Oh dear, this provides some unpleasant perspective wrt lack of growth and innovation, deficits and debt, bubbles, and serious shortcomings of political systems. Nothing has improved in nine years, on the contrary. Peter Thiel is one of those next level thinkers that provide insight that no basic level thinker can. For that, I thank you for the upload!

Peter is a smart Guy, how he can't see that 1) to make progress in the world of bits at current stage of development is much easier than for example in the area of transportation 2) even in the area of transportation we did a lot of progress: you have to calculate not an average speed of a car or a plane , but the average speed multiplied with the number of persons/loads transported every year.

Alerxander Andrush is 100% right. It's much easier to get into the world of bits rather than dealing with the physical stuff. The same thing applies to the financial industry.
The easy money is in the world of bits and in the financial industry. Everything else is much harder and thus riskier.
Advances in transportation are neglected, because budgets don't calculate based on things like infrastructure, improvements in education, healthcare or ANYTHING that benefits the needs of society.
Investment in our "financialized" economy is going to the development of weapons, data harvesting and surveillance technology.
Our preoccupation with being the hegemon instead of considering cooperation, has led us into a state of permanent war. Funding "friendly" nations in their conflicts and sanctioning those we perceive a threat has proved disastrous. Without becoming overly Nationalistic, America needs to move away from globalization, rebuild our manufacturing base and put our citizens back to work.
