  • Using the tune "I Love You, For Sentimental Reasons", I show you in this video how to play in the spaces; the places where there is a break in the melody and room for a little ad lib to move the song along and give it some motion and variety. Watch and see!

      Hi Aimee, I have watched this video continually. Although I couldn't observe every exact step you made, I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I was easily able to pick up what I thought I missed. I thought you made a very painstaking effort to demonstrate stride. With as many videos as I've seen on the subject, I think by far this is the most comprehensive. I think it's the most effective because you use a practical example. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!! :)

    FINALLY, a woman of normal proportions who admits playing some tenths are seemingly impossible! I'm around guys all the time who can play tenths + like it's a piece of cake. I feel like I have tiny hands around them. I'm encouraged by Keith Jarrett (lol), but it's still nice to hear from another woman that struggles with tenth stretches. Thanks for the tips!

    After listening to this wonderful and beautiful lesson, it occurred to me that one could say that the art of improvising on the piano is the art of allowing the fills to make love to the melody and lead them into a beautiful marriage!

    Aimee, you say, "What did I just play, I can't remember", Are you telling me that your fingers are just going on AUTO. GOOD LORD, i am not living right. You are truly a Jazz Pianist. How sweet it is to see a MASTER make it look so easy.

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FRYEGS6 lol I wouldn't say that my fingers are going on auto pilot. But I am creating in the moment, and sometimes it's hard to remember something that just came out! You will get there. There are so many people better than me and I'm trying to get better every day. 😍

      Yes fryegs6 I'm afraid it's all on auto. I can do something like that. I just think about the melody and the bass. The harmonics are on auto.... But I would like to improve. Aimees internal computer is way nicer than mine... Her instruction is great! The rest should come from your internal computer...God gave that gift to some people... Good luck!

    Another gem of a lesson, thanks Aimee, I love this laid-back stride style… although you make it look so much easier than it is! My late Dad used to play in this style (like 50+ years back, yes, I am a fossil), although he would not have thought of himself as a jazz pianist. It was just the default piano style of his era.

    Due to an accident where I broke my shoulder I have damaged the liner nerve on my left side and I can no longer reach 10ths. (I used to be able to walk in 10ths). I now will roll 1-5-10. I pray that this Brachial plexus program can fix me. Those fills are REALLY helping me. I love the way you explain things. This video is great. Some of those fills are even Floyd Kramerish like old country.

    This got me thinking... do you do any vids where you take one song and present several different styles to play it? Stride, jazz ballad, Latin, New Orleans 12/8 feel (like a Fats Domino vibe), etc. Whatever you work out...

  • @greg55666
    @greg55666 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi Aimee, Thank you for this video. May I ask you a question? You gave us many fills to think about and work with here. My question is, what are you *doing* as you're playing--what are you thinking, considering, anticipating? It sounds like you have many (if not all?) of the fills already internalized, presumably in every key. Do you have the fills categorized in your head according to where they fit in a progression, so the first ones fit with I-IV, then the later ones with I-vi-ii-V-I, etc? How much are you ad-libbing on the fly vs fitting in fills you've memorized? As you played this, were you trying to remember as much variety of fills as you could? Or is it you have some basic fills but then as you're playing you vary those on the fly? (Also, how many of these did you come up with on your own vs picking up from records or other players?) A video about your thought process as you go through a song would be really amazing. Thank you!

      Hmmm I think it’s kind of like talking. You learn sayings along the way and insert them into your everyday speech where you know they will make sense. You might add or subtract a few words to the saying here or there but basically they are just part of your vocabulary that you use as you go along with

    • @greg55666

    All these great fills you're playing.. are you going through a mental catalog of "lego block" -style lines, or are you just improvising in the relevant key knowing the changes? It's fabulous, but I don't get how to go about learning to do it!

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      stavrojr I am just using my ears for these. I think listening to a lot of piano players who accompany singers and especially piano players who seen them selves, like Nat King Cole and Diana Krall are very helpful to listen to to be able to learn fills like these. If you listen to a lot of them, they will start to come out in your playing.

      Yeah, in a way that's like me asking "how can I get better at French?" and getting the predictable (and totally true!) "you need to read / listen / talk more French". If only there was a roadmap for what specific path to take through this, I'd be a happy camper

    You should do a video on how to quickly spot various chords especially in keys with lots of sharps or flats. I always get caught up in getting the notes under my fingers fast enough. When you play, are you always aware of what chord you are playing, or are you mostly playing by muscle memory? I need ways to have the chords just "light up" and jump out quickly for me to spot.

    Yeah, I can play a little piano, but mostly as a guitarist I'm envious of pianists, fills seem more logical and full, more notes available and everything is more Linear than guitar. I have a friend who got a masters in piano, he impresses me , can pull out an Oscar Peterson song book and read through it like I can a newspaper, and that's some hard stuff. I have to sit and study stuff like that , I like you tube, I can actually read quite well w the tune playing, I understand what's happening, but I'm not a great reader with cold play. Anyway, today, I suck up harmonic analysis stuff , just like to know how and what modes to apply, pentatonic Etc, as good guidelines, I usually nee to be told stuff like that, because s been like since 83 since I studied them, it comes back, but all that theory, no thanks, music theory s hard at this age, just wanna play, and I pretty much know how, got a B in classical guitar on a college level., Mosley self taught though, few lessons off a friend, then ear to the vinyl, r chord sheets

      Gérard Meunier thanks! No sheet music. I made them up right on the spot. It's important that you learn without the written music. Figure them out by watching and listening to me! 🙌🏼

      Or write them out yourself; then you really have to listen.

    Aimee, how did you learn fills? Is there any books you learned from that you would recomend?

    Hey Aimee, love your vids, you have an infectious personality! Had a question about harmony. I'm always perplexed by the minor 6th chord. Clearly, we know that from the natural minor scale, and even harmonic minor, the 6th scale degree is flat from the major 6th scale degree. When we play a minor 7th chord, we know not to play a major 7th unless specified to with that chord, because that note doesn't lie in the natural minor scale. Yet when we play the minor 6th chord, the chart is telling us to play the major 6th with that minor chord. I.e. Play a D natural with an F chord as opposed to a C#. Do you know what's up with that? No hate here, the minor 6 is one of my favorite chords, I love the tension, it's just something that's been bugging me. Is something in my music theory lacking here? It seems like that chord should be renamed Fmin(maj6), should it not? It's a stupid little thing, I know, and, and most people understand what to play when they see a minor 6th chord, I was just wondering if maybe you or somebody else knows something I don't?

      Usually minor chord is derived from dorian (or melodic minor). Basically dorian is natural minor with major 6 (or major scale, played from the second note). It makes dorian a little brighter. And since 2-5-1 is the most common progression (and that 2 is dorian) you play dorian chords quite often.

      Riley Merino I feel u, Riley! Lol Good points. I think this is just a jazz thing, right? Classical musicians don't use the term "major 6 chord" do they? And we are just smarties with good ears, so we know what to do! Lol You should ask my friend; Rick Beato. Do you watch his videos? They're dynamite. You could copy and paste your question into a comment on one of his videos and his answer will for sure be better than mine. 🙌🏼🤓

      Владимир Пушкарев interesting! I honestly just thought all chords were based around the natural minor. Wouldn't it be simpler if it were that way though? What's the point in basing chords around different scales, that seems kind of counter intuitive, seems easier just to label chords as relative to one scale. Clearly I'm still a novice with harmony and appreciate any replies.

      Aimee Nolte I don't watch his videos but I definitely will! I'm not sure he'll take too kindly to me calling him Aimee though...
