Why ? Because of the leeches ? I thought it looked like a beautiful area. I've camped in the Rangeley, Maine and over the border in Errol, NH many times. It's a beautiful and quiet place to go. The AT crosses Rte 17 (I recognized it when they crossed it) where it's called the Height of the Land. Beautiful viewpoint of Rangeley Lake. I've also seen some moose in that area. They may get lucky and see one, especially being in the woods on the trail.
@@djg5950 I don’t like swimming in lakes lol. Leeches bother me yes, but I really dislike the grasses on the bottom tickling my feet when I’m swimming etc. It’s from my childhood and irrational I know, but it freaks me out!
@@gratefulhikes Shallow ponds where the grasses grow is a favorite food source for moose. This pond looked too big but I'd definitely check area ponds for moose early in the am. I've never been aware of the grass but don't like the mucky, leaf litter bottom at some ponds. Also don't like ones with a lot of small rocks on the bottom. That feels uncomfortable on my feet. Not much of a swimmer but I will say that sandy bottom was what attracted me. Ever had tiny minnows nibble the dead skin off your toes ? That is what tickles me. Bringing up the grasses reminded me of that, LOL.

@S M They are called wet suits not dry suits. Maybe different in Africa ? I wasn't sure what you meant either. And yes, they are in ponds with clearer water. Maybe the water temp has a lot to do with it ? They like the leaf litter that is in shallow sections where the water is undisturbed. Where it's so shallow the water probably warms up fast. I remember when I was about 10 and we were camping at a pond in NH and I got a leech on me. Grossed me out and I never forgot it. Don't like them and that would have gotten me out of the pond in a hurry, too. It had a nice beach area and I would have camped there if it was secluded and not near a major road.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I'll have to check out that town. Not sure if I've ever been there but been to the Rangeley area many times. It's a beautiful area and less crowded than the Greenville area.
@@djg5950 Actually, it's not a town. It's the name of an old railroad siding. I just found it on the topographic map. The mountain range is also named Bemis.
@@spectrum10 Ok. I use Summit Post to roughly follow her day's mileage. Problem is that's it's been a while since they updated the info and the mileage is somewhere around 14.4 off (in the negative). I look for shelters or campsites to figure out where they will stay (best guess). I saw Bemis Mountain on that site. I could pull out my Delorme topo of Maine and look closer at the area. I have the whole AT highlighted on those maps. I have Delorme topo maps (old ones - not newer updated ones) of about 15 to 20 states. I used them when I traveled a lot to look for old roads, ponds, camping areas, trails, etc. to visit out of the way places. I've been to Rangeley (camped there) probably 5 or 6 times and I'm familiar with that area. Mostly taking fall foliage photos and looking for moose. She's not the only one I've followed on a thru hike. It's a kind of a hobby for me to see how well they do and how they do in Maine and NH (the hardest two states).
BTW. I have topos of Me., NH, Vt, Mass, Va, Tn, and NC for states that the AT runs through. Most I bought in the late 1990s. They don't change much unless a state has done a lot of construction work (highway by passes and malls built near small towns).
@@djg5950 Do you make use of aerial photography as you monitor the hiker's progress? The route of the AT is visible on many of the mountain ridges because the bog bridges are readily discernable from the air. You can see the rooftops of some of the shelters if they are not obscured by trees.
It might be fun to give Stretch one of your day's postings. Let him do the entire narration for the day and post that. Just for fun. We came for you, but if he tells us what is up with you it would be a fun episode. Thoughts?
A couple of times there have been shots of Stretch vlogging on his phone. I would love to see hime post his own vlogs about the journey after they finish the trail. It would be fun to follow them all over again, this time from Stretch's point of view.

@CGull They have to be close. Summitting this weekend ? Maybe Mon. ? Monday's weather is going to be hot. Chance of a thunderstorm 20% daytime. Tues. 90% chance of a t-storm. Sunday's weather looks like the best day; 80's sunny. Saturday (today) is chance of a thunderstorm 50%. Clouds gather over the higher peaks very quickly and that's where the t-storms are mostly. Don't want to be high on a mountain when one rolls through. Several hikers found that out already in northern Tn. (just before Damascus, Va.) this spring. A couple (see Hawk for one) got catch in severe storms and it wasn't fun. I predict that they'll reach Baxter Mon. the 21st but wait a day (Tues.) because of storms. Summit Wed. June 23rd. Clear and 71* for a high. Perfect day to summit.
@CGull I think they are still in the 100 Mile Wilderness. That's bad enough if storms are rolling through. Either way no matter exactly where they are right now the next few days will be exciting to see how hikers fare the peaks during these storms. Things are going to get interesting in her final days on trail. Sadly we have to wait a whole week to watch them. There are a few Vlogger in that area. Watching the hair raising weather and see the storms approaching are my favorite videos (mostly because I'm safe at home and I know they survived because they posted their videos).
I'm just going to say it. And probably not for the last time. Your fiance was okay with you walking for about 4 months without him, so he can roll dice. I know nothing of your relationship otherwise, but I can see the chemistry between you and Stretch. You may notice him get grumpy real soon as he realizes he has to let you go once you reach Katahdin. (I wonder if that's where the water purifier got its name.) How are you going to feel? I'm reminded of the movie, "The Notebook." Think long and hard before you let him walk away. And now that I've (very probably) pissed you off, you inspired me to try hiking. I did the Virginia triple crown. I followed your very bad example and slept at McAfee Knob. I did about 15 miles each day, pack weighed about 35 pounds. I overdid it and could barely walk on the third day, but drove south to Grayson Highlands and enjoyed the park. I will build out a lightweight pack (less than 25 lbs including food and water and go for a longer hike in the fall. Thank you. I will miss your daily updates. You are a special treasure.
