  • Today was National Windmill Day in Schiedam Netherlands or Nationale Molendag. These windmills are the tallest in the world and the view from the top is amazing! You can walk to each windmill and go to the top for free on this day. Folks young and old dressed in period costumes singing, dancing and marching in the streets. Schiedam Netherlands is a small town right outside Rotterdam and it's so easy to get to by tram or metro. When we moved from the US to the Netherlands we never knew that this existed and these are a national treasures to Holland and are celebrated with a national holiday each spring. So today was all about food, fun and windmills. As a retired expat I can tell you this...The Dutch people love tradition and know how to celebrate it!

So nice to see this video. Now that I see these windmills, in the village of Kinderdijk there are even 19 windmills in a long stretched ribbon behind each other. These old mills are on the Unesco world heritage list. Highly recommanded. Thank you Tammy and Eric for all your videos, I enjoy watching it very much.

Schiedam is such a gem. All the Dutch charm and none of the tourists ;)
The windmills in Schiedam had to be high as they had to catch the wind above everything else that has already been built there.
In September, they have the Brandersfeesten there so that should be a nice reason to return there ;)

I like your videos, and your interest in getting deeper into the Dutch culture than most foreigners do. You have tried much of our food and drinks, and experienced some of our festivals. Few of the visitors from the US dare to try anything local, but you are the exception to this. I like your reaction to everything in your videos.
It depends very National Mill Day is celebrated in each region, but in Schiedam the people are very proud of their windmills, so they do more than most places. In many places, all festivities are just in and very close to the mills.

As Sheldon would say: fun fact about Dutch windmills. Did you know those Dutch mills are nothing more than a large DIY project. Back in the day they would disassemble a mill and put it back together in another spot in under 7 weeks?

@@SoultoSoulTravels I could call "Bazinga", but is was not a joke or a trick.
BTW that building kit comment only applies to mills used for pumping water. The ones used for grinding wheat and barley are permanent features, as you have seen with your own eyes.
One way of eating the large pancakes is by rolling it up or folding it, Calzano style. If you get a chance, try cheese pancake. They either do grated cheese or a slice of cheese in the batter. Tastes heavenly.
In the US they have "the Waffle House". Here we have pancakehouse, or if you wanna try a dutch pronounciation "pannenkoekenhuis".

For most Dutch including me windmills are a bit too stereotypically quaint nostalgic Dutch. But is was the high tech of it's day and the driving force behind (proto-)industrialization. The invention of the saw mill by a self proclaimed 'simple peasant' in 1592 allowed the Dutch to build ships 30 times faster than the others, resulting in the 1.5 million Dutch doing more than half of the trade for 150 million Europeans. Thanks to all that money the Dutch Republic was able to fence off the absolute monarchies of Spain, France and Britain and keep the Inquisition out, changing the course of world history.

I am glad that you enjoyed my hometown and it's windmills! It looked indeed less crowded than I remember from the years I participated (the nautical youth organisation I belonged to used to do the tours through the canals with their sloops), though that doesn't mean people used to come for me of course.
Can you imagine that in it's heyday, Schiedam had about twenty windmills?
Did you have time to make a quick visit to the public library as well? It's situated in a historic building (on the right at 6.15) and especially the groundfloor is worth a visit.
Anyway, thanks for the positive words about Schiedam, come back anytime!
    PS
Best way to eat a pannekoek: roll it up like a wrap or tortilla (either with a fork of fingers), cutting in pieces is optional (but is my preferred way should I like to eat one)...

@@SoultoSoulTravels As it seems that you like towns with a rich history, may I suggest that you visit Hellevoetsluis and Brielle some sunny day? They have a history as 'fortified towns' and most of their citywalls and moats are still preserved, just like parts of their old centres. Both situated by the water with much to see and experience. Hellevoetsluis has some historic (museum) ships, harbour and lighthouse and Brielle played an important role during the Spanish occupation in the '80 year war'. Both towns are easy-ish to visit by metro and bus from Rotterdam...

It is a lovely town in the middle of the Netherlands with pretty small streets, canals, old buildings, an old town gate from the Middle Ages and lots of museums. But as long as your abusing the stuff.. Here is how you really should drink it: 1 Drink it cold and always out of a mug (there are special yellow Chocomel mugs available) 2 Pour it like the Middle-Eastern do with their tea. Start low and then go high up so lots of air can get into the brown gold, which enhances the flavor. 3 Always buy the regular one. Not the Vers (fresh) one from the fridge or the low-fat one either. Just saying..Have fun!

A windmill - ehm… to state the obvious - needs wind. That’s why windmills in cities are (or were; there are not many left) so high: they need to rise above the buildings around them. Windmills even (used to…) have so-called wind-rights: new buildings must be at a sufficient distance, in order not to block either the windfall, nor the turning of the upper part of the mill. Yes, the whole top of even those gigantic windmills in Schiedam can be turned towards the wind.
You had me laughing at your pannenkoeken; Schiedam proudly calls itself Jenever-stad, or even Jenever Capital. That’s where the grain goes, and the Ketel 1 you tasted, is originally made in Schiedam.

Tall windmill - to benefit from wind enough, the distance between the blades of the mills and surrounding objects needs to be as large as possible - vertically and horizontally or else the objects cause drag and disturbance patterns in the airflow so the mill cannot operate to its full potential. Ask city dwellers on an incidental day sailing on the water when the wind is 3 Beaufort how powerful the wind is, and they'll say at least 5.

Eric and Tammi: Yet, another re affirming film showing a nation of many people "participating in life". :) To put this into "comical" and "dry wit" perspective, I watched this film a second time with a woman I know. And, as we watched it together, I was making "observations" and comparing it to pathetic life in the U.S.
Example, you are at the top of windmill . . and no one...not a citizen or a cop is asking, "What are doing there - do you have a permit for that ?", etc. :) I wish you could have seen the look on her face when I joked with a "Ferris Bueller" confused look on my face, "My heavens, look at this....all those people with different skin colours, different languages and ethnic background outside together.... getting along".
And then I "fake" scratched my head and then my chest and asked her, "WHAT are these people doing to me They are messing with my brain ! ?" :) It is always a delight to see these participatory films. This summer, we ARE going to Sweden.
We were going to go to Monaco, as well, however, I assure you that Monaco being what it is... I just can not imagine all those people being this happy and trusting of each other. Each film you do like this is another positive energy inspiration to stay away from every place negative. Keep it up. :)
