It's really interesting how Nintendo goes back to their old Famicom while their Super Famicom is right there... and they keep releasing new games for it. It's not something game companies do anymore. They tend to have just one console on the market with maybe a year or less of an overlap. I personally like the presentation of this one... besides just having cute Mario graphics! It's a neat looking golf game for the aging system.
"You're pulled off the course for the day if you get 18 over par" Now I'm imagining a bunch of golf cops dragging poor Mario off the course because he absolutely sucks at golf.
little fun fact the PlayChoice-10 release actually switched to the original Famicom title Mario Open Golf instead of opting for NES Open Tournament Golf but besides the name it seems to be based on the NES release
I believe some of the holes are based on the disk system titles. Also, the US and PC10 versions are heavily cut down from the Japanese release. Only 3 courses each. And the course hazards are changed up.
I can't say I agree with the +18 being an issue, unless this is your very first golf game. The standard was set here that didn't need much refinement by the time Mario Golf GBC/N64. It's just well made and didn't need much tuning, a little fine tuning, but not much for what came just a few years later on GBC/N64.
So not Golf 2, gotcha. but in all seriousness I did play a bit of a rom of this one yeah it definitely felt a lot like the classic original, but with a lot more course options.
