Jesse Enkamp
Sir can I learn karate from you
Jesse Enkamp I practice kyokushin style for 9 years. We have only one grading per year. Good luck, Jesse sensei!
Sir you're superb
Hey Jesse, I have one of my students grading for his junior Black Belt this thursday!!! Everyone wish him Luck!!
Batson Guitar, Games and Good Times Fingers crossed!
I think it's sad that so many karate-ka's see the black belt as the end goal. Nono, 1. dan is the beginning of your karate journey, here you begin to master all the techniques you have learned, and you start to develop your own karate. Osu
Marcus Ganick For real. I'm a blue belt, and I had a female friend who entered at the same time as me in Karate, but she's 2 years younger. We both passed to blue the same day. Unfortunately, she left the country and migrated to the US. In there, 2 months after she passed to blue in my dojo, she became a brown belt. Which is sad, because, even if my kid were in a mcdojo (I would never let that, but if), I wouldn't let him pass belt per month, so quickly, it just isn't right. And now she has this mentality that its all about the belt, and not about the way, something my dojo supports. My sensei always quotes me "the belt simply holds your pants, nothing else".
You’re so right. When you get your Shodan you are NOW a really good white belt 😏 and now you begin to get deeper. It’s just the tip of the “karateberg” so to speak.
@@rogerbyrd3524 to somewhat reword (not that it's needed) the black belt is mastery..... of the easiest stuff in martial arts.
My sensei always told me this, and having got my 1st Dan recently. I'm so excited for everything I will learn
1st dan - or any other grade, is just a belt - it is just a marker. If you kept your white belt all the time, you would still learn the same.
I have the utmost respect for you and the way you run your dojo. It's so refreshing to see someone teaching the art the way it should be. Reminds me of my youth when I trained with Master Tadashi Yamashita. Times have changed, and I use to struggle with parents questioning when their kids were going to test. Finally I pointed out you are not training for a piece of colored cloth. You are training for the knowledge and all karate has to offer. If you are ever in the Boston area, reachout, first round of saki is on me. Osu!
Mr. Enkamp. The world keeps moving along because one person passes on, teaches, another what they know. They pass on the interpretation of what they know. The world gives awards and honors for inanities at times to people that masquerade as other than what they really are. If there is something after this world, and if there are rewards there, teaching/helping/caring for kids is surely a top honor there. Nothing is more precious than, nothing worth more as a persons time. To not only dedicate your time but, to enjoy teaching kiddos...I think gives a person to call themselves a “good guy.” Good for you guy.
As a teacher, This is one of my favorite videos to watch over and over again. Thank you for all the details in it. Gives such great ideas!
You are a great sensei and give karate a great name - thank you for being a worthy role model 👏
This is so amazing you could feel the pride in knowing the students would do their best and would be fully supported by their Sensi’s, Instructors, or teachers imagine twice a year you get to see everyone’s hard work and dedication pay off. Amazing.
This is a great vid I love how much u care about the kids and how much work u put into them
I really appreciate the way you explain the differences between an adult and a Jr. Black Belt. I trained for 8 years prior to receiving my black belt. I trained for an additional 6 years for my 2nd degree black belt. I always explain to people that all of the training and testing preparing you for your black belt is basically teaching you how to control your body. Once you receive your black belt that's when your training truly begins and you learn to control your opponents body.
"McDojo" LOL Haven't heard that in a while.
Arthur Gutierrez Lucky you! :-)
Not every dojo that does gradings more than twice a year, is a McDojo. What about smaller dojos that grade people on an ad-hoc basis, as appropriate?
Very nice. You and your family seem like terrific people with an incredible school..I wish the best for people like you all .The world needs more people like this
Max Prime Thanks, means a lot!
That's the first time I hear an explanation about tameshiwari that really makes sense to me. For years, it was always about the "destructive power" you build through training. By the way, I need a makiwara.
Well, amazing work, Jesse Sensei, family and friends!
Jesse this was beautiful to see, the different formats of training the joy in that environment and the spark in the children, what an awesome dojo what an awesome experience. 🤙
I have my grading tomorrow :D Wish me luck
+Glebson Fingers crossed!
You are an inspiration for all the people who loves karate as well as who practices karate you are great sir
I'm gonna have my very first grading in February, needless to say that I'm really excited and a bit nervous. I love your channel!
Thanks! Good luck :)
So what grade r u now?
@@MartialArtist2002 I just got my purple belt in February :)
Love the energy......that whats it about at first.....greeting from Buddy Govender in South Africa
This is such a healthy thing for kids to be doing instead of in front of a screen. I see this at the academy I go to in Myrtle Beach. They seem to be healthier and happier humans.
i trained 10 years karate and mma but we still focus on katas and karate especially kyokushin kumite! in my gym fighters must train something like 13 years to get to a black belt, of course in depends on how fast you learn but still you need that years to truley become a proffesional.
in our gym the belts go like this :
white
yellow
orange
green
brown
black
and then dan's.
i am blue belt after 10 years, i had a chance to be brown belt and the test is very hard !! ohh i remember my blue belt test!! at the end you stand like a punching bag but the most important thing is that you keep standing and trying to do something like a hurt tiger! you need to have strong spirit in karate!
i already have the brown belt papers and i need to do that :
katas :
Heian Shodan
Heian Nidan
Heian Sandan
Heian Yondan
Heian Godan
Tekki Shodan
Bassai Dai
Kanku Dai
Jion
then i show my techniques:
kicks :
mae geri (slap and hold)
mawashi geri
mika zuki (out side,in side, spinning and scissored mika zuki)
yoko geri
oshiro geri
ura mawashi geri (front, back and sppining)
Gedan Mawashi Geri
kakto geri
then :
shadow boxing (boxing)-including striking, blocks, foot work and Feints
then :
shadowboxing (karate)-including striking, blocks and Feints
then :
shadowboxing (muay thai)-including knees, elbows, blocks.
ippon:
1-25 right side
1-25 left side
self defense :
street style choke with both hands straight from the back from and sides
mma style choke with one of the hands griping the other
from front side and back and the same choke to the floor
street style hammer punches to the hand (you need to go for the takedown)
and the last one i forgot the english word.... it looks like you hug someone from the front side or the back and you need to free yourself...
knife attack
pistol attack
then BJJ
Transitions from all positions
freeing your self from bad positions, lucks or chokes.
choke or luck from each position
then JUDO
take downs
and all kinds of bringing down your opponent
then the fights :
boxing
boxing
muay thai
bjj
mma
karate
karate
karate
karate
karate
and then you get your brown belt !!!!
(also in our gym the maximum number of tests that are dome at the same time is maximum 2 or 3(
Sounds alot alike to the brown belt pages on my martial art.

I like what you say: we make money to do martial arts..... realest words ever spoken.
Thank you for the vlogs of your dojo life Jesse, love your content!
Wow, loved the board breaking philosophy !!
I've been doing Shotokan karate for 9 years and my black belt grading is in japan in just two months.
I cried watching this video. This was so emotional at least for me. I watched this video earlier also but every time I watch this video I cry. Those kids are the luckiest kids to train under the best of Best senseis in the world. ❤.
I'm 19 years old and 1º kyu and i'm so used to doing only one exam a year, that for me it's already amazing that people actually do 2 a year let alone one every month like you mentioned.... And keep in mind this year is my one decade landmark of karate journey. But i see one 2 many times people whose skill just wont match the graduation.... Aside from the bitching gr8 videos and keep up the good work!! Much love from Portugal!
Congrats to all the kids that passed their grading. My son passed his grading on Saterday and he went from Red to Yellow Belt. His next grading will only be in June 2018 again!!
We had our gradings this weekend too! We got our blue belts. I love that you train in the weapons, too. I would love that!
In my dojo, we has just one grading in the whole year. Awesome video sensei
Its good to see how other schools do their gradings, my school grades every 3 months, I have always throught that this is to much, it just means you are always preparing for the gradings rather than doing karate!
You are absolutely right! The focus must be on learning not only getting belts!
Thank you for this video Jesse. Ive been following your videos... Im so inspired by your videos to continue teaching kids..
Jesse has grown on me he kind of like a mentor to me
The school I started with did gradings every 6 months for belts above Yellow. White and Red were done every 3 months and they were super easy. White to Red didn't really have any special requirements. It was more of a way to keep the kids coming.
My style had the following belt order:
White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Brown, Brown, Almost Black, Black (1st Dan).
So minimum time to Black (provided you passed every grading) was: 3 + 3 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 5 years.
Quitting karate after shodan (1st dan) is like getting a driver's license and never driving again
Great video. Yea I agree on the Jr black belt and too you have these kids that as you say have been training for several years so you have to award them accordingly. Then they will later obtain full black belt. And so the training now becomes deeper. Good stuff !
In my dojo we even don’t have a junior black belt and gradings are once in a year. While the gradings our shihan sit at a table in our Honbu Dojo and everything is real traditional...but I love your work keep going you’re the best!
how come you are only at 56k subs?!? with your content you deserve 1mil
Arad Gharib No freaking idea! I’ll keep pushing
It's quality, not quantity, Jesse Sensei! You have 56k karate nerd followers, and those are the best followers.
really its great to see this many students in your dojo keep it up
oss..
My school just does belt tests when enough people are ready
in our dojo we also have a white stripe in the jr. black belt and my yellow belt test is in summer i hope you all have a great day ☺
Amazing job! This kids will never forget it, for sure!
Awesome change of video variation Jesse sensei keep it coming 👍
+Soahm Gupta Thanks bro! You know it 💪🔥
Wow!! What a great way to finish the 2017!! Kids in your Dojo are so lucky to have a great family karate Ka teaching you n training their body n soul!! I agree on ur point that said other Dojo grade every month to make money... unfortunately being patient n resilient is lacking in this generation.. that's why your family's theory ROCK!!
I gotta say this is some of the best looking technique from young colored belts
Great work! All the karate kids look happy!
P.S. I like your dojo t-shirt
Hey bro, have you ever heard of Kajukenbo? What do you think of it? I’m an orange belt, and I really find it enjoyable.
Also, something about Karate. I joined into a class or two and noticed that there is almost 0 sparring during training. And when there is, it’s usually limited to light taps above the belt. I looked it up and found out that most sparring is even done in slow motion. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed. You have no chance to apply what you learn.
So I wanted to ask: are all Karate classes like this, or only some schools? Or maybe it’s about the Karate style?
Great tests. Pretty similar in my dojo, also two times per year and the board break we also do it. Only difference is that in my dojo it is individual, besides the bunkai and kumite parts, although there aren't so many people in my dojo.
I love the fact you make a distinction between Junior Black Belt and a full Black Belt, we call it Provisional Black Belt. I am curious as how you grade them from then on. We start building the adult curriculum into their training. They grade once per year earning a white tip on their belt (we use the same as you) and at sixteen they are eligible to test for the full belt. Also, in regard to grading/testing as an additional income source, we only charge for the Junior Black Belt and full Black belt tests. They get a larger diploma, an embroidered belt, and the adults get a new uwagi.
Another great video! I love seeing your family- and this one with the kids grading was awesome. Serious work with grading and a bit of Santa fun-enjoyed this so much!
Merry Christmas to you and your family ⛄️.
Oh 🤔hmmm , seeing that snowman makes me wonder , do you get much snow in winter in Sweden?
Graded to shodan a few weeks ago - waiting for my seishin belt now!
Make a video on issuing dojo's belt certificates
In our school we only give black belts to certain ages and our little kids stick with the white belts with a color stripe in the middle until they reach that age and if they're deemed to be able to go through the test for black belt
Love this video
My Dojo does the same as yours. Twice a year. Unfortunately last time no one got promoted.... My son was so sad but it was correct. No one earned a promotion. In November he will be promoted to Orange Belt.
Nice one Jesse, 28year old yellow belt here. Better late than never right? Nice vid :) Os from Greece :)
Not all studios that allow Kids to earn plain Black Belts are McDojos. My instructor's instructor was as hardcore as they get, and if a junior student earned it, he would give it. But he would hold the kids to the same standards as the adults, and he NEVER guaranteed a Black Belt to anyone. He was the kind of instructor who would give someone a failing grade on a test for no other reason than that haven't failed a test in a while, to teach a "life lesson" or something like that. He was also borderline abusive to his kids by today's legal standards, and it's amazing that he was never sued. XD That's an extreme example, but there are studios that think 1st Dan is just about mastering the basics, and they believe a gifted, hardworking 9 or 10 year old is capable of that. Those studios progress the students more slowly from that point with incremental age limits for each Dan. Some of those studios are excellent studios with high quality training and kick-butt Martial Artists who have great values. Of course, some are not.
We roughly do like three tests per year at my dojo, but when we test we don't generally for each test end up ranking up belt wise but by kyu. We have to pass a certain amount of kyu exams to then test to change belts, which can take a year or more depending on the belt.
Can I ask you for tips on how to make the kids listen to you because I'm struggling on making them exercise for worm up and some of them don't want to do a single run or walk🥲 , I would really appreciate it 😊
How do your junior black belts graduate to black belt? Do they have to start over or wait for a particular amount of time to elapse?
Yo Jesse, Its me again! If I have any problems or questions about martial arts, is there a way I can contact you personally to get assistance?
My place has 6 gradings a year. 3 for kickboxing which is basically karate (we use belts, throws and all that cool stuff) the other 3 are for Lau Gar Kung Fu
Hi sensei jesse ...i wuold ask you about the mawashi geri ...the angle of the pivot leg is important? How should be ? @jesseenkamp
In my karate school under IJKA SA we have 3 gradings a year and we have the black belts doing the grading of the students
I had fun watching this just picking out the drills and kata, Bo go,go,go (uke in the clip), sai and tonfa tsukai kata, I think I saw the end of Shuto Roppo I think, Renza uke, Shiho geri and then the kata looked like Matsumura Rohai. Great to watch Jesse-san. I'm curious which kata do you expect the junior black belts to perform?
How do u manage to keep an eye on all the kids at the same time?
Nice training
Great video Sensei.oss !!
How long do you think it will take for me to get a black? right now i'm green.
+Arad Gharib Maybe never. Keep practicing and we’ll find out! 😎
I just got my green belt and now I can start FREE SPARRING(in my dojo):P
Arad Gharib You just got answered by Jesse XD.
Now, it depends, not just in you as the Budoka, but what that green belt means in your dojo, how often are the gradings, and if you are in a, sorry, mc dojos.
In my Dojo (okinawan tradition) green is 5th kyu, so it would take like 3 years to gain the black belt supposing that you learn and train everything properly.
Hi Jesse, what does the golden border on the belt certificates mean/represent? I see these borders on almost every karate certificate
Would you please post any of your black belt tests
I wouldn't consider my dojo a McDojo, but any student was allowed to test whenever they felt like they were ready. The results were always varied. I'd love to know your opinion about this style of testing if you wouldn't mind. Edit: Also, how many years would you say it takes the average adult student to reach their black belt?
hello, from Peru. very interesting your videos.
Wow. 98 Kids!?! How do you keep them focused and disciplined during training? Asking as I am sometimes overwhelemed by our 30 Kids.
In the dojo I'm training there are also junior blackbelts. But the stripe in the middle of the belt has a other colour. The youngest kids have a white stripe. The next is the yellow, then blue and at least the red stripe. It's a bit different but it's the same idea...👍
Impressive turn out.
Hi sensei great video our grading is every 3-5 months
i had a taekwondo zoom grading it was nice and i passed!
Short question :
How likely is it to NOT get your new belt?
You got some good students
“In Japanese of course”.
Love your dojos values btw!
Thanks! 😃
This is excellent! Do you mind sharing what your rank progression system is for youth?
Get my letter for 2nd degree yesterday. .... I can already feel the pain
grog thekid Good luck!’
Great video! Your kids all look great they should be proud! You can tell they put in a lot of work! I like the idea of only two times per year for belt tests but I saw some kids have stripes on belts. Are those earned at separate exams or only twice per year also?
+Melissa La Cour Stripes are regular ranks
In my dojo it takes about 6 to 8 months to get a yellow belt, then after that, every other belt takes 10 to 11 if you’re very good, usually a year. Sometime even longer.
Granted my Sensei only awards 7 belts
Hello Jesse! You have a new fan!! =D I'm from Brazil and I practice Shotokan since I was 7 yrs old. I know our styles are different but I really liked the way you teach and explain everything, your philosophy and ethics about the Karate-do are awesome.
I totally agree with your complaint about the MC-Dojos (here in Brazil we have a lot of them too =s). Ah! you speeches very well too (english, I can understand 100%).
I'll keep following your channel.
Best wishes for you, family and the Dojo.
Muito obrigado!
it's nice to see how other dojos examinate their students. thx for the experience jesse :) osu !!
First! Wow good video Jesse! Love your week. Keep growing aswell 😂
+Jeremy Gray So fast! Thanks Jeremy-san, right back atcha! 👊
I would have assumed your entire closet would just be Gi's....how do you not have one ready!? Hahahaha
I know, it’s weird 😜
What kind of style are you practicing im practicing wado ryu
Do you know tiger Karate from Oslo in norway, or schogun håkon fredriksen?
At my dojo, a black belt with a white stripe in the middle is the sensei's belt.
i knew i heard swedish !! a question, od u speak swedish? cause i do! and i got into karate 3 weeks ago. i have a white belt rn :)
Just a question do u teach goju ryu style
Ja.. Ja.. Ja... 😃👍very good !!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!
Um guys do they spare and also what belt you need to unlock sparring but are country name philippines you can unlock sparring if you unlock yellow belt
Every month......man there is a DOJO near me where grading happens in every week..
So cool
Im the dojo i train at people under 18 can sometimes earn a full black belt but they must have trained for more than 7 years, showed commitment and wrote abowt what they want to do with karate in the futer i checked you list and i could only find 2 sines of it bieng a mcdojo
What are your thoughts on this
I know the discussion of junior-black belts or even blue/brown belts for very talented kids from our dojo. I have a question about Your junior black belt: What happens when these kids grow older? Is their next belt a 'normal' black belt or did they continue with a different color belt?
They test again. Colored belts. Most often green or blue adult belt.
