as Bart's new teacher

that would be less stereotypical for Apu and could be a decent solution if combined with a new voice actor. I miss Apu.

She has a pleasant personality, but she’s not particularly memorable. In fact, I often forget she was introduced as a new recurring character. What makes her so forgettable in The Simpsons universe is that she’s mostly written as a regular, grounded person without any silly or wacky quirks. While Edna was also one of the more grounded characters, she had her unique laugh and distinct traits that helped her stand out from the crowd.

I mean, nobody can replace her.
    Or her voice actor.

my only questions about the character is whether or not her character feels like she belongs on the simpsons or Hey Arnold, there still has to be a combative element since humor derives from working off of and subverting negativity and having not seen the series in over 15 years at this point, I've no idea if this character is funny in her own right, or feels like a special episode that doesn't stop

I feel she works how she is supposed to. She is a minor, secondary character as Edna was meant to be. Only thing was that Edna had more time with Bart and they developed a cool dynamic that made her somewhat more memorable than other characters, and over time she (rightfully so) became a fan favourite, with amazing non-Bart storylines, scenes or even one-liners (she’s faking it). I think Peyton just hasn’t had the time nor effort put into her to make her as good as Edna, but still no matter how hard she does she will never be a childhood favourite as Edna is

The biggest problem with Ms. Peyton is that she has RIdICULOUSLY big shoes to fill replacing Edna.
Edna had like 25 years on the show to develop from minor secondary character, into one of the most fleshed out and beloved side characters in Springfield.
Ms. Peyton has only had 2 and a half years and a small handful of appearances so far. She's not going to feel like she truly "fits" yet, she's still new and the writers are still settling her in.
If you compare her to say Season 3 Edna they may not be THAT different in terms of how developed and fleshed out they are.
She's a little bland right now, but not a bad character. her tendency to get a little neurotic and put her foot in her mouth is A character quirk at least. Hopefully they keep building on her.
She's different to Edna, but that's a good thing, losing the dynamic Bart had with her is a shame, but this allows them to try new things and not tread on Edna's legacy
I'll always love Edna and be sad that she is gone. But I also FULLY welcome and embrace Rayshelle Peyton and really hope the writers will keep using her and develop her further so that if the show lasts another 20 years, maybe she will be just as well developed and rounded as Edna was, while also remaining her own character and not just Edna 2.0

Being fair its hard replacing an iconic character and voice actress and Peyton has never been bad in the little I've seen of her, but she is very boring. I hope she developes more of a personality rather than just a "nice lady" and has more stories focusing on her life and challenges. Edit: Okay the boring comment might be too harsh and I have hopes for the character!

I think Peyton is ok. It helps that she tries different methods with teaching, especially with Bart, from Edna. But I wouldn't care her a perfect successor yet.

I thought it would have been good if they moved up a grade and made Peyton Bart's 5th grade teacher

I agree that would have made sense, and easily explain why Edna isn’t there. Also it would help to explain Bart’s essentially maturing that little bit more.

It is impossible to follow up with any character , the way the Simpsons is set up today it’s solely focused on the family and less on secondary characters

Not having seen "The Simpsons" in more than 20 years, and then nothing past maybe season 8, I have no concept of how it's evolved. (I read somewhere someone's opinion that "At least 'Gunsmoke' was still funny after its tenth season.") It sounds like Peyton is a warmer, more caring character than the wonderfully acerbic Edna Krabapple ("Grade School Confidential" is possibly my favorite episode), which means the show's satiric edge has been blunted at least that much. But it was probably a wiser choice than trying to find a replacement voice for the irreplaceable Marcia Wallace.

Peyton is a decent teacher for Bart but no one could replace Edna she was the perfect foil to Bart int be early seasons and she helped Ned out of his shell and less of a religion pushy character
