Welcome to another episode of "Every Disused Station" - (Episode 17) where we travel around the UK in search of Britain's lost railways, lost tunnels, and lost architecture. If you are enjoying the videos and would like to contribute towards their cost and production please consider Patreon: / everydisusedstation
In this Episode we find ourselves in search of some abandoned stations on the Midhurst lines between Petersfield and Chichester.
    Notes as always:
    1) Forgive the sun. ND filters now back in action for future productions.
    2) When we started this video we had this amazing idea to make the whole thing silent, and a little cinematic. It wasn't working out how I intended so changed it back, hence the random long intro! Sorry.
    3) Huge thanks as always to the extremely useful resource that is: www.railmaponline.com/
    4) Forgive the shocking post edit effort to blur a number plate. I will do it during the edit next time!
    Track Listing:

    Ten Towers - Geronimo

So back in the 80's i was a sailor & non driver, trains were my vehicle of choice. I lived in N. Hampshire needing to get to Pompey. I would catch very early 'milk run' trains from Waterloo, you never knew where you were going only the last stop. I travelled many weird routes and, loved the views down south. Plenty of stations were still up & running back then.

I remember the stone trains going to Lavant . I could hear the Class 73s on full power from my uncles house in Fishbourne not far from where the line to Midhurst branched off. He said that Cocking Tunnel was Usedom for growing mushrooms , and that Singleton station once had a lot of traffic for Goodwood Racecourse

I'm a bit late seeing and commenting on this one. I know the area well, many trips out exploring the South Downs, pub lunches etc, beautiful part of the world. My parents are now in the South Downs Natural Burial Ground and I plan to end up there eventually looking out over the Solent to Isle of Wight.
One memory of Petersfield level crossing is when an old lady driving in front of me turned off the road and onto the railway track - pandemonium ensued.

But when he got to the bridge going over the railway there would be nothing there.
Yes it could be just a tale but he told my grandad and my grandad went with him one morning after my dad going on about the strange fire and even my grandad witnessed the fire on the railway from the distance and when they both got to the bridge there was no fire.

Thanks for coming to the LBSC country! BTW it's LAVANT - a plea - why do you keep going into B&W? it destroys continuity. Glad to see you have a 'Drone'. I always enjoy your Investigations! As a Life Member of the Bluebell Railway, living near LEWES I am looking forward to the results of you both coming to my area! I am a very strong supporter of re-opening the Lewes - Uckfield line - through Isfield and Barcombe Mills. The old track bed is 'protected' from development from the original Jct. with the main line just South of Cooksbridge Station and North of Lewes Railway Tunnel. The new Uckfield By-Pass will have a new bridge to go over the re-instated line - they have planned this already. Bluebell Railway have already re-opened the line North of Horsted Keynes Station, through the West Hoathly Tunnel (very wet), through West Hoathly Station where the Station buildings have gone, leaving only the platforms (there are 'plans'), through Kingscote Station, over Imberhorn Viaduct (magnificent) and into a new East Grinstead Station. There are also plans to re-open the line from Horsted Keynes through Ardingly Tunnel. Ardingly Station (currently used as an 'Office' by an Amey Roadstone plant (now Hanson Aggregates) established in the Ardingly goods yard shortly after closure of the line, and was served by a daily freight working from Haywards Heath, (the track is still there) using the former down local line via Copyhold Jct.. Bluebell owns the trackbed from Ardingly to Horsted Keynes, but a bridge will have to be constructed since the viaduct between Horsted Keynes Jct. and the Tunnel was demolished. Bluebell already have a railway bridge ready for this. Then there's the Mayfield Branch - now closed and abandoned, and the Three Bridges through Rowfand, Grange Road to East Grinstead High Station (demolished) to Forest Row, Hartfield to Eridge (working Station). There's also the Southern portion of the Lewes East Grinstead Railway or L.E.G.R. through Newick (Statio demolished) through a small Tunnel and on to Barcombe Station (privately owned) on to the Jct with the Lewes - Uckfield Railway. Rich pickings for your combined investigative talents!

Interestingly in regrouping days it was impossible for trains to run directly to and from the LBSCR to LSWR that was because the bridge in Midhurst was so feeble it would only take one wagon at a time! It was not until the Grouping that a new bridge was built to allow through traffic.
However it was never much use.
Dad said to me that if you wanted to go to Petersfield from Brighton you certainly didn't go via Midhurst!
Dad being perverse did and it took him nearly twice as long as it did via Havant! As for Cocking there was a large limeworks there which from memory closed around 30 years ago. Also Midhurst Whites brick company had a narrow gauge system on and around the LSWR line west of Midhurst.
One point worth noting was that when the line was originally built from Horsham the main line ran to Petworth. It was only after the so called "Mid Sussex" (A misnomer if there ever was) was built from Hardham to Arun Junction that the line to Petworth became a branch.
It was also proposed to build a link line to Steyning via Storrington and some land purchases were carried out, including the site of the planned Storrington Station but this line fell foul of the 1866 financial crisis and never happened. All in all very interesting. You should also look at "Oh Mr Porter's Railway" the Basingstoke & Alton Light Railway.

The Witham/Maldon line has one of those triple arch and girder bridges on it too. I confess to looking up at it, thinking ohh, cool, failed to get a photo I would share in public because I forgot to pick up my camera on the way out and my phone couldn't cope with the bright sunlight on the day. When you do that line please visit the trestle, it's a scheduled 1 monument and tbh some of it's timbers are in a bloody awful state so anything to shame the relevant people into doing something is good..

@@pwhitewick I guess I should explain, been to the tower several times and if you want reasonable coffee that you don't need to mortgage your liver for after traipsing round the over priced bit of history then there's an old victorian warehouse that's been repurposed slightly down the hill and to the right, there's a fish and chip shop and a tourist tatt shop on the outside but if you go in the small doorway between them it leads to a KFC where the coffee isn't bad and almost normally priced, I have had to do this several times with family and friends from overseas because they have to do the famous 3 before they go home, I have it organised now, put then on an open-topped hop on hop off double decker, that takes us round and stop at the tower, the ceilings I mentioned are in The seating area and allways impress the tourists as it makes it a quite unusual and atmospheric sit down and rest a while, I think its the last of the old warehouses that were built when tower bridge was being built and that makes them late 1800's putting them at the same time as all the railway expansion was going on, so could be a well known weight bearing style at the time which many architects would have known about and builders themselves knew how to construct, many old victorian buildings have gone to be hardcore in the 50's and 60's and of course in London the blitz making this arched brick vaulting a rarity now.

Have you come across any disused stations buried beneath a Motorway? I recently came across a disused branch line with at least 2 stations buried beneath a section of motorway, will reveal all very soon. Look forward to hearing your answer, best wishes Peter.

Hi Paul & Rebecca, thanks for your reply, I’m sure there must be quite a few disused lines like that. The one I came across via TH-cam is the Westerham (Kent) branch line that has 2 stations buried beneath the M25 between Junctions 5 & 6, according to the video it sounds like a group wanted to buy the line after its closure to use it as a heritage line, but were denied their application as it has already been approved for use in building the M25, such a shame really.

These LBSC Stations are very much set to a pattern with their curved plastered soffitts and plaster cast reliefs and with Jacobean-style exposed wood beams and subway connections between platforms - even stained glass windows. Amen. Horsted Keynes on the Bluebell Railway is a very good example. There the Subway interconnects all three platforms. Kingscote only has two platforms - but it does have a subway between them. When the Bluebell bought Kingscote Station the subway was crammed with junk! Sheffield Park does NOT have a subway - so they bought a dis-used passenger Bridge from Brit.Rail.LIngfield Station. Otherwise that is the only alterations to Sheffield Park Station. The Signalling cabin is still on the platform there.

The station buildings on the LBSCR line to Midhurst were designed by the same architect - T.E. Myers - who designed the station buildings on the LBSCR Eridge - Polegate line (closed) and on the LBSCR Lewes - East Grinstead line (now 2/3rds re-opened as the Bluebell Railway). On the latter line, Sheffield Park, Horsted Keynes and Kingscote stations have been fully restored, Sheffield Park in LBSCR livery, Horsted Keynes in Southern Railway livery and Kingscote in BR (Southern Region) livery (using canopy parts recovered from Lavant station). Ardingly station, on the LBSCR link line between Horsted Keynes and Haywards Heath, also retains its roadside main building (though all of the platform buildings, at track level and at right angles to the main building, have gone now), and it may return to railway use in the future when the Bluebell Railway re-opens the line from Horsted Keynes as its next extension project. Of the 3 other stations on the Lewes - East Grinstead line, only Barcombe - the last station before the line joined the Uckfield - Lewes line at Culver Junction - still survives, as a private house. Newick and Chailey, between Barcombe and Sheffield Park, was demolished many years ago and little trace remains. West Hoathly, between Horsted Keynes and Kingscote, was also demolished, although its crumbling platforms survive beside the track. Though denied planning permission to rebuild the station when they re-opened the line North from Horsted Keynes in the 1990's, the Bluebell Railway plans to rebuild a station there in the future, and includes this in their present Long Term Plan. In the meantime, the site can easily be seen, both from passing trains and from the footpath which crosses the platforms (offering a superb view of Bluebell steam trains climbing the steep 1 in 75 gradient out of the the 731-yard Sharpthorne Tunnel, the longest on a UK preserved railway).

@@pwhitewick The Ardingly line makes quite a good walk Paul, but you will need permission from the Bluebell Railway as they own the trackbed between Horsted Keynes and Ardingly. The distance is only 2 miles, but includes the 217-yard Lywood Tunnel which is the highlight of the route. The line is also a rare closure of a line which had been electrified by the Southern Railway, being operated by 3rd-rail EMU's until it closed. Just South of the demolished Newick and Chailey station is another disused tunnel, the short 61-yard Cinder Hill Tunnel, which may still be reachable on foot.

@@pwhitewick I forget to mention that there were three Bluebell Railway halts between Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes which are all now disused, having been abandoned within a few years of being opened in the early years of the line's preservation. Ketches Halt is still intact and can be seen from the train near Sheffield Park, but Holywell Halt and Bluebell Halt have both been removed. Holywell Halt was built to catch trade from a local bus route which passed beneath the line at that point, but traffic congestion soon led to it's closure. Bluebell Halt stood just below Horsted Keynes, and was the line's first terminus there until BR allowed them to operate into the station, which BR had refused to permit until they had stopped using the goods yard there. The site of Bluebell Halt is now marked by a sign beside the track. These would be interesting as unusual examples of stations opened and then closed during preservation.
