What you just saw were the two primary ways battle dress trousers are bloused in the Air Force. The first way (on his right foot) was the Operations way...that's the real way to do it in the field when you don't want things crawling up your trouser leg. The second way, on his left foot, was the Non-operations ("Nonner") way. The Nonner way can go an extra step of placing a thick, broad rubber ring in the pants leg that holds the bottom of the blouse out and round. Back in the old days, they stuck a #10 can in the bottom of the leg to hold the blouse out perfectly round. That's probably still done by honor guards and other special parade types when they're in battle dress.

Thanks for the vid. I started blousing my boots for EMS academy, because I'm a cheap bastard and bought pants a few sizes too long because they were on sale. The instructors liked it and now it's a dress code rule. I unleashed a sweet hell onto every future class there and I have no regrets.

I need to preface with I wasn't in the service. But a friend of mine who was posted a picture of blousing straps with a "like if you've worn these" or something. I had no idea what they were but I knew they were military related. I looked them up and was surprised. I assumed y'all always just tucked your pants in your boots. Matter of fact I did one year of military college and with it ROTC. I wore BDU's(obviously this was a minute ago) only a couple of times for FTX's. And as far as I could remember we all did tuck our pants in our boots. Most of the guys I was in school with had already been to basic camp(different from basic training) and some had been to Airborne school and I still don't remember anyone using blousing straps or doing anything different from tucking. I'll have to ask my buddy about it next time I see him and find out when he adopted them. He would have been commissioned Spring of 1998. I'm not sure when he got out, he served in Iraq so sometime after that.

You only tuck pants into the boot when you misplaced your blousing straps, and the pants will constantly want to come untucked. It's by far the worst way to do this. Some form of blousing strap is ideal.

I was in basic in 1989 and when they had introduced the BDU’s. The TI insisted we blouses the boots the second way the you show. The thin blousing straps were not allowed. When I went to my first duty station everyone wore the thin ones. They asked me what the hell was wrong with my pants and why they were folded over at the back. 😂 I didn’t care...they looked neat and I continued to wear them like that.

I’m guilty of using hair elastics to blouse properly, I’m no service person though, I need to wear steel toe boots for stagehand work and the only ones I have are combat boots. My boss served and tore me a new asshole telling me how to wear the boots properly cause I just tucked my work cargo pants into them. After he told me what to do I showed up next time bloused and he approved so now I blouse them for work. For context of why I have combat boots for work boots, I used to be a metal head so I was a fingerless gloves and combat boots kinda guy but got my act together. Now that I wear them this way for work it feels weird to tuck them in, instead of this way in the video. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your service to your country and people.

If someone that hasn't lived this life see's these videos, yes they may have a heads up in basic but they also run into the issue of picking up bad habits as well. He was wearing white socks, which is not authorized in the Navy.
