Loved your discussion. I'm reading Malazan for the first time. Just started House of Chains. Loving the series so far and love deadhouse gates.
I do vehemently disagree that Mappo and Icarium are not that interesting in this book. What you call a touristy travel across ruins is an interesting way to learn about the world, the continent and icarium and each next scene deepens and further explores their relationship. Erikson uses the changing surroundings (ruins, Iskaral, Fiddlers group) for us to get to know this fascinating pair.

Glad you enjoyed the discussion! I agree with you with Mappo and Icarium, but I think the conversation moved to another topic before I really talked much about them. I was intrigued by the pairing of the two.

The internal struggle of Mappo and his feelings for Icarium that he himself couldn't understand, his feeling of betrayal for his friend, his conflict between friendship and duty, that was what made this book favorite for me. I absolutely loved them in this book itself. Also Icarium understanding what his friend is going through, knowing about his condition and still not hating Mappo, rather urging him to let the Azath take him, was a beautiful moment.

It's so interesting that y'all didn't connect with Mappo and Icarium in this book. I absolutely LOVED THEM when I first got to them. Maybe it's because I had no expectations, since I hadn't heard anyone say anything about them, but I genuinely adored their storyline. It's one of the best things of Deadhouse Gates, to me (and I thought that since I read the book, and I haven't finished the series yet, so I'm not saying it in hindsight). I loved trying to piece together Mappo's motivations and what he was hiding, and also his internal struggle and his relationship with Icarium in general

I think I connected with them more than the rest of the panel.

    I kinda finished this book
I have mixed feelings about it
It felt like Erickson cramped too much in one book
    Some sequences are awesome though
    But a few unnecessary moments
The prose is not the best, gotm had better prose imo

If I was to give advice going into future books it would be to generally ignore noise around said book e.g. how everyone always says going in that DG has a heartbreaking ending, I was told X book was the worst in the series and it randomly by chance is my favourite peice of media in general. Granted I will say that I am incredibly excited for you guys to read memories of ice, especially your book vlog.

I’m glad I finally got to watch this and am very sad I missed it live. I agreed with sooo much said here, especially about Mappo and Icarium 😅 one thing I’d say about Felisin being a boy in this case - if the story didn’t change, I think the character would be just as hated. When men are abused in that way it’s often seen as “weak”. Felisin sucks cause she’s mean 😂

Say one thing about Felisin is that she definitely inspires discussion! I initially had empathy for her, but then she was just downright mean to everyone and I just found her beyond insufferable. And then she takes on that orphan at the end.... a pretty complex character journey if you think about it. But I do agree with what you said in your video that I felt intellectually I wanted to have empathy for her more than I actually felt it.

Compassion is empathised so much when pitching Malazan that I go out of my way to not mention it when I pitch it to people. I just pitch it as "its about a sprawling empire and its role and impact on two continents while coming into contact with a third"

Loved the discussion. Waiting for Memories of Ice. I know Phillip will be the guest in one of these, in that case its best for House of Chains. Phillip's perspective is best for House of Chains.
