Actually, it is. That land in Tennessee would have given Georgia access to the Tennessee River. Considering the major water problem in Georgia, yeah it was important.

To be completely honest, Jackson Hole is like the one place in Wyoming that isn't very Wyoming. Like everywhere else is generally Middle Class people and pretty much low prices everywhere (it costs me 5 dollars for a movie ticket and a Jumbo refillable popcorn is 5 bucks) and then you come to Jackson and the Teton Valley and suddenly everyone is Filthy Rich and you spend more on your groceries than you would spend on a Purebred Cocker-Spaniel Puppy.

New Mexico is home to the oldest state capital Santa Fe The Palace of Governors in Santa Fe is the oldest Government Building in the United States. New Mexico is the site of the first atomic bomb test in white sands missile range. Lakes and Rivers make up only .002% of the state's total surface area. The lowest water-to-land ratio of all 50 states. Most of New Mexico's lakes are man-made reservoirs. A dam on the Rio Grande formed the Elephant Butte Reservoir the state's largest lake. 1/4 of New Mexico is forested, and the state has 7 National Forests including the Nation's largest, the 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest which includes the Gila Wilderness.

Also, it was 1844 not 1839. 1839 is when church members fled Missouri, well except Joseph who was in jail for one of several imprisonments that he was falsely arrested for.

Nashville, TN is known as the Athens of the South, which inspired the Parthenon to be built as a non-permanent structure for the World's Fair....it was so popular they rebuilt it as a permanent structure. A few years ago they finally painted the Athena statue to resemble historic records of the original...and it looks awful.

Just wanted to point out that the location of Joseph Smith, Jr.'s murder was not actually in Nauvoo, Illinois, but in Carthage, Illinois, specifically Carthage Jail, where Joseph willingly came to answer charges of civil disobedience and was waiting for his trial with the promise of protection from the governor of Illinois at the time. We all know how that promise of protection panned out, since during this time, Joseph and the people associated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were facing great mob violence and threats of death from many in the area opposed to their beliefs and who feared the church's political influence during this time.

I've been there -- it's pretty awesome in person, especially once one goes inside and experiences seeing the _other_ replica -- a 42-foot statue of Athena holding a 6" Nike (goddess of victory) and the ginormous shield by her side. also features a pretty cool art 62-piece American art gallery and a detailed photo-mural regarding the monument's construction, as well as replicas of other Greek artwork in other halls.

Tennessee has a full scale version of the Parthenon to honor Tennessee's Centennial Exposition because back in 1897, Nashville was often called the Athens of the South. Now it just sits in Centennial Park and despite people thinking it's full of Greek type things, it is mainly just an art museum with a couple of Greek statues here and there.

I live in South Dakota, and I actually have an uncle who is one of people working on Crazy Horse. The reason it isn't done (and probably never will be) is because not enough people are donating money (They don't charge admission) so they don't have enough to get much work done. They're also the fact the my uncle is one of only about five or six who work on it...

Dunno if anyone else commented, but the reason Crazy Horse is not completed (and probably never will be completed), is because they are relying solely on donations and funds. The government DID offer financial support to the sculptor, but he refused. If he agreed to the funding from the government, it would be a wonderful sight to behold. :)

Hello, LDS member here, here's a clarification with Joseph Smith.
Joseph Smith Jr. was murdered in Carthage Jail by a mob while awaiting his trial (which he was completely innocent of) Nauvoo is the name of the city he and his followers founded in Illinois. With him was his brother, Hiram and John Taylor, who became our their President of the Church after Brigham Young. The mob broke through the door, shot Hiram and Joseph ran to the window and was shot, and then fell out the window, falling from the second story window where they were being held. Taylor survived by seeking protection under the mattress. He wasn't trying to escape fro jail, he was trying to escape the mob.

Thanks for trying to help. He also said 1839 instead of 1844 and Navoo instead of Carthage.
P.S.I'm LDS too if you couldn't tell. :D

Just in case you were curious and because you're pretty kinda wrong about it- Tennessee DOES actually have a massive tie to Greece, being as Nashville is known as "the Athens of the South." This however has no bearing, as it is simply the only remaining structure from a massive fair (I can't remember if it was State or World, but it was in approximately 1896, so I'm assuming it was the centennial anniversary of Tennessee and therefore, a state event). Also, Tennessee is actually a misspelling of the original surveyor's map, who originally spelled it Tennessea in the 1700's.

Check out the Pig War in Washington State. The Pig War was a confrontation in 1859 between the United States and the British Empire over the boundary between the US and the British Empire. The territory in dispute was the San Juan Islands, which lie between Vancouver Island and the North American mainland. The Pig War, so called because it was triggered by the shooting of a pig, is also called the Pig Episode, the Pig and Potato War, the San Juan Boundary Dispute or the Northwestern Boundary Dispute. With no shots exchanged and no human casualties, this dispute was a bloodless conflict.

West Va.: "NO! I'm gonna break off an' become my own state!"
    VA: "You can do that?"
    WV: "I can do that."

Michigan is also home to the only state highway in the US that doesn't have cars on it (M-185, located on Mackinac Island, which banned all motorized vehicles in 1898; emergency vehicles, service vehicles and snowmobiles are exempt from this rule though).

as a Minnesotan i was hoping for something that was unique to Minnesota that wasn't related to Mall of America, Paul and Babe the blue ox, Or the lakes here. yes we do have good trout streams over 2,000 miles of trout streams in the Southeast part. Happy fishing! Our natural fish are the Lake Trout and Brown trout which was brought here and then it became naturalized in our streams.

8:23. and that's way we like it. Also don't forget WY is the first state to have a national park, an national monument, first National park, first place several women in leadership positions and the first state to have a county public library. But that's probably to much to put on a list that's about all the different states.

The Fire Ant was first introduced to the U.S. through Mobile, Alabama over 100 years ago. The insect was mostly confined to the southeast until shipments of ant infested sod, plants and flowers from the many nurseries in the Mobile area wound up in other parts of the U.S, even as far as California..

Actually, Georgia's boarder dispute with Tenesee is a lot more serious than people seem to be giving it credit for, and this is for one key reason. If the boarder were to be moved to include the land Georgia says should be theirs, it would give them access to a lake. Water is a pretty darn precious resource, and that lake is the center of the debate around where the boarder should be. Georgia wants that water.

My fave explanation to date for Hoosier is that we were a leper colony and when someone would come across an ear, they'd yell "whose ear?!" yeah, that was in my 4th grade social studies book in Indiana...

Minnesota is also one of the only states that classifies a lake as 10 acres or more, most states say 5 acres or more. By those standards MN has around 17,000 lakes.
