    This is ancient music, patriarch to all what is heard now-a-days.It is meant to soothe and satiate the soul.Though Indian in origin it is meant for all, Vasudeiva kutumbakam in its true sense.The ancients knew no borders.Enjoy the sublime.

      @YSV Rao while, i knew the OC had exaggerated a little bit, in his flow of emotion, I was certain that as soon as i open the blue highlight pointer saying "view reply", it will be someone trying to pour self hate vitriol on his emotional flow. All in the name of narrative or something; unwilling to let go of a fellow brother's inaccuracy, and share the appreciation for the transcendental space which this music undoubtedly creates..
      Lo and behold, I find you, exactly the kind of comment i was hoping for.
      Nice to meet you! Namaste :)

      @@allenturing3080 , Go through history it seems mediveal because most origional great Sadhus, saints and brahmins were hunted and killed during Mughal invasion, only few in south survived. In the north most of them converted and became muslims to save this artform. if you go back to trace roots of all the classical musicans(most of them muslims), you will trace their root to Tansen and Baiju Bawara. who in turn trace their root to their guru Swami Haridas.

      honestly? You know how we 'feel' different music chords differently? That's because our body resonates and tenses differently to each one. They're singing things that get the little muscles in your face and head to unclench.

      @hrkvid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Hi Roddy,
      I found your comment very interesting. One of the stories I have heard about Dhrupad style of singing is that 'these' sounds were the sounds which existed (or created) in the beginning of time (when the universe was created) - and that the artists are just attempting to recreate those sounds. So in that sense, what you 'felt' aligns with the origin stories of this singing style. I had heard Gundecha brothers almost 20 years ago at St Xavier college Indian Classical music festival. Listening to this music live is a totally surreal experience. They were singing it during very early morning (the prescribed time for this type of singing, I think). You can actually go in deep trance/meditation while listening to this music. It is other worldly. Cheers.

      @@hrkvid When u listen to other music, you might feel like dancing but this bring stillness in the body. Sadhguru shares amazing story about dhrupad.
      When we were growing up, our home was steeped in Carnatic music. It was so much a part of the very air that we breathed. My father also appreciated Carnatic music in a big way, but we were growing up on Rolling Stones, which he could not stand! He would be sitting with the newspaper or reading a book or something, and we would turn on the western music slowly. He would be too absorbed in the day’s news and we would turn up the volume gradually. We knew he disliked this music but his foot would unknowingly start tapping. Then we would catch him and say, “Look at your foot, you like it! You like it!” The nature of that rhythm is such that the body moves. There are other types of music where your body will become still. Particularly dhrupad music is of that nature. Generally, dhrupad has no words, they will go off endlessly with just one aa. They can do aaaa for six hours - just one sound! If you keep listening, you can simply sit still because the music is designed to make you still.
      Rhythm can be of many different levels. If it is the rhythm of the body, it is one way. If you touch that of the mind, it will be in a certain way. If you touch that of the inner energies it will be a different way. If the rhythm touches the deepest core, if you find the rhythm of a certain dimension of existence, one becomes naturally meditative. In a way, that is what you are trying to do with all the kriyas and meditations. It is just an effort to get into that rhythm - a rhythm of stillness, which is the ultimate rhythm. If it is still, where is the rhythm? That is the rhythm that is anaadhi (beginning-less). Every sound has a beginning and an end. But the sound that emanates from the stillness has no beginning and no end.

    My all time favourite rendition of my favourite raga. The brothers have rendered a timeless, magnificent Bhoopali - this is one for the ages.
    Ancient utterances of Vedic times resonate in our present. There is a melancholic, haunting beauty in their plaintive melody. Images of sages meditating in the mountains flast past in the minds eye. The rhythmic, pulsating chants bring forth gentle streams that gather strength slowly building to a powerful, crescendo.
