Southampton Docks Level Crossing

  • Thursday September 10 2020 at 10.37. The Southampton Eastern Docks (10.28) to Jaguar Cars Halewood (18.50) train of 40 trucks pulled by 66171. On the right used to be Southampton Docks station. Later the line was extended across the road to the Ocean Dock Terminal for boat trains. Many passengers who boarded the Titanic on its fateful voyage came past here. The station finally closed in 1966 and is now a casino but the local council safeguards the land and there are hopes of a new station being built here one day. The car that jumped the lights after they had been flashing for 30 seconds may hold some kind of record. In 2016 a charter train with 561 passengers, travelling at 10mph, derailed next to the crossing on the right. The cause was a lack of maintenance by Network Rail. The track was 51mm too wide. The section manager was supposed to inspect the track every 3 months but that hadn’t happened for 3 years. Basic visual inspections should have happened every fortnight but were done monthly. The most recent inspection hadn’t even spotted anything. The first report that replacement sleepers were required was made in 2012 but the work had been continually deferred. The Rail Accident report barely criticised NR.
