I'm a cashier, yesterday I cracked open a roll of nickels to give a customer some change and as the coins were dropping into the register I spotted a buffalo nickel out of the corner of my eye! I'm not supposed to mess with any of the coins in the register, even if I swap them out with my own, so as a coin/ currency collector it hurts me so much to let so many wheat pennies, old Jefferson nickels, and star notes go. But I've never seen a buffalo nickel in circulation before and it was way too good to pass up, so I swapped it with a modern nickel when my boss wasn't looking
Funny story about nickels. Quite a few years ago, I think around 1985/86. I was in a convenience store, the lady ahead of me at the cashier was paying for her stuff. Well the cashier refused to take her nickel said it was fake. I offered to take that nickel and gave the cashier a “real” nickel. What I got was a buffalo nickel. This was a very good result in the end...all those pretty newish looking coppers...always makes me smile:-) I actually got a Maya Angelou quarter a couple of months ago...I usually don't see the current years new coins until late summer usually..it sure made my day. Looking for silver, check out any local stores that have a Coinstar machine. I have found a 1935 and a 1948 Quarter in them so far plus a lot of foreign coins. The reject cup may be full of rejected coins. It rejects all foreign AND Silver! The silver coins weigh different is the reason. There are often a lot of pocket change coins too, don't know why, just a quirk in the sorting mechanism.
Believe it or not, I found a 1944 P nickel today. I brought three rolls of nickles home from the bank today and found this coin. It must be beginners luck. I also brought home 4 rolls of pennies and had a wheat penny in addition to a few other coins to add to my collection. I have learned a lot from your videos. Thank you.
Only Silver Dimes I’ve found in the Wild was a 64-D and if you search a box and have more than 1 silver, 1 of them will be a 64-D it’s almost like it’s the most common Silver Dime to find

Congrats on the W quarters. We search a lot of boxes and agree with you that they are getting harder to find. Where we once found several per box, lately we’ve been averaging 1-2 per box. You did very well getting 1 hit on 10 rolls!

so I have this canadian penny (its somewhere in my room idk where) the date on it is somewhere in the 1980s I beleive, but its not round, the sides of it are kind of making an octagon shape, is there any reason for it? Or something to do with the value?

If you're looking for unsearched bank wrapped coins, I'd recommend asking your local bank/credit union if they can sell you a few rolls. Start small with something like pennies. I have a good video on this subject: th-cam.com/video/fH7Q8ntlWJY/w-d-xo.html If you're interested in something more predictable in terms of finds, you could try ebay for older rolls, but those are almost always pre-sorted. I have been experimenting with the idea of selling rolls that are put together specifically for a fun coin hunt, like for parents to look through with their kids to get them interested in coins. On the King George VI Canadian coins after 1947, part of the inscription "IND:IMP" was removed. Starting in 1948, all denominations had the inscription: "GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX." Anyway, that's how I can tell if the coin will be before 1948 or not.
It is extremely significant that the Mint used the new portrait of George Washington on the American Women series quarters since it was designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, the wife of the designer of the Buffalo nickel. Her design was originally submitted to the Mint in 1931 in the competition for the new quarter design that would begin production in 1932. Her design was rejected in favor of the design we are accustomed to seeing, in part because she was female and the mint director at the time was not all that keen on having a female's design beat out the designs of well-known, experienced male sculptors.

When India gained its independence from England in 1948 the inscriptions for all British Empire coins lost the "Et. Ind. Imp." but it was too late in Canada to have new dies on time to satisfy demand so for the early part of 1948 a maple leaf was engraved into the master dies under the 1947 date as a kind of asterisk. That satisfied demand until the new dies were made. So 1948 Canadian coins can have a 1947 date. The Canadian 5 cent piece was silver up to 1921, and smaller than a dime! In 1922 we began minting the nickel for the first time.

I purchased these mats, they look some bright and easy to see detail on the website. THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU GET! The ones I got look like they were done on filthy paper, splattered with food stains, and the coins are dark and hard to see the detail. You should be ashamed to send out that garbage. Ask for the bag out of the change counter. I did this on 50 cents coins ended up with 30 silver coins. If they let you, I'm in the country.
