Thank you very much for taking the time to explain about the dangers of these devices, and also just that they are not even cost efficient. Every year, lately, I have been seeing this idea pop up in social media, and moreso this year with the booming prices of energy. It's important to at least let people know so they can choose for themselves whether to heed the warnings or take their chances. Shared, thanks!
Heating yourself is much more energy efficient than heating air. Old fashioned extra jumpers, blankets and hot water bottles should be used when possible. NEVER leave an open flame unattended and never work with fire without adequate ventilation. And a means of extinguishing the flames.
Excellent video Vanessa! As an engineer, I like that you are one of the first videos to break it down properly. There are only so many thermal watts to release with a candle. Candles use convention heat as the energy normally goes up to the ceiling. The pot slows this and converts it radiant heat with the clay pot. Since we feel radiant heat easily, people think there is a lot of heat available.
Vanessa, here's a camping trick that I learned at the Pathfinder, and I use it every time the power goes out. I take the alcohol stove filled with fondue fuel. I take the stainless-steel single wall water bottle. filled with water of course. Boil the water. Make yourself a cup of hot beverage. Close the bottle and keep the hot bottle in your clothes or in your blanket. I'll guarantee you that you'll be warm. If it works in Canada, it will work in Bavaria also
This is not meant to heat an open room. This is an emergency device to warm a small tent perhaps set up inside a dwelling--sleeping bags on the floor--that type of thing.
Great demonstration video Vanessa. I have to admit that I have tried this before, and it doesn't work. You will never heat a room with one. Thanks for sharing.
I use 4 9hour tealights under a pot,I have a smaller pot inside the big one,the pot balances on 3 pot,you had to many candles ,it stands on a flat pot tray, No problems, it's on my window sill in the bathroom, It takes the chill off a cold room when the heating is off, I dont see a problem with
Hello Vanessa, I made three candle ovens to try them out made them with a methal basket and a glass candle holder inside on an stone sauser. I had most of the materials already at home. So it costs me twenty to thirty euro's to complete those three candle ovens. Almost no heat. Only funny for burning candles and see the candle light trough the little holes in the methal basket. It is a shame people and shops sell those things for way to expensive prices. Thank you for sharing your experiment. Greetings from the Netherlands😉

This will work, you have to leave the drain hole open. The design you have with the bolt it plugs up drain hole so the flame has to draft up the out side. People have been burning candles in there houses for hundreds of years with no ill effects. I have done this and used a couple of bricks to set the pot on and it worked perfectly. Very good video to help make people aware of issues when doing this type of thing. We all need to use common sense.
@@thinkgood7412 That would be a VERY small room to burn all the oxygen off, and very air tight. Houses have ventilation. They are not air tight. Toxic fumes and open flame would worry me more.
Good info video Vanessa as I am sure people who know nothing about open flames will get into a lot of trouble as their heating becomes a problem to pay for. CO / CO2 and lack of oxygen are but a few dangers with any open flame as they all give off cancer forming micro parts into the air you breath. So if you get away with one you may not get away with the other long term. Let's hope people get wise as the problem becomes bigger and any small indoor pets are not looking to good which is another sign of the same problem. Arthur (UK)
I can see why people would do something like this in an emergency situation. I would hope that they would know to have a vent hole in the top, but I know, people don't know. I also know they do things in excess. 2 candles would be enough for all the heat you could safely get out of that, because the idea is only to heat the clay. Excess is part of the problem with society these days. Bigger, more, faster until everything is used up and gone. People amaze me. I am grateful for a little warmth. Thank you for a great video about the dangers if excess.
4:00 your discussion of the candles competing with your body for oxygen in the room is a good point. However, you then started talking about not being aware of that fact before dying. That /can/ be true, but for it to makes sense you need to mention specifically carbon monoxide (CO). If a candle is burning efficiently, it will make carbon dioxide (CO2), and your body WILL tell you very loudly if CO2 levels increase. I believe what you were trying to warn about are cases where the candles burn inefficiently and make CO primarily. That gas is tasteless and odorless, and your body has no mechanism for warning you about it.

I've wondered about moisture in the clay steaming and exploding the pot. Rocks around a fire pit will explode, rather violently in some cases. A friend told me so.
I remember in around 93 Memphis had an ice storm that knocked out the power for a week or more and there was a story on the news about a person putting gasoline in a kerosene heater and it blew up the house. Terrible tragedy
They look like tea candles to me, very poor for heating. I use them to set the mood in the evening, when I want to relax without using the harsh overhead lamps. You are right in saying they don't provide much heat. By the way, I love your aquarium! I used to have one years ago, and yours brought back a memory.

I have done the same and I put 4 in. The pot got black inside, so I know that the pot needs a hole on top to allow the heated air to flow so 2 tealights or one small olive oil light jar little lamb light, is best to have it light when you are home not left alone, need to have a carbon monoxide smoke alarm and powder extinguisher. Lay strong Foil around the pot for safety Make sure the Pot is not under the light and needs a cap, The olive oil Jar or a soup Tin size is about 3-4inch and the pot needs 8inch (10cm) above so the Oil won't get hot
I like the alcohol heaters that are enclosed and you can control the flame. They were called heat pal and made in Sweden. If they are dangerous, please advise.
I have one of those. The principle is that the heat of the flames that would normally travel slowly up the smoke plume is instead captured by the clay pot and radiated in all directions at the speed of light. But you are right. It can build up a lot of flammable soot under the pot. Does it work? My skin feels warmer anywhere in the room but I still feel cold inside my body. And yes, the soot is messy and damgerous.
Well done, Vanessa. This demonstration was necessary, in order to show all people that there are dangers inherit with tea lights. This was very responsible of you as a host, influencer, and citizen of the world. I like how you addressed the current energy crisis. Your timing was perfect due to people who cannot afford heating, will look for other methods. I bet your point about the depletion of oxygen when burning too many candles has not been considered by fire safety experts. This was brilliant, common sense, to educate all who may seek alternative ideas to warm their homes. On a completely unrelated issue, I see you still have your SG guitars. I didn't see you amp. I hope you did not have to sell it. Have a good weekend, and please stay safe, and warm.
Fantastic video Vanessa... These videos are what every bushcrafter should watch before they go out into a forest for any stay. This also is for those who want to heat their homes and they need to learn the proper tools to use instead of something simple like a fire oven. So much valuable information here one can grab and learn how not to do things. I just saw the entire video, there's just too many candles, I used 3 at most and the contraction I made didn't have the metal screw blocking the hole in the bottom of the pot so heat didn't accumulate inside the vessel.

The terracotta pot heater is most definitely a bad idea Thank you for taking the time to show and explain this to those who might not know or understand the dangers
I’ve seen many people do this with the screw through the holes, blocking the heat. This will of course make it very dangerous as the heat has nowhere to go except trying to travel down to escape out of the open sides. This is working against gravity (and we all know heat rises) so unless there is so much heat already present on the top of the pot, there will be no way for the heat to travel out. I’ve seen these devices being used with the hole on the top unblocked and it burnt for 4 hours and there was no fire hazard. Do you think the reason these devices are so dangerous is because there the assembly instructions of the device instructs people to block the hole at the top of the outer pot?
I made one of these using clay flower pot & base and Ikea utensil holder as separator and stuck a single pillar candle in the center, clay pot got to 109F, a single candle is not expected to heat a room but provide a heat source and remove condensation in a small tent. A single candle under a poncho with a can to trap & radiate heat could save a life. A guy just died on Appalachian Trail due to hypothermia, was above tree line so no firewood for a fire, a candle & can could have saved his life.
So true … unfortunately I am that person that is looking for an alternative way to heat up my bathroom, as there is no electric plug and gas heating doesn’t work so it’s basically the only way
Mercifully, I've never heard of this. It sounds more like the sort of crafts project that we would teach to kids in a shop class, than a tool that we would seriously use for anything. It really seems like a convoluted way to imitate ready-made prjects (like candle lanterns) that already exist on the market.
Greit ! The sot that comes from the burning is not well for the lungs either. This reminds me of when I served in military and we used paraffin burners in a small tent. we were black in the face in the morning, and we were spitting black for hours...
I know some one who uses a tin with these in to keep bathroom above freezing in winter ,they don't heat the tiny bathroom just keeps it little bit warm ,you can definitely smell them.i just use hot water bottle and fleece blanket and two old whisky bottles with hot water out of tap to heat up my bed an hour before I go .
Yes, this makes the diffenerce. Not thinking to heat the room with it, just let it stay a little warmer. But most people think they can really heat with this.
If its a matter of servival I would purchase 3 inch rigid insulation and make a box that holds a chair maybe a small table and a lamp and sit inside with that candel with a heavy coat on. I would watch computer screen through a window. Make the room smaller. You would need a separate oxygen supply to the candle. Via a hose.
I had a carp fishing version and found it not so good. Dehumidifier and warm cloths, also you could put a 25mm sheet of celotex on the floor then carpet on top makes a cosy room.
Great work. Energy has at LAST become an issue for the general public. The experts have for decades warned for this scenario. Combustion releases unwanted gasses into the environment. Whichever size. To close down nuclear reactors and starting up oil and coal powered plants is criminal and crazy.
Hang sheets up blocking doorways and hallways. Heating one room where everyone stays is easier than several rooms. Make sure windows are insulated on the outside. If you have drafty windows, staple plastic over frame on outside. Also, block drafts under doors with towels. Keeping everyone in the same room will raise the temperature. You'r body will produce its own heat. 5 people in a room will be warmer than 1 in a room of the same size. If you going to use a kerosene heater, a carbon monoxide detector would be a good idea. You can use the kerosene heater during the day to heat the house. At night it would be better to just use extra wool blankets.
I think these would be a last resort. If you just didn't have anything else! Make sure you have ventilation if you do use them. Please look on the internet on DIY solar heaters! They are not hard to build and can be built with stuff most people have laying around. Of course, it requires sunny days but worth looking into!
Hello from Utah Vanessa! Burning candles while sleeping is a sure fire, (see what I did there?) way to die in the resulting fire. Ask me how I know. I see you have the 2 Gibson SG’s. Please tell me that that is your Malcom Young Gretch, hiding behind your shoulder.
Vanessa, check out the videos on TH-cam about making one of these with a can of lard (animal fat) or shortening. It burns a LONG time. BUT all these things can be dangerous and should never be left unattended. You're correct. There WILL be sad accidents with these.😢🙏🇩🇪🚜🇺🇸❤
Yeah, tealight ovens were originally meant as an EMERGENCY measure, for example in areas that have snow and deep cold so rarely that most people lack sufficient winter clothing for abnormal situations like in Texas.
3 Retired AF, Navy And Marine .. Clay Pot Split and Fracture - Causing them to Splinter and Fall Over. If it falls over then what about The Candles themselves?! . Candles !? Bee's Wax And Soy Candles can be Times to the Minute and can last for over 100 Hours or more. Plus, unlike the Candles your using, are Smoke Free. . Any Time your going to have "A Fan" blowing the Flame Around, use a "4" Air Vent T Junction" where The Flames are doing The Work. On That Note, Sterno would be best cause you can snuff it out. . Remember, even A Sterno & T heater are only "A Furnace for maybe A 20' X 20' Room at best.
I tried this for my very small greenhouse last winter. It was an abysmal failure. Not a lot of heat and you have to constantly watch/replenish! Better off buying low orice solar oanel, battery storer and a soace heater or get a butane heater.
I've seen these but they have never captured my interest. It does look dangerous to me as well. Really produces a lot of chimney soot. I think you call it (Schornstein RuB) Sorry if that's wrong, Its been 40 years since high school. LOL

A Naked flame is always a dangerous thing...... Vanessa has warned you..... :-))) xx
A girl with an SG. YESSSSSSSSS.........!!!!
I had a carp fishing version and found it not so good. Dehumidifier and warm cloths, also you could put a 25mm sheet of celotex on the floor then carpet on top makes a cosy room.
Happy Friday vanessa!
Great work. Energy has at LAST become an issue for the general public. The experts have for decades warned for this scenario. Combustion releases unwanted gasses into the environment. Whichever size. To close down nuclear reactors and starting up oil and coal powered plants is criminal and crazy.
I like nuclear but crazy leftists protest and weak politicians give in to them.
Thank you Martin!
there will be always plenty people around, without brain, just leave them alone. I love you, by the way!
How about using Crisco for heating
Why do candles have blue flames? What did you add to it? 15:15
😉Liked your video have a nice weekend 👍👍
You too!
Watching.
INDONESIA.
Confirmed exactly what i thaught 👍
I think these would be a last resort. If you just didn't have anything else! Make sure you have ventilation if you do use them. Please look on the internet on DIY solar heaters! They are not hard to build and can be built with stuff most people have laying around. Of course, it requires sunny days but worth looking into!
Diy solar heater are a good idea!
I've been trying to tell people for years about the danger of these ridiculous things. 3 decades in the fire service is my experience
There WILL be sad accidents with these.😢🙏🇩🇪🚜🇺🇸❤
I must have gotten on your Germon channel because l was about the only one that talks Enough in your comments.
Yeah, tealight ovens were originally meant as an EMERGENCY measure, for example in areas that have snow and deep cold so rarely that most people lack sufficient winter clothing for abnormal situations like in Texas.
Hi New friend! 👋 I came over from @Survival Lilly
LOL
