I first saw Muddy Waters as a Junior at Reed College in Portland Ore in the fall of '68. I didn't really know who he was, listening to Motown and Jazz in those days. He pulled up to the Student Union in a brand new maroon Fleetwood Cadillac, and stepped out in a mink coat. He and the band turned the Joint out that night. He was READY. Ready as anybody could be. I caught him in Seattle in the 70s and 80s once with Bonnie Raitt in the 70s. He was a master at his craft and "rocked" every house I ever saw him in.
72 and been listening to him for 55 years, still makes me cry at every word he sings

I don't get the tears but I do get chills during different elements of the band's performance. Similar to the type of chills you get during a powerful Sunday Service. Such a soulful sound!!

We are fortunate to have this recording. We have France to thank for that. Very doubtful it would have been professionally recorded in the States.

So great to hear all the great comments Muddy was the man,to have seen him and his bands through the years is something that will never leave you his impact was that strong.His energy is contagious a class blues man they called him Mississippi Muddy Waters for a reason everyone new Muddy was in town in New Orleans the neutral ground were filled with cars to get a glimpse of the man at Titian’s his favorite place to play.
Without blues singers like this rock would’ve never existed. True legends of their time.

My older brother took me into NYC to hear Muddy in 1967 for my 16th birthday...the Blues Bag at the Cafe Au GoGo. Muddy's band owned the show, even though The Blues Project was headliner, reprising their recording made the prior year. I caught Muddy at least a half dozen more times in the late 60s and early 70s. This show is right up with the best I heard...maybe better. Truly thanks for posting!

This is my favorite lineup of Muddys band with Jerry and Cotton being equally desired!! I'm so glad that I got to see him in 82 I think it was. A club called Rogues in Virginia Beach,Virginia. RIP--- Muddy ❤

That VOICE nobody could come near to that " Born to sing blues " only way I can say it .I want to tell u somn' bout the man. Muddy Waters. Back in 70s' in a club in Santa Cruz California my " baby brother " had been playin blues harp since 9 yrs. old, approached Muddy my brother was 17 at time, band was in back room on break n my brother got back there somehow n asked Muddy if he could play a set. Muddy reared back laughing said " Well let's see what ya got son". Well he did well n Muddy said " Kid this gonna be yo night, sure you can play a couple sets" What a kind gesture give a youngster a chance like that, I love Muddy McKinley Morganfield Waters for that, only one I remember was "Caledonia" My brother says he looked at Muddy while they were playin' ta see how he was doin, n said that big round beautiful face was smiling at him gave him a nod Muddy told him " stick with it son you're a bluesman " Man what a memory!!! You can hear my bro on utube under "Johnny Long at SF Wharf" playin on street of San Francisco with Edwin or Les Edwins, drummer . Kindly give it a listen n let me know here or under his video. His wife filmed it but dropped camera a few secs. but its good all the same . Thanks Im proud of this experience and he plays clubs around Frisco, I got him going with blues when I was rhythm guitarist. Muddy is the greatest bluesman in my humble opinion it's hard to imagine anybody could beat him, yet he would talk about others like BB King as tho he truly admired him & his music, Muddy never forgot where he come from. 😯

What a performance by Muddy and the band. I'm glad someone recorded it. Some folks sound good in the studio and sound like crap live cause they lack talent. Muddy sounded good on recordings and even better live. The man and his bandmates were dripping with talent. The French got a one off nice treat....and recorded it!

I'm 72. I've been playing 3 hou4r solo shows for years (except right now during the pandemic). I find it very easy, because it's totally about the love I have for performing, and for my crowd.

Yep. I'm 71 now... : ) Back in the '60's my first love loved Muddy, and I found that the Delta blues captured me - hook, line and sinker. Love it all - Texas, Chicago, delta....
This is probably the best recording of Jerry Portnoy I've ever heard. He's absolutely killing here.

Agreed. The great Pinetop Perkins killing it too. Muddy always had excellent musicians, including some of the greatest harp players of all time, including Jacobs, Horton, Cotton, George Smith, Portnoy, Buford and Oscher.
