  • This is it.
    The final mission.
    When everyone goes all out.
    You'd think I should use the Shroud, right?
    I mean, there's an Ion cannon in play, so how can I not, right?
    Well...

    This mission caused no end of frustration for me back in the day. I even shelled out extra money for the strategy guide and it told me to bring the Phoenix. Instead I kept getting one-shotted with Moose shouting, "the ion cannon has targeted us. Get out of its range!"

      I think you had to switch to a third person view every time that warning popped up so that you'd be able to get a better view of your ship and your immediate surroundings and get out of the cannon's range ASAP until it powered back down. I had to replay this mission multiple times before I figured that out since I couldn't see the cannon most of the time in first person view. I think I had even more trouble securing Steiner's escape pod in the last part of the mission though, it seemed as though every single Black Guard fighter was targeting it and not me or any of my squadmates.

    Thanks for uploading this! This mission was a source of pain back in the day, i remember i could never get out of they way of the Ion Cannon, so i ended up flying the cloak-capable ship (whose name escapes me atm). But still, very long mission, with many phases, and many opportunities for things to go wrong.Well played!

    While I haven't played the PC version, I can say with certainty after watching some of these videos that the DC version with thumbstick aiming is way more difficult. I didn't even know you could taunt enemies. Pretty sure that, along with a myriad of other things, is missing from the DC port.

    Great playthrough, as always. Cool that you show the medals. I like the animation of the pistol in the locker. Very interesting gun design, the magazine to, and especially the rounds. Reminds me of 5.7x28mm. Awesome that you didn't use a Shroud!

    • @CptPakundo
      @CptPakundo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can't even imagine how many times I retried and failed this mission with a Shroud.
      I thought it could go just like all my previous playthroughs... But then the reality of the hard difficulty mode hit me - I absolutely cannot save enough Rippers, let alone Steiner's pod, with a ship packing so few armaments as the Shroud.
      A few whole HOURS of wasted effort later, and I decided enough was enough, and I was going to do something daring - pick a different ship.
      "But wait, what happens if the Ion Cannon locks on? I can't cloak to save myself, and this mission requires me to spend ALOT of time fighting at close proximity to it."
      ...Well, turns out all I have to do is make sure I stick to the blind-side of the Boridin, near its top. It worked out well enough, plus I got to have fun with the Wolverine some more. I always liked its beastly alpha damage potential. What a finale to the game that was, as it turned out I actually succeeded in saving Steiner on my very first try with the Wolverine, whereas I never managed it with the Shroud.

    • @CptPakundo
      @CptPakundo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In general, protecting the Rippers was the one part of the game where I really went all out in trying to catch the aggro of as many enemy fighters as I could - those Rippers just go up in flames like flies, and if too many die, that's it - mission failed. Whew.

    It's amazing that back when this game was first made one could play it (and a few others) as a male _or_ female character, and _nobody_ was freaking out about that online; it's also amazing that counter to the so-called 'facts' of certain people who shall remain nameless, there _were_ a lot of female characters in video games doing heroic things.

    This game was the BEST game I've ever seen and played! It deserves a sequel or at least a remaster. Unfortunately, new and new games appear, with more and more tame themes, only improved in terms of image, resolution and frames/seconds, but worse and worse, with a lot of talking...John Ford said: in any film in which there is a lot of talking, that is, in which it explains itself, the result is a stupid movie!

      It's better on PC, TBF (to be frank), especially when you can modify all of the ships to be different or more powerful, and to even have cloaks (with a [sadly now non-existent] fan-made modification program that was offered on the _Starlancer_ fan site The Lancer's Reactor.)

    I always failed the Mission with that death Star Station thingy

  • @jonsnow5644
    @jonsnow5644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love how you taunted each and every single one of these Saber pilots... "You are dead man! And you! And you... And you too!" and then they all aggro'd on you and missed like 95% of their shots, and then you started blasting like you did for the previous 23 missions. XD And how even the official game guides strongly recommend using a Shroud for this mission, even going so far as to consider it mandatory for the completion of this mission, but you've proven them wrong and shown that stealth is optional when you cannot be seen - let alone get hit - and melt everything that comes into your crosshairs for more than a second.

    • @CptPakundo
      @CptPakundo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And the best part of it all?
      I flew a ship other than the Shroud for the same reason I spam-taunted those fighters - out of necessity.
      On the hard difficulty, I found myself failing this mission REPEATEDLY because I just couldn't save enough rippers for the next phase of the mission, so I kept having to restart. Over, and over, and over, and over again. No success.
      At a certain point I realized I was going onwhere fast with the Shroud (Oh, and btw, this is already after I started taunting the fighters to try and draw aggro away from the rippers already), so I decided I was going to risk it all, and use the Wolverine. That's right, a ship without a cloaking device on a mission with an Ion Cannon.
      .
      ..
      ...
      1st tried the entire mission with that ship. GG.

      @@CptPakundo I haven't played this game since it came out back in the day, but I remember once I got the Wolverine I didn't use any other ship. I went on the hard difficulty and didn't die once until this mission. That ion cannon would always get me. Once I did get so far as to detonate the warp core of that escaping part of the station, but the blast crippled me, badly and I can see even from your distance it blew out all your shields. Managed to fight and kill all attackers but two... which I was amazed to see could kill your ejected pilot pod. Anyways, I quit and never did beat the game so It was nice to finally see it beaten.

  • @SammyJ26

    I hate this mission, i literally can't save enough rippers no matter what I do. Really frustrating they decided to go with that instead of another torpedo bomber attack. Still, it's nice watching it get finished.

    • @CptPakundo
      @CptPakundo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As it turned out, I didn't need to get them ALL for the next phase to begin. Leaving that turret intact was fine because it couldn't harm the Rippers while they were planting their explosives, and I had to stay nearby to be there for the manual detonation on time.

    Truly I hit my limit at this mission, really annoying if you dont know what you doing, always rushed to the turrets when I could just clear out the figthers and kurgens first. Taunting really pays off during the ripper section (which sucks), but its kinda ridiculous!
    I wonder if they really tested this mission or did it on purpose, its insane and im playing in normal...
