Buddhist Monks - Who Are They and What Do They Do?

  • Buddhist monks are known to have a shroud of mystery around them. They are secluded, invisible, and hidden from most of the world. This short documentary was my attempt to give you a brief glimpse into the life of a monk and behind the scene of the monastery.
The monk's life may not be understood by many so hopefully, this video will you an exclusive look into our world. It will answer questions as to why we do the things we do, what we ordain, and how to train ourselves.
Speaking from first-hand experience, the monk training and monk's life is not easy, self-development is not easy and making a commitment to a disciplined practice is not easy. But with that said, each day we continue to make a choice to pursue this path.
I hope you enjoy this video and please feel free to leave your thoughts below. Would love to hear from you :)

Jesus is so amazing, teaching us to go out and spread the word about living a good life, and to live our best life in being there for each other. These monks seem like good folks, but what the heck are they doing for each other and the world? That's what's missing in this lifestyle and doing stuff for others is a huge part of who I am.

Joining the Army forces you to leave your family, passions, hopes, and dreams behind as well. I have met people from all over the world in the Army. And as you can see in this video these monks come from all over the world too. For both, the Army and Buddhist monks I think anyone can do it. They both just require training. In my opinion, being a monk is easier since it's all about peace instead of violence. And naturally, most of us long for tranquility. You're becoming one with yourself and I feel like if each of us didn't have so many distractions and needs this is actually quite natural to become like this. We all yearn for some type of fulfillment and most of us would consider ourselves spiritual in a way. In reality, we are forced to have to provide for ourselves and our families and work until the end of our days kind of like the laypeople in the video. These monks are blessed they have the villagers taking care of them and providing all of their material needs. This makes focussing only on your spirituality quite easy when they wipe out almost all distractions and physical needs of life. I do have a problem with how fresh, clean, and well-tooken care these monks look while the villagers giving them all they have looked quite poor. Also in comparison with how developed the monk's infrastructure is to how the shacks the villagers live in, it seems wrong. Being a monk is not impossible and again anyone can do it if they have the will and when in the perfect circumstances like these guys. These men are no different than you or me or those villagers because we are all human. It does not seem right to me that hardworking laypeople lay at their feet and worship them almost as if they are the gatekeeper to their own faiths/karma. This type of training is rewarding for the self though and I'm sure opens a great door to the growth of your own spirituality.
Focussing only on mediation and spirituality offers a great reward to the individual in which they reach enlightenment and feel a great sense of freedom. However, this does not make them better than anyone else or more hierarchal than the poorest man. We are all still meek humans who need something greater than ourselves to reach Nirvana. And that "something" cannot be found in even the most disciplined human monk. It is found in the true God.

@@desireechoate7583 I recommend that you read the autobiography of lee dhammadaro a Buddhist monk of the Thai tradition, that way you can see how the monk lifestyle is not as easy as you perceive it, it is extremely hard to be a monk in an Any place you are, and you shouldn't compare them to soldiers, monk are trained to attain peace, love compassion stillness of the mind- body and liberation of suffering, soldiers are made to destroy, the only create bad for themselves and others. Also people is not required to feed or donate to monks, thay do it voluntarily because they appreciate the monks and their wisdom.

While I will acknowledge that it's a struggle. Going against the tide always is, however, if one is to engage in the struggle, the first step is motivation. Your motivation has to be at least equal to the dream and the passion. If it's not, you are wasting your time. Secondly, you must take an honest assessment of the passion and the dream. Do you honestly think that they will eliminate all craving and suffering or just cover them up? What I have found about us is that we are never satisfied. No matter how good we may have it, we are never satisfied, at least not for long. Just something to think about.

That is truly a powerful statement that you make: "When the mind is outside of the body, it becomes vulnerable." So very true!
I have the Dhammapada and have read it several times, even memorized and recite verses to myself for mental focus. My point is your statement that I quoted reminded me of one particular verse: "What we see, hear, and taste, become the master." The longer that I live, the more that I realize how important this is to our well-being.

When 3 days hit , for a week I was stress free I didn't feel like I was obligated, forced to abide by my children's rules. I felt more understanding, patient, you name it. I listened to meditation music before sleep and during the day closing my mind and trekking myself positive things, saying "I am safe" "I am secure", "I am beautiful", "all negativity is out of this room"

I do have a problem with how fresh, clean, and well-taken care these monks look while the villagers giving them all they have looked quite poor.

Oh wonderful. Congratulations on that teaching position. That's a lot of merits to teach the monks.
My advice is to go with no explanation and have an open attitude. Sometimes we bring our own culture and perspectives, then we compare. Try not to do that because you are now going into the spiritual world. What they do will boy make sense logically because it's not supposed to. So just stay open.
Develop your meditation practice and observe everything around you. Through the act of skillful observation, you can learn alot. Its like watching a master class on life 😁

Leaving home and obey the rules is the way to find true ourselves. My grandparents are Buddhists, for some policy reasons they don't leave home, but we behave kindness and believe goodness.
I'm from Mainland China, though Buddism here are a little different from Tailand, we share the same belief that cause-and-effect really works and achieve oneself is most of us final goals, For Chinese Buddhism Monks, they may also find the way to help the others and the world. So just respect each other.
However, modern days, it's too hard to find a real sense of temple and monk in China, cuz most of the temples are transformed into tourist attractions and monks behave just like sellers. This is another reason why I totally respect you. Persist in the belief is a difficult thing but sometimes to give up is even harder. So just keep what we are doing, and maybe one day I come toTailand, we can witness the greatness we have already done.
By the way, meditation is a so wonderful method.

I wish more Buddhist Monks would go out into the world and teach their teachings…especially in prisons, where people who lost their way and could be helped…staying in a Monastery does not seem like it helps humanity a lot…🤫That said, I do follow it’s philosophy as much as I can..and I think, it is the only way to live!

I’m a Catholic men in Formation for Religious Life in an active Congregation. Prayer and work is fundamental to reach our Mission. Buddhist Monks, Christian Orthodox and Catholic Monks are people I admire for their style of life and although I’m not called to live a contemplative life, I practice Contemplative and meditative Prayer a lot.

So this is my testimony about getting back into the church after 10 years of being out of it. For awhile I was an atheist and then an agnostic, however, God delivered me out of a difficult and strange period of my life that left me without doubt of His existence and goodness.
It's a bit of a long read, so bear with me.
A couple weeks into February of 2018 I experienced some dreams of a strange nature during a time where I was isolated, depressed, and desperate. I've dealt with anxiety and depression for along time and I was at the end of my rope. I had considered seriously commiting suicide two years ago and when the depression hit this time I couldn't take it anymore. I was searching desperately for something that would allow me to leave the situation I was in.
I was addicted to gaming and was very isolated. I also fell heavily into a series of books I was re-reading at the time that I had a great obsession with, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
A few months into a reread of this series I had a dreams in February 2018 one of which I think was prophetic, having to do with seeing a woman and man in the dream that I later saw the next day while walking and while watching TV. This was a man and woman that I hadn't met or seen before. There were also aspects of the dreams (which I can't easily get into because it's difficult to explain due to the content) that led me to believe that The Dark Tower series having to do with parallel universes was real.
I became convinced that there was a world parallel to ours, like the books, that I could gain access to if I used certain objects that I had in my possession . After weird events also began occuring in my home, with my television, and with me, I told my parents about all of it.
They were adamant that what I was experiencing was demonic deception and that I should cease reading these books and give myself over to God.
Being stubborn and delusional I decided to continue in what I thought was a great discovery and a way out of my situation.
Events transpired over the next few days that left me in a state of confusion and despair. My father also ended up in the hospital that week. It wasn't until I began to cry out to Jesus that things began to change. I began to hear from God during this time. I felt like I should rid myself of the books as well as the stuff I had gathered connected to them.
I eventually ended up getting rid of all the books and objects connected to them, as well as a lot of other stuff including my games. We were doing some work in my room at the time so luckily I had something to help keep my mind off what had been happening as well as grow in the word from listening to 107.9 on my radio.
When we finally returned to church a couple weeks later the sermon and series was about the book of Daniel, some of which has to do with prophetic dreams and visions among other things. I know now that this wasn't a coincidence.
Once I started getting involved in the church again and reading the Bible I found out that these things really aren't as uncommon or unbelievable as they seem. My mens bible study at the time had members that had experienced supernatural and amazing things as well
I know this isn't going to sound credible if you aren't a Christian. Back when I didn't believe, these stories didn't seem compelling or true to me. However I can tell you that if you reach out to God wholeheartedly he will reveal himself to you.
I'd like to ask that if you're going through something right now, some kind of challenge or difficulty that you reach out to God and ask him to help you. Sometimes it may not seem like anything is happening, but if you're willing to hold on and push through you can see him move in your situation in miraculous ways.
Here's more about the Gospel here:
    www.tvcresources.net/resource-library/articles/the-gospel-of-jesus-christ
If any of you would like to receive or feel led to receive Jesus Christ as your saviour pray this and believe it with all your heart. ❤️
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and there is nothing that I can do to save myself. I confess my complete helplessness to forgive my own sin or to work my way to heaven. At this moment I trust Christ alone as the One who bore my sin when He died on the cross. I believe that He did all that will ever be necessary for me to stand in your holy presence. I thank you that Christ was raised from the dead as a guarantee of my own resurrection. As best as I can, I now transfer my trust to Him. I am grateful that He has promised to receive me despite my many sins and failures. Father, I take you at your word. I thank you that I can face death now that you are my Savior. Thank you for the assurance that you will walk with me through the deep valley. Thank you for hearing this prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Good luck and may God bless you! And remember satan is a spirit of fear.

Really great inspiration. The islamic religion commands to have a balance in life, which is to work but you have to spend some time alone to pray and meditate every day. Not working all day, and not praying all day. Unfortunately, a lot of muslims are not aware of the importance of balance. A human has to spend some time alone to develop his spirit.

I am a Buddhist. I don't go to temple because I have to work 362 or 363 days per year no ifs and buts. I am kind to people in the street. I help people in the street whenever possible, give money, food, push the car, give a jump start. I can't just drive away and feel guilty later on. Buddhism is about love and compassion, but I have seen too many people try to show off how much money they have donate to the temple and brags about it. I hate to surround myself with those kind of people. Like an old word says, "it is better to have salt and rice rather than feast with those unkind-heart people. I have led my life with love and compassion. Now I have been become a vegan almost the whole year. First for health reason, now it is for animal sake. Animals have to go through great suffering just to give us life and pleasure. No. We don't need meat to keep us alive. Chinese monks never eat meat. Why Thai, Cambodian, and Laosian monks eat meat. Before we had not known, now the damn whole world start to have go vegan for the sake of the animal, planet earth, and health. Show love and compassion in action not in words. When stop eating meat and start to meditate, you will feel the different in your heart. Your love and compassion have amplified tremendously. Please try to convince those monks to stop eat meat. Or cut down meat. Please wake up, most of the Western world start to move to veganism, compassion eating. When will you start to wake up. By the way, I am Cambodian who just start to become a vegan. Many people criticize me for not going to church or temple. All I ask them, how often have you stopped and give food, water, or money to the poor in the street, or push the car, or give a jump start. The answer is why should we give them money to those homeless guys. They will use the money for drugs or alcohol. That is the excuse from those rich people. I remember one cold morning I am a baker in a donut shop. I saw a black guy walking bear feet, and no shirt on. He tremble and could hardly walk due to being freezing outside. Being black and having tattoos all over the body is a very bad combination. I walked to the bathroom and took off my shirt and give to him, explaining to him that it was my favorite shirt so that he did not feet uncomfortable wearing a stranger shirt, another white customer walked in and saw me give the shirtless guy a shirt, a cup of coffee, and a big donut. To my surprise the white guy took off his shoes and gave those shoes the black guy and walk bear feet to his car. Let stop and ask. Had I not given my shirt to the black guy, and feel uncomfortable and prejudice around that shirtless with tattoos all over his body, I bet the white guy might had felt the same, prejudice, toward that poor guy. Anyway, too many stories to tell. Let be kind to every kinds. Love others rich or poor, black or white, human or animals. How can we be kind to animals__stop eating them and stop support the cruelty the meat and diary industry have inflict pain and suffer to those innocent animals. Those monks should never eat meat the first place. Where is love and compassion when a buddhist support the suffering of others so that he can have pleasure on his or her taste bud. Hate me all you want buddhist people.

"masters of oversaturation"- What I have learned regarding this skill is that what is, is, even though we wish it wasn't. Our unwillingness to accept this will open us to a lot of suffering that could be avoided.
