  • While still at quarters of FDNY Squad 288 and Hazmat 1 at 56-29 68th Street, we see the Squad as they respond to Box 7030 at the Stop & Shop at 74-17 Grand Avenue between 74th Street and 79th Street for a man who fell and was bleeding. As the Squad was getting on to Grand Avenue, we can see the ambulance following them. As I went up that way about 10 minutes later, the Squad was returning, and the ambulance was still on the scene. They went by me another minute or two later, heading towards Elmhurst Hospital running with lights and siren. Squad 288 is a 2013 Seagrave Marauder II. Enjoy the view of the rig, especially the use of the Q2B mechanical siren. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on November 29th, 2019.

    There! Now THAT'S how a rig should respond out of quarters. And with a REAL Federal Q even. Great response!!

    As a kid this was my neighborhood firehouse. If you are in the area during daylight hours, there is a beautiful monument sitting just to the rear of the building honoring those from the house who perished on 9/11. Keep up the good work.

      I thought I could hear three sirens too (before the ambulance.)
      Sounded like the truck was using a Q2B, a E-Q2B and Air horns.

      Marc Watson Air horns aren’t really a siren.... he was talking about the electronic siren heard. The horns are on majority or maybe even all fire apparatus and if basically replaces the default horn on the vehicle.

    Ok so this may be a stupid question but I’m gonna ask anyway. What is the difference between a squad co and an engine co. And the difference between squad and rescue?

    • @alexandersalarms5380
      @alexandersalarms5380 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't really a difference, but engine co is for fires only I think abs doesn't have much more medical equipment from. A rescue squad

    • @masseypadgham7113
      @masseypadgham7113 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Varies by department. In many cases a squad is a pumper with rescue tools, such as extrication tools, etc. Some places call that a rescue pumper, some just call it a rescue and call conventional 'heavy rescues' exactly that. Besides rescue tools, FDNY squads have, I believe, a second vehicle and the training to deal with hazmat incidents.

    • @ex-missourifireexplorerrob8274
      @ex-missourifireexplorerrob8274 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a stupid question; from forums.firehouse: "Both the squads and rescues are special units which fall under the special operations command (SOC).
      There are a total of seven squads and 5 rescues. For squad locations and units, there are two in da Bronx, (sq41 & sq61) two in Brooklyn (252 & 1), two in Queens (270 & 288) and one in Manhattan (18).
      Each squad has a 1st due district where they operate as an engine co. and with that comes the usual engine company runs, BS, EMS runs (CFR-D) ect...In addition, the squads are called upon to go to most fires of any significance in there regional portion of the borough, (they can end up anywhere) which means they go to far more jobs than a normal engine company or ladder. squads can operate as an engine or ladder company depending on what the IC needs or desires. They're equipped with ladder company tools and can perform any of the rescue ops that you would see the rescue companies perform... extrication, high angle, technical rescue ect... the squads are trained at the FDNY's rescue school, same as the 5 rescues.
      other than the fact they can and do operate as an engine company, what sets the squads apart from the rescues is that they are a hazmat company. in addition to the rescue pumper (squad) each company has a hazmat rig (bread truck) with a full compliment of hazmat, dikes, equipment, level A suits ect.
      squad see a lot of work and it's a beautiful thing." -forums.firehouse.com/forum/firefighting/firefighters-forum/103052-fdny-squad-companies. As for other Departments, such as the Department I was an Explorer, & now work a long side with as a City employee, the only two "True," Engines, (all other "Engine," Companies Quints, or five function apparatus, and/or engines with 65' ladders), operate solely as Engines, as the only Squad Company, (no Rescues), operates as Technical Rescue, (which all other Companies can respond to, having all necessary equipment, and at least one Technical Rescue Certified member), SCBA refilling, & vehicle accident victim extrication, as Departments which have Rescue Units operate them as EMS units, or as what a Squad does; the Department I was an Explorer of calls the Engines Heavy Rescue, (the call-sign over the radio just Engine; "Engine 1/2,").

    • @chrisbarr1359
      @chrisbarr1359 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's the difference at the FDNY:
      Engine only does engine co. duties. Squad can function as an engine co or ladder co. at fires. Squad also have other duties such as they operate a HMTU (Hazardous Material Technician Unit) as their second piece. They also get assigned on working fires (10-75), accidents with entrapment, Major Emergencies (10-60), Collapse Matrix assignments and other complex emergencies. Squad Companies are just one notch below the elite Rescue Companies.

      It depends on where you are. In most cities a Squad Company and a Rescue Company are the same thing, because they come from the same root: Rescue Squad Company. In New York City however, the 2 are totally different beasts. A Rescue Company in the FDNY handles rescue duties, including anything to do with vehicle accidents and such. A Squad Company in FDNY is a multifaceted unit that serves different roles depending on where and how it responds.
      If a FDNY Squad Co is responding to a fire in its 1st Due Area, that is the area where it would be the first unit to arrive on scene, then they will respond as an Engine company and operate as such (same goes for EMS calls too). If they are responding 2nd Due, or 1st Due but not as the 1st Due Engine, then they may respond either as 1st Due Truck company or 1st Due Rescue company, depending on the needs of the call, where the call is, what units are responding/have responded, and what the Battalion Chief on scene would like them to do. Squad Co's also have a 2nd piece they operate, which is usually a medium duty rescue truck outfitted for HAZMAT duties, which is another way they can operate.

    What is the difference between a squad and an engine

    • @golf77tango
      @golf77tango 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While the term "squad" and its use vary a bit from one department to another, in general squads are sort of a jack of all trades. Clearly this squad can function as an engine company when needed in that role, but they are equally at home when performing tasks typically done by truck companies or even rescue companies. In the FDNY, I think the squads are generally staffed by some of the most experienced and highly trained firefighters.

  • @Mike25654

    More than two minutes response time. That's true discipline...
    Most first world fire departments run 30sec during day and 60sec during night.
    And don't tell me they are fast if it is important and they are first due to a fire. It's not in their responsibility to judge if it is important...

    • @MIkeyb4306
      @MIkeyb4306 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong. Most first world FDs do not have 30 or 60 sec response times. Not possible unless you are already sitting on the truck. Most are 2-5 min out the door.

    • @Mike25654
      @Mike25654 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MIkeyb4306 I don't even wanna know where you get 5mins. That may be okay for a volunteer dep.
      For most paid Departments in Germany for instance it is 1min out the door and a maximum of 8 Mins to get at least 10 Firefighters on a fire scene.

    • @MIkeyb4306
      @MIkeyb4306 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mike25654 Well thats in Germany. Even with getting out the door in 2-5 min we still make it on scene with 15-20 within 8 min. And thats not volunteer thats career.
      Here is the time line
      After the alarm it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to a min and a half for the firefighters to get to the engine bay depending on the size of the house. 45 seconds to 1 min 20 seconds to get gear on, 10 seconds to get on truck, pull truck out 3-5 seconds, ensure door closes behind you, 5-10 seconds.
      2 min average when awake
      3-5 when sleeping. And again all depends on style and size of the fire house.
      Running to the truck is dangerous and causes injuries. An injured firefighter puts the whole truck out of service which then requires a fill in truck from further away.
      If your not on the job on this side of the pond then you have no business judging how or why we do things.

    • @Mike25654
      @Mike25654 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MIkeyb4306 Okay thanks that's interesting.
      How does that work outside of cities? The Fire Department I follow most in the US is SMFR. They staff the engines times 3 and the trucks times 4. So most of the times (Station houses only either one Engine, Truck or Rescue) the third or even forth due house has to be there within 8mins. That's never gonna work out with the driving times?
