  • A very enjoyable couple of hours spent at Peterborough on the East Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from London North Eastern Railway, Thameslink, East Midlands Railway, Cross Country, Greater Anglia, Grand Central, Hull Trains, Lumo and freight from GBRF and DC Rail.
    This wasn't the original station to be found at Peterborough. In 1845 Peterborough East was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway with their line running from Ely to Peterborough and the line running from Peterborough to Northampton which now forms part of the Nene Valleyn Railway heritage line. The line from Northampton to Peterborough was built by the London and Birmingham Railway. In 1846 there was another line built going from Syston to Peterborough. In 1862 the Eastern Counties Railway became a part of the Great Eastern Railway.
    Two years later the Great Northern Railway arrived on the scene when the opened up their portion of the line going from Peterborough, Spalding, Boston and Lincoln, when the line was being constructed their trains from London were using the ECR station at Peterborough East but was decided fairly on that they would need their own station. This was officially opened in 1850, two years before Kings Cross was named as the official terminus of the East Coast Mainline.
    Peterborough East was closed in 1966 and Peterborough North was renamed for a second time to Peterborough which is now the current station.
    The station went through several stages of modernisation where the line was electrified to having more platforms built to deal with the ever increasing demand in traffic aswell as having holding lines for freight passing through the station.
    My next station will be Didcot Parkway on the Great Western Mainline.

    Peterborough is 77 miles from Kings Cross and 317 miles from Edinburgh. Brighton is 135 miles from Peterborough by Thameslink. I think you’d be lucky if you caught sight of the new Lumo trains between Kings Cross and Edinburgh via Morpeth, Newcastle and Stevenage. I used to believe all trains on the East Coast Mainline between Kings Cross and Edinburgh stopped at York. However the weekday 5:40 AM LNER Flying Scotsman from Edinburgh stops at Newcastle and passes slowly through York. Lumo currently do twice daily services between Kings Cross and Edinburgh and will increase it to 5 daily services. The Lumo services slowly pass through York. There are huge potential in pax market and routes for LNER in future expansion. Huddersfield and Middlesbrough have been talked about for new LNER services. I’ve stated Dundee and Perth for new terminating LNER services. Also consider the continuation of the Borders Railway from the current Tweedbank Terminus. A spur can be added which would connect Tweedbank with Melrose and to Newcastle Airport and Gateshead Metro Centre. Maybe LNER can add services to Tweedbank, Melrose and Gateshead Metro Centre via Edinburgh. By the way, I’m going to Bournemouth on Thursday December 30, 2021. I’m doing a day trip there. I’ve booked and collected my train tickets with South Western Railway. I’m going on the 7:35 AM South Western Railway service from London Waterloo to Bournemouth where I’ll end my journey at 9:42 AM. This service continues to Poole. Wish me luck.

    First went through here in 1962 on a railway special hauled by the Flying Scotsman on the way to York, stopped here & Doncaster, just the two platforms then and masses of sidings, its even changed from when we moved here in 79.
    Excellent upload, very enjoyable.

    An excellent video from Peterborough on the East Coast Mainline even if there wasn't too much freight on offer! Good catch of the Lumo class 803 and wherever you got Lumos from must have been from Harry Potter of all things! Perhaps it was good day to cast Lumos then! Interesting to see a 156 operating from Norwich and I'll have to say that 91111 and 91119 are superb 91's! If only the Flying Scotsman 91 of 91101 was with the Flying Scotswoman DVT of 82205 though! Well still a great pairing on a 225 set nonetheless, eight cars in this particular case instead of the usual nine! We do indeed need a full Intercity swallow set back on the Mainline now! Perhaps unusual seeing a five car Azuma on the Leeds runs! Great acceleration from them it must be said and the same with the one 755 Stadler Flirt too! Shame no 700's turned up but I suppose there is always next time! Another funny bit was the mentioning of the Cross Country 170 to Edinburgh! Chalk that one up to poor planning eh! Cross Country do serve Edinburgh but with the Voyagers and Super Voyagers that are the class 220's and 221's and also the HST's too, speaking of which Peterborough looks much changed without the HST's themselves and also the class 365's. Even without them the variety is still decent, which was still certainly on offer! Great colour scheme on the Azumas and 158774 in its interim East Midlands Regional livery it must be said! Looking forward to Didcot Parkway next on the Great Western Mainline, more particularly because I was at the Sonning Road Overbridge last week on the Saturday on that line as we were visiting our grandparents although sadly no freight turned up! I'll keep the fingers crossed for the Didcot Parkway video then! I have also finally figured out why Carlisle wasn't next on the list and it just had to be the weather didn't it! Well better luck next time eh!? As the saying goes, 'Rain, rain, go away! Come again another day!'

      Peterborough has always been an amazing station to come to. Every year that I have been here there was always something unique to see, in this instance is was the DCR Class 60 working the sand train from Kings Lynn. It is nice still seeing the 225 sets running around as they do have a real sense of character about them.

Mind you, you mentioned Edinburgh for the service to some extent it must be said! It must have been the LNER Azuma going from Edinburgh that must have forced you into a rethink about the Cross Country service! Still a funny bit nonetheless! 😂

    I honestly don't understand why the likes of HullTrains, Lumo and Grand Central don't just merge, like wouldn't it just be logistically easier for the ECML to have 2 companies maybe 3 if Grand Central don't want to merge with anyone to run services to Hull as well as Edinburgh, especially since both Hulltrains and Lumo both use 800 variants? Or why doesn't LNER just do what Virgin did with the WCML, claim it as their own and buy out the competition basically? Anyone know why that isn't the case?

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatlonewolfguy2878 I can see where you're coming from. I would have to talk to someone from either company to see if that sort of thing would actually work. But then you just have to look at what the OAO (Open Access Operators) are doing, they are serving towns and cities that LNER only very rarely stop at, and even more so that LNER have stopped serving a lot of the intermediate towns in between Newcastle and Edinburgh which is why TPE (Transpennine Express) and LUMO have increased what they are doing up that end of the world.
