I have an American friend who lives just round the corner and he does not comment much on American politics. If ask ask him something about America he answers me as a convinced Republican, but as the way it was when he moved from the US to Germany nearly 30 years ago. "Why do you think I live here?" is his stock answer. I feel sorry for him but that is mutual. I'm a Brit who has been here in Germany 40 years. But I have a teeny weenie advantage over him. I foresaw the pain of Brexit several years ago and now have two passports

I think voters need to vote strategically next time. And that is against Trump. Even if you do not agree with everything Biden does, he's America's only chance to remain a democracy. So it would be not in their best interest to vote for a third party. Not now, maybe in 2028.

And i must say i kinda feel sorry for all those Americans that still believe they live in the best country there is. Its run by lobbyist and the the rich and famous. Great video guys.
As you know, I have commented a lot of times about this subject on your other videos with my (extended) opinion(s). What else to expect when your political campaigns are funded by money (and usually the one with the most resources wins), that the elected people are representatives of the rich and influential. This time though, I have nothing more to add and let you do all the talking. Highly appreciated!
Ironically, the oldest politician you talk about passed away on the exact same day.
Edit: on the Dutch election system. Because of a multiple party system, the politicians are forced to be representatives of the people, not the 1% and are judged and elected accordingly.

When I was in Chicago a couple of years ago, I watched some tv and rolled over the floor from laughter. 'What's up?', my cousin asked from the kitchen as she walked into the living room. 'What's so funny?' 'There's this comedian who pretends to be a politician and acted like the viewer was actually believing his b*llshit. Great piece of humour!' 'That's not a comedian but our current gouvernor running for re-election.' Which made me laugh even harder. It would be terrible if US politicians would behave like normal, decent people; comedians would have to write their own jokes again.

I don’t like either side of politics. No matter which side wins, you get solutions but also just as many problems. Like you said, it isn’t about committing to one side but choosing the side that is most balanced at that time. Unfortunately both sides just want power and don’t have the best interests of the public at heart. “America is the greatest country in the world”. Uuuhh… NO. With that political system definitely not. So happy you moved here. More peace of mind in your retirement. ❤❤❤

The maximum age to run for president with a good health should be 65. If you have health problems don't run for president. People like Pelosi should retire and enjoy life and make path for the younger generation. The politics in the Netherlands in comparison with the States is just different. We have too many political parties to choose from. Which one is the best to make the Netherlands great again 🤷🏽‍♀️ That will be a challenge for the elections in November.

My answer to your question, dutch politics is quite different from the US and UK, here in netherlands and most European countries there are multiple political parties who are going to form a coalition based on how people vote.
During an election those parties will have their own party programme with a list of positions on how legislation should be and which direction we should go.
But in the end a coalition must be formed between the parties who won and want to form a government with the winning party.
The government legislation will be based on the positions of those party during the discussions on forming the coalition.
I think that is the main point that we can be at ease because there is always the best for the country at heart, not one very powerful party or politician who gets his way.
In my view this is what is needed in the US and UK also if they want things to get better, now we have seen brexit because of a extremist fraction in the UK and we see the political decline in the US due to an extremist fraction in the US.
It is actually incredible that there is no question of fact checking and even media which is used to spread propaganda.
Now some fear Russia because of Putin and his nukes, but 20 years from now we could be dealing with a nutcase in the US!

In The Netherlands, we (fortunately) don't have to choose "who is the lesser evil", but it still is a challenge to choose the most capable politicians and political parties. Somehow we miss political talents right now...
Edit: About the Animal Party's leader, it's actually an internal power struggle within the party. The woman who stepped down was the party leader, but the party's board voted her out. It's causing quite a bit of uproar, because she was seen as a very good and strong leader for the party...

The problem of US politics (and UK politics) is that the voting district favours a two political party system, this only lead to division.
In popular voting system coalitions have to be made and makes policies more balanced, you only need an electoral threshold ... otherwise you end up with 17 political parties, like in the Netherlands.
TELL THAT TO SEVE!, and wish him happy birthday.

As a Dutchman I don't understand the U.S. democracy. They call it democracy, but you only can make a choice between 2 parties, 2 persons (two very old man). So it is republicans or democrates, left or right, black or white, good or bad and there is nothing in between. In my country there are a lot parties in between, there are 20+ parties, so you don't know who to elect, thats democracy 😀

If democracy is about power to the people then the USA already lost its democracy. Democracy is messy by nature, but it's the best system we've got. What is happening there is ridiculous (demo-crazy?). You know money was a great invention, but it does come with a very pervers side-effect.
Polarization is a thing here in the Netherlands. That's something to keep an eye on. We've always been a consensus society and did great because of it. So I'm happy to see and hear that politicians here slowly realize we have lost some of that strength. Things ARE going to change in the next election here (22=11-2023). Let's hope it's for the better.

    • @aislingbooks
      @aislingbooks 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

😢 I'm sure you're well aware of the ongoing news, but this is the English update from Dutch News NL:
"The man who shot dead three people during a killing spree in Rotterdam was probably targeting the exam committee which ordered him to take a psychological test before it would award him a degree in medicine, it emerged on Friday afternoon.
Erasmus Medical Centre Stefan Sleijer said in a written statement the day after the shootings that the university had “signals” student Fouad L had been targeting the committee.
“One of the members who were at risk was taken to a place of safety by the police on time,” he said. The university told L to see a psychologist after receiving a warning from the public prosecution department about him.
L was not “unsympathetic” to a psychological test but in the end, he did not follow through as required, Sleijer said. There was no statement from a psychologist and it is unclear if he actually saw one.
On Friday afternoon a sea of flowers was growing outside the hospital where 43-year-old lecturer and GP Jurgen Damen was shot dead. Staff spoke of their shock at the killing.
Flowers too were piling up outside the home where a woman and her 14-year-old daughter were killed. They lived next door to L, and had reported him for animal abuse.
The dead woman, named as Marlous by the AD, had four children and the girl who died was one of twins. Neighbours said Marlous was terrified of L and that he had often shouted at the children.
Meanwhile, L’s rants on a 4chan chat group with the slug “political prosecution of Asperger men” have given more clues about his behavioural problems.
In the chat, L writes about being highly intelligent, considered weird by his fellow students and “becoming a raging alcoholic every time they suspend me”.
He also states that the university had refused to give him his diploma and that he therefore lost his job and is destitute."

    • @aislingbooks
      @aislingbooks 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Of course this man would not have been destitute because of our social welfare system.
And though our gun laws are strict it's easy to smuggle a gun over the border, say from Belgium or Germany.
My question remains, as I'd also been working close to where Pim Fortuijn had been shot dead in 2002. If this psychologically unstable man had been so highly suspected of untoward and aggressive behaviour, why was he handled so lightly beforehand? He had all the signs of instability and abuse: of hospital staff where he was a student, the threatened and terrified neighbour, as well as police reports of abusing animals.

Keynote speakers are involved from all over the globe, and it should be very interesting. We also have the Roosevelt University College, its curriculum taught in English with many student exchanges between here and the States. @@aislingbooks I didn't follow the aftermath. However I do know he doesn't rule out the possibility to return to politics.
To me that sounds bonkers, why would anyone willingly go through those troubles again? That said, Sanders needs someone to step up...
      PS

So who will you vote for if all candidates seem to be in it for themselves only?
As for Dutch politics, it's not as bad (yet) as the situation in the US but we seem to be slowly moving in the same direction. The trust in politicians and their parties is already at an alltime low...

It is amusing to follow the USA elections, but damn it's so poisoned. I don't like the two party "democracy" system at all. "The winner takes it all".
Our own democrapcy is far from perfect but in so many ways way more healthier.

Hello to you both, i just discovered your blogs and seeing them from the beginning. I am Dutch and moved to spain 8 years ago. I enjoy your videos very much. I just saw de "boerenkool" video, can i make a sugestion? You put the bacon strips together with the potatoes to boil, if you fry it separate in a pan, you have nice crispy bacon and add this together with the juice to the potatoes and boerenkool it gives a crispy flavour. Thank for your videos i try to keep up as posible.

I didn't know the DNC/Democrats are going to have an open debate with RFK jr. and Marianne Williamson - are they acknowledging the other options finally? [internet search; nope!] Cornel West as an independent is not part of the democratic debate.
To bad US doesn't have a real representative democracy.

I don’t think most Dutch people find it worrying that lots of politicians aren’t politicians by trade, for example lots of times you have a discussion to use trade own politicians, so someone who’s a active soldier or sergeant in military who’s promoted to minister of defence. But the same people are now complaining that the minister of healthcare isn’t able to change the healthcare system overnight especially because he’s of D’66 origin a party that’s associated with the elite. And of course a Princeton professor is not by definition an excellent minister of higher education.
Now with two new parties with similar beliefs and polled a big growth they need to find enough new kandidates. You’ll see politicians who leave their old party for the new kid on the block, this might be because of their beliefs, but lots of them for see that they haven’t got a position in their old party that they will be elected. And if they are leaving that easily, how engaged will they be with their new party. After elections they are owner of their seat and they can split of themselves of their party. For example the 50Plus party, last elections they won one seat but their candidate splitted off after fifty days in office

D66 isn’t associated with the elite, they are the elite. They are overrepresented in media, justice, healthcare, education etc. And not because they are the best ones, but because they give the jobs amongst themselves. And they deny it of course, they say it is because they are educated or university schooled or the best one for the job. They act the same as CDA and PvdA used to do, but better educated, more shrewd and more supported by the ones who got the jobs the same way. That’s the benefit of a supporting media.

Right wing politicians tant to prommis all kinds of things to the voters without telling them how they are going to pay for it. Politicians here in the Netherlands can prommis you everything but in the end not much of those prommisses is going to come true because every party has to work together with at least 1 other party. So they always have to compromise. So it is easy to tell the people what they want to hear. In the end you can blame the other party for not being able to fullfil your prommisses

I'm not American, but if I'd have to vote, I would vote for Biden, not because I like him or the Democrats, but because he's the lesser of two evils, I think. Voting for an independent is voting for the winner, be it Trump or Biden.

I very much liked your video about American politicians. We know a little bit what is happening in the US, but it is very nice to hear it from the perspective of a normal citizen. I have followed the American News Tube videos for years, especially when Trump became president. I was really worried at that time, because Trump did not seem to be competent. Now I think that Biden is even worse. I must be horrible to realize that one has to choose between two evils. The politics in the Netherlands are not that exciting. People in the Netherlands want change, but are afraid of changes as well. That is how we are. I also agree with what you say about age. It is not just about politicians, but people in the Netherlands also tend to work longer and be in charge, whilst being too old for the job. What is happening in the US will be our foreland if we keep on pushing elderly people to stay in their jobs. It is a fact that young people start too late with their career, and elderly people stay too long in their jobs, which is not good for any society. Elderly people should retire while they still are able to adjust to retirement, or work part-time in not too demanding jobs. This is better for everyone.
