  • The Dance and Brothers revolver was one of the best quality Confederate-made revolvers of the Civil War. In this video I'll try out Pietta's replica of that fine revolver from Texas.

I like your comment RE: chain fire. I was told (many years ago) by an old timer, that chain fire initiated from the front and greased chambers were mandatory. Don't remember who, but one guy with a high speed camera, proved that chain fire can initiate from both the front and the back. In all cases where he succeeded in getting a chain fire, "loose fitting" allowed it. Loose ball, tight cap, chain fire from the front. Loose cap, tight ball, chain fire from the rear.
This didn't happen every time, but these were the causes in each instance where he succeeded in getting a chain fire. Greased chambers helped the loose ball, but it was Russian roulette with the loose caps.
Glad you're back. I've missed you.

It's nice to see Pietta having the Confederate guns out now like the Dance and the Griswold & Gunnison. I might have to get one of these when I hope to start competing in blackpowder revolver again just to have something that is a little different.

My dad taught me to load five whether it was a cap & ball or his Ruger new model Blackhawk. Turns out the Ruger has a recall for transfer bar problems and accidental discharge. Just shows me dads good habits were right.

That’s a really cool revolver. .44 is my preferred size so to see that shape in .44 is awesome. I wish it had a hexagonal barrel that would be the prefect one!

I would like to thank you for the videos. The information in them has helped me with my pistols. I have a 1851 brass framed Navy in 44 with a 7.5 inch barrel and just recently bought a 1858 new model brass framed Army with a 12 inch barrel. I agree that the 1851 shoots way high but the Army is more accurate for me. Extremely glad you are back doing these videos, learn something every time i watch.

Hi! So glad you're doing well! Very worried about you when you had broken your ribs and did in your shoulder. We've been praying for you. Wonderful and informative video as always. Enjoy your in-depth reviews of old tech pistols and rifles. Good that they have the all steel frame. Yeah better than the pseudo Griswald used in Hell on Wheels although the show is awesome. Pietta makes some great stuff! Thank you.

I have the Uberi 1862 police in .36 cal. I love it. It only holds 5 rounds. My absolute favorite C&B so far is the Spiller and Burr. It's the most accurate even out to 50yds. I've been looking for a Starr in SA. Dixie has had them on back order for a year so far. Love your range.

As a historian I would like to make the point SC fired on a UnIon Fort in 1861…. The war was a rebellion started by Southern hostile action…. The overriding cause was slavery, despite the revisionist history of the lost cause. States Rights? Yes the right for states to continue own slaves and to be able to continue to add slave states to new territories… just saying. I would also note I was born a “Yankee” but I have adopted the South as my home for most of my adult life. 😅

Very true about the ball size being necessary for a good fit to seal the chamber. I have had a chain fire in an 1849 baby dragon replica. I was using .315" balls which were loose enough to push into the chambers with my fingers. I did grease the chambers liberally as I always have and both chambers on the left and right of the chamber in firing position fired. Thank goodness it did nothing to me at all except make my heart skip a beat when I realized three chambers were fired after shooting one shot. I did hear two very quick pops when I fired which made me wonder and that's when I noticed it. I never would have believed it would fire with greased chambers but it did. So, the moral of the story is NEVER use undersized bullets of any type in a cap and ball revolver even if it's greased!

I enjoy your videos very much. You often talk about chain fire mostly coming from the cap end, and assert that the grease doesn't prevent chain fire. In a recent video with live fire - I will find the video and follow up here - another black powder user was unable to cause a chain fire from the cap end. The number of attempts was small so that certainly doesn't rule out that it can be caused from that end. However, on the other end, using proper setting of the ball (ie to ensure it is perfectly tight & shaves a ring of lead as you do) he showed several chain fires from that side. When following up with grease, no chain fires were experienced. Doesn't mean grease STOPS chain fire but shows pretty conclusively that chain fire commonly comes from the front and that grease absolutely does make it less likely. He did not, to my recollection, use wadding

The one advantage I see with the lack of a recoil shield is if you needed to get one shot reloaded as quickly as possible: slip in a cartridge on the right side of the frame, ram it home at the bottom, slip the cap on from the left, and then move the primed chamber up to battery. With a recoil shield in place, you would have to turn the cylinder one full revolution after loading the cartridge to get the cap on, then another 3/4 turn to bring it to battery.

Have one. Haven't fired it yet. Used to have the colt version of this. One thing I don't like about the dance Brothers one is the handle is to short for my hands, which leads to it feeling to front heavy. I read somewhere they made the dance brothers handles smaller than the colt counterparts though because people in the south tended to have smaller hands than northerners. My colt 44 was perfect. Well balanced, if not a little back heavy. Just what you want
