Sang this song at my Dads funeral. It was his favourite song because his brother used to play it in all the east end pubs back in the 1940's. Great song and you play and teach beautifully. It was the key changes that they loved.

Aimee, You have a great "piano-side" demeanor. And I'm only at minute 5, and you are SO spot on about how we can hear improvisation in our head, but just don't know how to intuitively translate that to our fingers. Love your approach! Thanks heaps!!

Haha, yeah I was thinking the same thing. You really shouldn't play the scale like that as a improvisation at @4:20 because people will think you're playing Fly me to the moon :D
I had the same exact thing, it was soo difficult not to keep hearing it xD
(Nothing wrong with that though.. pretty much unavoidable for that part of the lesson I think.)

Excellent! I use the same approach with my students on approaching standards. Focus on the melody, chord tones, and develop melodic lines. Amazing voice as well!

That was cool. I had the bass out while I was watching and tried to figure out the lines you were singing while tried to move my fingerboard hand as little as possible. I enjoyed that. Learned heaps.
Seems that the spirit of Michel Legrand is still flighting around when hearing your vocal improvisation.
I was so sad he lives us last week....but you're here... as if you had the legacy of some of his art of melody and harmonisation.

Aimee you're a true guru. I'm in love with this song, and i transcribed Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown's solos on the song. However i always get stuck at improvisation, and I always go back to writing solos, which is okay but it is construction at the end of the day, not spontaneous expression! Thank you for the target note lesson, I am very grateful
Try to improvise a base line first, through the entire form. I'm sure you can do that. No worries if not each note sits perfectly. It may teach you the "goal notes" to approach from bar to bar. The anticipation makes it a good solo, and then the added "disappointments" of this expectation. You build expectations, then destroy them, build, destroy. Just like life.

Music is primarily done in the head. Clearly, the beast way to learn to through watching the functioning head of a practitioner. Only a few, on the Internet have the courage to truly teach. Great info, great pace, great personality. Did I say "great"?

I can highly recommend to visit your local jazz clubs frequently and listen to the band, my dear fellow musicians :). I did just do that for half a year now and I really feel that my piano playin' started improve soo much.
