    Danny, I remember thinking that you wouldn't like Obsidian (or Roam, etc.) because when you were using Notion, you didn't seem like a writer or thinker in the way that you are now. You are a case study in how using the right tool/s can unleash your full potential. Keep it up, my friend!

    I was resistant at first, but now I'm all in and drinking the Koolaid. I've tried every organization / notes tool out there. I work in a high-paced tech field, manage a company, etc. I've always tended to slip back to using .txt note files. For some reason it's just the lowest barrier to entry for me to think clearly. But I think obsidian might actually be the one that plays towards this simplicity tendency while giving a ton of power for linking ideas, automation, etc. Amazing. So simple and beautiful.

    Hey Danny. Thank you so much for introducing me to Obsidian! Been using it for about a month now and honestly you can't drag me away from my computer any more! I'm just wondering how you import your Zotero annotations to Obsidian using a hotkey? I've been manually converting annotations to a note, then exporting that to a markdown file that I have saved in my Obsidian vault (I use the same one, and just overwrite it every time). Then I copy them to where I want them. Would be much quicker if I could just use a hotkey and import annotations to my current note directly.
    Even if you don't respond, I can't thank you enough for how much you've improved my productivity!

    • @DannyHatcherTech
      @DannyHatcherTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I respond to most my comments, just have a look on my videos 😉
      I use the community plugin "zotero integrations" once I have created an annotated note in zotero I can use the hotkey in obsidian to make a note, and import the notes in it with links back to the highlights formatted anyway I want with the template I make.
      I cover it in more detail in my course, but the recent zotero video covers it a bit as well. 😁
      You could of course ask in the Obsidian discord.

    Hi Danny. Thank you for this video. But i am still conflicted on which to use. Perhaps let me start with context;
    1. I need a tool to organise my academic exploits - so research ppapers i need, take notes from those and document for when i need to start writing
    2. i take a lot of short courses, and it would be great to organise notes around those too; thing coursera courses, udemy etc. Keeping track of all the course material, summarising all work etc is ideal for me (some are coding courses/data science/software engineering oriented) + scheduling and keeping track of progress on each
    3. i need a space to journal my life exploits
    4. I am skeptical about attaching my documents online with minimal control; how secure are material we upload to notion? can i not choose to have everything go to a different cloud?. eg i do have onedrive and ideally would just sync material there or alt google drive
    5. I travel a lot, so internet connectivity might be an issue. ideally, i can be able to work anytime anywhere on mac/windows. typing my thoughts on my android devices would be great on the go, alhtough i ideally just work these out on my laptop.
    6. i doodle some of my work ideas, so there's a need for a space for that
    lastly, there isnt a ranking to these requirements above despite the numbering, but if i were to say one i am unlikely to compromise on - it would be security; not keep to see pdf and images with identifiable info floating around the internet (i acknowledge the net in of itself isnt really safe for anything to be honest)
    with these in mind, what would you suggest for a great workflow?

    Really appreciate this Danny. I happened to start messing with Zotero recently, but ended up moving away from it and i'm curious if I just didn't know a work around. I find that when I'm reading articles/blogs I have the most time to do so quickly on my phone during the day, and then when I sit down to do more note taking I like having that already imported. However, the Zotero phone app I found it hard to read and highlight on opposed to an app like Matter. The issue there being that Matter does not import PDFs, but if I have a link to an article on the web it works nicely. However, with Matter I have to export each highlight individually into a daily note for Obsidian opposed to what you describe with Zotero having a 1 click to export all.
    That was a bit long winded, but do you know of any work arounds to either make the Zotero app a better reading/highlighting experience on an iPhone, similar to some of the reader apps like Matter, Instapaper or Pocket? I'd like to have a nice reading/highlighting experience, but the Zotero functionality of exporting in mass with auto tags/citations

    I am not sure if Obsidian is suitable for content creators? In Notion (but also Clickup or Monday) I can display the calendar and list of planned content wonderfully. Obsidian seems to me to be more suitable for research or as a wiki, where it's more about text and links?
    The complete planning would then have to be done with other tools (e.g. Todoist + Google Calendar)?

    2 things my man. I never cared about the outliner not because I didn't want to, but because the outline core plugin doesn't display bulleted headers. So it doesn't pick up the titles etc. I stuck to headers for now but headers also loses you one where you are in a note. If I'm typing a long paragraph I lose what header I'm typing under whereas with indenting and outlines Its very easy to scroll up and stop when the line ends.

      Hi, Nayef.
      I rarely use bullets in Obsidian. When I am writing I normally the page open multiple times so can easily find and navigate my say around without losing my place. I don't tend to indent when writing pages as an outline often loses context for me. They are more useful as summaries.

      I just started using Obsidian, on my mac and iPhone, synced by iCloud. In that experience I found Obsidian and iOS-iCloud didn't quite "have their act together", but after a slight fiddle-around this now works well for me. What worked for me was to set the iCloud-based vault for the iPhone Obsidian (app) first (because it was more "fussy"/"awkward". AFAIR I (somehow) first I created a "root" Obsidian folder in iCloud, named simply "Obsidian" (that name might matter). Then, on the iPhone-Obsidian app, I used "Create new vault" with its iCloud switch enabled, where I created a folder called "Obsidian iCloud Vault 001". The resulting folder for that vault then appeared under the "Obsidian" root-folder.
      It all works well except that when I add plugins via the mac or via the iPhone I think they (possibly) go to both levels of that folder structure (or maybe because I found the need to install them separately for - and from - both the mac and the iPhone). I need to do a tidier experiment in order to confirm/deny that (my "dive straight in" experiments to-date having been a bit messy!). I imagine Sync might be more straightforward and possibly reliable in the longer run (easier life?), but I'm starting off via cloud storage services I already have.

    • @DavidEsp1
      @DavidEsp1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Issue: In this (of your highly informative videos), your "pieces to camera" were skippy/jumpy on my iPhoneX just now. But the screen captures were smooth. One reason (at least) is likely the fact that you film at 24 fps for a target of 30 or even 60 fps. It's best if all are filmed, edited and rendered at a consistent fps such as 30 or 60 fps (like typical viewing devices and screen captures). Some film-makers like "the 24 fps look" but it only works if the whole chain up to and including the display are consistent with this. If not, then "the look" becomes "ragged motion".
      Reason: When a 30 fps (say) targeted project in an NLE (e.g. Resolve) or encoder/renderer is supplied with 24 fps media, the conversion is achieved crudely, by repeating or dropping frames as necessary to make the numbers match up. Smarter "optical flow" methods are available in most NLEs (including Resolve) but not used by default because they are far more cpu-heavy (because they have to interpolate the required frames by predicting pixel values and object movements) and can occasionally glitch. Best to stay at an integer multiple (or fraction if you must...).
      Demo: I noticed this effect in my own videos and demonstrated it for myself some time ago, with these test-shots:
      At 25 fps: vimeo.com/31930183
      At 30 fps: vimeo.com/31929495
      CTA: I hope that helps. Maybe upload some test shots of your own to get feedback here or in a stand-alone video?

    I don't care really for privacy of my notes and local storage. But I just know notion for me still hasn't made me feel like it's easy for me to learn the things I'm trying to learn. I tey obsidian last year and I couldn't get into it and finding things was still hard for me. I just want to be able to write down a certain topic that I have in my mind
    Example being vegan, and what I think about being vegan. And then be able to revisit said topic when I do research about being vegan from youtubers and books and research I've found. And then stop and revisit it again some how to link it all togther to be able to know if being vegan for me is morally right or not. But ever note app I've use seems hard to link all these ideas togther being written from different days or months apart. Idk how to properly be able to do it so I csn focus on writing and things are just where they need to be without much effort or trying to manage things or fit them in a label

      What you are discussing is exactly why I use Obsidian because the linking is so easy.
      I do it by creating a note for the source, and then a working note for the topic. I then link the source to the working for each point. My notes are public so you can look through them if you want.
      eg. video source note with 3 good points, blog source note with 2 good points, both link to vegan working note.
      point 1 [[video source]] [[blog source]]
      point 2 [[video source]] [[blog source]]
      point 3 [[video source]] [blog source]]
      I hope that helps. My new series will be diving deep into all my research. 😁

    I tried rearranging selected text - and that worked. Works on whole line if you select that whole line - whether bulleted or not. If bulleted then ensure you select not only the text but the bullet before it and any tab(s) before that. Does that imply Obsidian fixed this already? I'm on a Mac with Obsidian 0.15.9. Or is the request for a "six dot" (or whatever) block-handle like in Notion?

    • @DannyHatcherTech
      @DannyHatcherTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the request for something like Notion and the other drag drop tools.
      I personally use a hoteky to move blocks but that doesn't work across pages, and lots of beginners coming from apps like Notion as how to drag and drop blocks.

    Hello Danny, this might be a little weird to ask but I'll go anyway, I am in high school and after i found this "obsidian genre" on TH-cam, I only found people talking who are in universities and who are doing researches which is somehow leading me to think Obsidian is for complex people. So, can I still use it for my high school or notion will do good for me as high school seems easy 'cause I am from commerce background and it doesn't need so much notes rather just practice and practical. (Also I learnt vim for obsidian and all the shortcuts, cause I feel great when I don't have to touch my mouse).

      Great question.
      Obsidian can be used by anyone!
      It is used more by university students at the moment I think because at the start the app looked very code heavy scaring others away.

      Yes it works between different users. You can add people to a vault making it a collaborative vault. I think I screen share my example. As you say there is a second or so delay but it is good enough for me and I think most peoples use cases.
