I loved seeing the Roger Brown shelf paintings, what beauties. I think the little airplanes add a lot to them too. Your comments here on the other is reassuring.
Roger Brown's works are great, i love his art and Chicago imagists group, they created something unique in visual art, it's always a special experience for all who love paintings
Anthony Charles MortonThanks for your kind words, I hope all the folks in the department are also watching my Rough Cuts Channel as well...th-cam.com/channels/MpcK_m6Z23e0QvIn8dk8hg.html
for good or ill Sylvester's Brutality of Fact Interviews with Francis Bacon was my first intense intellectual/material/artistic/conversational/emotional obsession; and then his work with Giacometti brought me into that milieu, the studio/café/streets of Paris/existentialist (not to label either the critic or the artist, just a handy handle). Thanks for helping continue my education into the new century
The small works by Cecile Brown look like they may be studies for her larger works, working out colours and patterns. I have followed her career since she made it big in the United States, love her work. I agreed with your comment that it is brave of her to reveal these almost brainstorming works. Chris
I think it was Matisse who said it's not about thick or thin but Brown's work seen up close its thinness impresses me, I had thought that these were thick paintings; she has a very deft brush
I think Cecily has made the right decision to abandon all the stuff about the female body in a photographic state of catastrophe and instead concentrate on using that experience to advance pictorial research in the form of some very good paintings( and some more 'yet to be concluded' ones) that aim at absolute representation of chance chiming with facility and fecundity... The ultimate chancer's pictorial adventure... :-)... A bit like Tom and Jerry and one of them gets out a paintbrush and has absolute facility in immediate magical resoltuion of form, pastiched by Rolf Harris on TV in the 1960s.
I think Cecily Brown is one of the most talented and original painters around. I have to wonder if you would use this vituperative rhetoric if she were a man.
+Ana Wieder sad to know that your world view is so bleak, with talentless trash like brown being one of the most creative people on your horizon. and you need not to wonder my stance toward crappy paintings. lots of people with no vision or talent like to call themselves painters, be that men or women ( you included thanks for showing the world what kind of art you make), but if were up to me i would put what you make into the trash can without the need of thinking ( by the way i had a very hard time distinguishing your sex before i determined that you are one of those garbage makers. i believe that is a solid proof that your accusation of me being a sexist is completely off)
I'm sad to know that you would put any art in the trash, whether you like it or not, pretty bleak and nihilistic to me. Why don't you try expressing yourself by making some instead of being a vicious bully.
Ana Wieder said by the person who obviously so entitled to every thing written to be any sort of sexist remark on female in general. typical liberal elitist barking for no reason. mind you- you dont represent every woman in the world and i know a handful of female painters who despise the work of brown as much as i do. why don't you spend the time to improve your craft and stop being a poor-(wo)man cecily brown and pms somewhere else?
for some reason the Roger Brown materials; varnished wood, shiny screws, glazed ceramic cups and whatnot...just doesn't do it for me. The idea is there, but the art is lost. Too much like furniture. Although the painting style is rather hypnotic, the shelves et al get in the way.
Chris Johnson Yeah Chris, I've been conflicted about the work of Cecily too. Still, I have to respect the reputation and career she's carved out somehow.
jameskalm you meant relentlessly making ' oh-so-painterly' pornography inspired semi-abstract paintings that look like piles of shxt? the insistence is definitely impressive, or is it because people are willing to pay a lot for the turd? pretty typical lucky case of someone obviously not so talented stuck to be that one trick pony . and why all of a sudden making small size work? because small stuff sells faster and easier.
Cecily's paintings are just plain beautiful... James and Kate, as always, many thanks for sharing!
Her new stuff here is fantastic. The brushwork and content is so skilled.
Thanks for sharing Mr. Kalm. Your reports are always a treat!
One of my favorite videos. Thanks James!

The second half (Roger Brown) is really something! I'd love to have one of his pieces! Perfection.
It's so difficult to do small abstractions and Cecile brown has effortlessly made these small wonders

great job James.
Wow. Really enjoyable. Glad to have been able to see hit.
I really like these small paintings in the first half.
Oops, spoke too soon, the second half is delightful. Tiny sofa and figures are hilarious. Thanks for another terrific half ass report!

Ohne deine Arbeit würde man vieles von der Kunstwelt nicht sehen können.
Vielen Dank James
artecht Bitte schön...
David Sylvester's daughter. Man, you get to see some good art. Envy. When I want good art I have to make it for myself. Cecily Brown, hell yes!
Thanks for you perceptive critiques.
James, would like to run in to you one day. Good show, color, small, punch.
where is exit...please?!
Hehe!! “...the half-assed one”. You guy you!

+Ana Wieder It's uploading right now...Stay tuned at the Rough Cuts Channel....JK
Roger Brown what happened?
Cecily’s work.
cool music, do "Sesame Street".

if you insult me again I will report you and have you taken off TH-cam.
cecily brown is just one of the many overrated "painters" that continuously produces trash can worthy stuff that she likes to call painting.

Browns bigger work are more involving. These are overdone.
